I only gave it four stars because I have not read similar books for comparison. Otherwise, it probably deserves five stars for fulfilling its purpose. It's format is the same as any "for dummies" book. Don't expect glossy pages or color pictures. It does have practical and informative diagrams and black & white photos. Having played soccer on and off for years, this solidified things I already know, and expanded my knowledge and understanding in other areas. Great introduction to the game, the world of soccer, and leads to further resources. No glaring deficiencies. Pleasant, candid, and engaging style.
Working in pro soccer while knowing very little of either the sport itself or the business behind it. This helped a lot.
Recently picked up a passion for the sport and wanted to learn a little bit more about the game so decided to give this book a shot. I was pleasently suprised to see everything clearely explained with detail as well as history snippets across the board. I've been watching soccer for about a year and a half now, mostly MLS and USA National Team. The international side of soccer can be a little overwhelming, with so many countries and so many leagues with an enormous amount of history to absorb. This book does a great job of giving a high-level overview of national team history and league history outside of the USA (and provides info for USA history as well, although I am much more familiar with that). I am less interested in learning about the fundamentals of the game, although I must admit I learned quite a bit about that from this book, and it is surely necessary to fully appreciate watching soccer.The book is extremely well written, very professional, and is entertaining without trying too hard to be funny. It accomplishes everything it intends to do, serving as an excellent jumping off point for those who either want to learn more about watching soccer or playing it.

The book was great for beginners to watching soccer. It gave a good introduction to the history of the sport. It was simple to follow as it explained the basic rules, positions, and how the game is played.
I bought this almost when the World Cup was over but I will be ready for the next one because there is a lot I don't understand about Soccer but I will. The little I have read has helped me so when I am finished reading this I should be an expert.
