I have seen the photographs of Jacob Riis in the real and was very disappointed to see them so poorly reproduced in this book. Documenting impoverished NYC in the late 19th century what Riis is most known for and his photographs were an important part of that work.It's possible I didn't do my homework here but it is a good reminder of one of the shortcomings of buying books online. Had I picked this up in a bookstore and seen how poorly the photography was represented, I would not have bought it. I'm interested in the story but the photographs tell so much of it and are in every way as important as the words.

This a Very, Very, cheaply copied, version, stolen from the original book. The clowns who "copied, and pasted" paragraphs from the original, couldn't even bother to do it correctly. Typos are rampant. A four year old could've done a better job. The pictures are smudged, and blurry. They obviously were out to make a quick buck. And they even had the nerve to print when they made it ( when you order it, they print it, off of their copy machine).Word to the wise... DO NOT BUY A BOOK FROM THIS PUBLISHER.

Ok, if you read the whole description of this edition, you will see at the very bottom that this is a special reprint of a specific edition that didn’t include any of the photos... but I sought out this book because it was called an important piece of photojournalism...Half of the point of the original book was the photos, so I had not expected that there was going to be an edition that removed the photos. The text is still important, but repeoducing a collection of photos without the photos is cheap.

Riis had intimate knowledge of the slums of New York having lived there briefly after his arrival from his native Denmark. He experienced a gradual worsening of his circumstances, hunger, theft and rejection. After finding employment as a newspaper reporter, Riis experimented with photography and he was able to document the overcrowding of tenements, the dismal conditions of many dwellings, shiftless drunkards, decrepit alleys and groups of newspaper boys (shoeless!). Meticulously documented conditions, census figures, and income of his subjects reveal a horrendous picture of "the other half" of New York. Separated into chapters devoted to the living quarters of the various immigrant groups (Irish, Jewish, Italian, Chinese etc.), he cannot escape some stereotypes - the money grubbing Jew, the dirty Irish, the "almost" clean Germans - as evidenced in the respective tenement blocks. From overcrowding, starvation wages, dismal hygienic environment - no water in the summer, smallpox, tuberculosis, measles, typhoid, cholera, on to little schooling, malevolent landlords. Then, finally, there might be a way out ... Riis writes about some semi-enlightened landlords, who make a good return on their investment while providing decent living conditions. Yet, the immigrants keep coming, the slums are always there, An enlightening book. Thanks to the photographs the horrendous conditions are made clear. The Kindle edition was a scanned version of Riis' 1890 study complete with photographs and appendices.

Wonderful book, I got it since my great g-parents, grandparents and parents came from the Victorian to 1935 era of in Manhattan. They left Ireland to make their fortune here. I was aware of some of the poverty and conditions, but this book really shows how awful and harsh the immigrants had things and especially their children living sometimes on the streets. They suffered much, and people have no idea except for eyewitness accounts of the appalling conditions of shelters, work houses, suicides, alcoholism that they fell into after leaving their poor home countries for a better life in America. This is a classic by Jacob Riis and a window into a world unknown to most people. He attempted to alleviate the bad living conditions of poor people by exposing their living conditions to the middle and upper classes. Think things are bad now?, You should see how bad, "bas is", as you travel with the writer into ghettos and alleyways of working people toiling to just eke out an existence at long hours, often working at home making clothes and other goods to sell.

This edition is full of typos, many of which render entire sentences illogical. The whole thing is awkwardly formatted, as if the editor had no concept that the information was going to appear on the page of a book. There is no table of contents. "Special illustrated edition" is a complete lie -- the images are uselessly reproduced. Many of the images are so illegible that the typed captions within the image had to be reproduced outside the image. Not a single image in the book is adequate or useful -- I went online for worthwhile reproductions. I was truly disappointed with this edition which is in no way fit to be published. The publisher, "Seven Treasures Publications" does not seem to have a website, and offers only a fax number and an email address, nor is an editor named. This is clearly not a serious nor reputable publication company -- anyone who has bought this book, including me, was duped.

The photos from this dark time in the most poor section of a bustling immigrant city were very stark and startling. The author writes the narrative very well, and it is as if he has studied these people for themselves, by being among them. His expose was very instrumental in getting changes effected for the benefit of these poor people. When we look at these, we are reminded of the hardships that were endured by our forefathers and mothers, who came to America, willing to risk everything for the opportunity presented here. It should increase our respect for them tremendously, to understand, in stark black and white evidence, of how they were forced to live.

