From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—In this physically hefty volume, Bennett captivates readers with an engaging look at the inside and outside workings of the human body. Rich with medical terminology, the writing style smoothly blends definitions of unfamiliar vocabulary with factual details. Technical passages are enhanced by clear diagrams. Large doses of humor lighten the tone, and gross-out descriptions, such as "snot rocket," should keep students reading. Bennett has a knack for breaking down complex medical information into understandable material. Nine sections delve into topics such as body systems, senses, puberty, and human development. Also covered are ways to stay well and some common illnesses, with suggestions on how to get better. Heaps of supplemental material, which appears in sidebars, further expands the content. A thorough index aides in quick retrieval of information—but since there is no separate glossary, readers will need to flip back to previous pages to reacquaint themselves with terms. Colorful photos (a mix of original and stock) and illustrations are plentiful. At times, the cartoonish art style, especially those on chapter-heading pages, seem geared more towards a younger audience when compared to the level of the text. VERDICT A fresh perspective on health and wellness and a useful resource or browsing selection for nonfiction collections.—Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron

Review
"Anatomy and physiology books for older grade schoolers are not especially rare, but it's worth taking a close look at this new one. This effort, on first glance, ever so closely resembles a textbook, which may serve to drive off potential readers and might especially daunt those interested in just browsing. Although it appears quite long, it is composed of heavyweight pages and has numerous spreads that are nearly devoid of text. It is remarkably comprehensive, not even glossing over reproduction and the reproductive system as many nonfiction works for the elementary-age group tend to do. Each chapter includes numerous clear, attractive photographs of people of all races, clear descriptions of the forms and functions of organs and systems, and sidebars entitled "What the Heck" that briefly describe surprising aspects of the various topics. Other sidebars called "Try This" offer very simple science experiments. "Ewww It's True" boxes offer just enough somewhat-disgusting trivia to amuse the intended audience. Finally, there are also "Fact or Fib" sidebars that present short, amusing true-or-false statements with explanations. Challenging words are followed by pronunciation guides usefully embedded in the text. Well-organized and systematic in its approach, this is an especially desirable work. A thorough, accurate, and attractive effort that's useful for quick reference as well as for a deeper examination of the topic."—Kirkus Reviews"Captivates readers with an engaging look at the inside and outside workings of the human body. What is different about this book is that it uses humor and what children enjoy – gross tales – to explain bodily functions in a way that kids will find engaging. There are interesting sections such as fun facts which give quirky tidbits... The author also gives pointers on tips for the next check-up, getting shots and so on. There are also diagrams, go-to guides, and DIY projects for children to do."—Parentcircle.com “Jam-packed with gross stories, cool diagrams, and fun facts, this book also includes do-it-yourself projects that demonstrate different body functions."--Learning Magazine "Uses humor, bright illustrations and fun stories about animals to get kids interested in everything from why their earspop to the purpose of saliva.”--Bethesda Magazine

As other reviewers have noted, The Fantastic Body is filled with lots of fun and accessible information about how the human body works. It also includes information about things people would like to know and it does so in easy to digest bites. For example, which scientist invented vaccinations? What causes lactose intolerance? Why do you shiver and feel cold when you have a fever? The book also includes a section called Dr. B’s Tips, which gives brief discussions about common problems kids may want to know about such as strep throat, ear infections, concussions and others. All in all, this is a fabulous resource for the whole family. I definitely will use it in my child and adolescent psychology practice and with my grandchildren.
This book does an incredible job of catching the attention of a 2 year old with lots of anatomically accurate illustrations which a parent may talk about in terms younger audiences can follow. The book is also loaded with text that older kids can read and or be read too. This pediatric RN approves and believes that offering higher level reading to young minds is the best way to engage them.In addition, the descriptions will keep non medically trained adults fascinated too.
My son loves this book. We purchased the kindle version. My son just turned 5 years old and loves looking at the pictures and we will read it together. HOWEVER, there is a somewhat detailed description of the reproductive systems for both genders that I was not prepared to explain yet to my 5 year old at this time. I should have looked through the whole book before letting him look at it to decide how to explain it the way my husband and I would like to first. Our fault though sill a fun and educational book for school aged children.
I feel like every kid should have this book. Simple yet thorough explanations with lots of humor and colorful diagrams and drawings. I feel certain most adults will also learn a thing or two from this book. I wish I'd had this when my children were young..it would have saved me from lots of embarrassing and ignorant moments.
Really cool book. Our 8-year-old grandson loved it and actually spent more time reading it than playing video games while he was visiting for Christmas.
Love the book and most importantly my 5 and 7 year old loved it as well. The illustration is amazing!! I like how it has both reality and animated pics. Great buy ðŸ‘ðŸ»
We love the book! We got it to our kids (who are Dr Bennett’ s patients) for them to read and enjoy when they grow older. It really reflects Dr. Bennett’s expertise, spirit and personality!
Bought this book for my grandchildren. Read some of it. Bought one for myself. Learned a lot. And thoroughly enjoyed the gross stuff.