I have a new baby so I've purchased every sleep training book since I'm sleep deprived. I bought this book based on it's outstanding reviews.I read the book, it has some obvious suggestions. Basically, keep the room dark and use a sound machine. There are no scientific studies mentioned anywhere in the book which was something I was hoping to see. This book was not helpful. I found another book called Baby Wise. I recommend that one. It's very informative and many pediatrician's helped write it.I believe this books' positive reviews are phony-bologna. Waste of money.

I purchased this book, when I had problem with my 9month old baby's napping. I tries her method and it worked for us. The baby has a schedule, naps well, and goes to sleep on her own. After the 3rd day of implementing, she went to sleep in 2min. I would recommend it anyone who has problems with nursing baby to sleep or the baby don't nap well.

I should start by saying I have 3 kids (youngest is 7 months) and I hired Violet as a sleep consultant a few years ago for my son. I was desperate for sleep and waking every two hours for my 9 month old. Hiring violet was the best decision ever! Three nights in and he was sleeping 12 hours at night. I used her methods for my second child as well. I bought this book for my third. It's amazing! She gives great instructions and its exactly how she trained me when I hired her. My favorite thing is that she always reverts back to your gut as the parent. She knows what shes talking about, but she isn't telling you what to do. It's a step by step guide. Follow it, and your child will be trained in a week. I highly recommend for all those exhausted parents out there!

There is so much literature out there on sleep training. What do you pick? Of course something that is easy to read and can be done in a day to start practicing, especially if you get desperate! I read babywise but this book summarizes Bw in 5 mins. Havent started training yet but I know it will work

Short and sweet

Was very useful with my toddler

With my first child I was totally clueless! We co-slept and I mistakenly nursed him or bottle-fed him to sleep every night until he was almost two years old. Unfortunately, I was so afraid of letting him go to sleep on his own that he never learned how. He is now almost six years old and he still has trouble going to sleep on his own. There are nights I even find him in our bed! When our second child was born, I was resolved to make a change. In comes Violet and her sleep training methods! Violet not only helped us understand how to help our daughter develop consistent sleeping habits, but she gave us the confidence to keep trying and move past our guilt over allowing our daughter the space to figure it out on her own. I was so excited to see that Violet's book was recently released. It does not disappoint. Written in Violet's patient, personable, and accessible style, it is a must-have for all new sleep-deprived parents. The text is written is such as way as to make you feel like a friend is guiding you through one of the most stressful aspects of parenting and the graphics are relatable. I highly recommend this book and will be adding it to my list of baby shower gifts!

This book shares a wealth of wonderful and useful techniques to manage stress and keep it under control. There is something for everyone--with numerous ideas, worksheets, checklists, and goal planning pages to find meaning, reconnect, and relax.According to the author, it takes 8+ weeks to form a new habit and change the things that cause each of us stress in different ways. What I like about her approach is that she gives readers the tools to get started on forming new habits little by little. This is the best book that I have seen to really "learn your limits" and then do something about it. It is helpful to understand what triggers give stress, write down goals to manage stress, discover what specific things you need to do, avoid triggers, and create a less stressful environment. While this all sounds easy, clearly there is a lot of work needed on a daily basis to make this a reality.Part One of the book is the "heart" of this book and shares more than a dozen stress situations with more than 50 suggested exercises to choose that are right for you--from "Achieve Calm" and "Burn Nervous Energy" to "Feel Productive" and "Prepare for a Stressful Event." Part Two of the book shares specifics on how to implement each of the many exercises.There are many takeaways from this book including practice gratitude, have a handy list of quotes, mantras, and affirmations ready to practice, and serve others. But best of all, there are simple exercises to practice on a daily basis.(I received an advance electronic galley of this book and liked it so much that I purchased the Kindle version.)

I'm going to, basically, agree with the other reviewer. This is a fabulous self-help book to relieving stress.I should state that I am employed in Health & Safety. Although I am certified by the National Safety Council as a First Aid/CPR AED Instructor, I am not a medical professional. In my profession, I have learned that one of the greatest impacts on people in their jobs is stress. Perhaps surprising to some, too little stress also leads to accidents. Of course, though, too much stress is a leading cause of accidents in the workplace.My point is, I've been searching for the right, inexpensive book, that can be used to explain the causes and solutions for stress. "The Stress Management Workbook" is the first offering I've seen that fits all my criteria. I'm so pleased with it that I'm going to work on my employer to buy copies for work. Further, I intend to discuss it with our workmen's comp insurance provider about making it available to either all employers or to employees who get injured on the job. It's a great investment.Having extolled the virtues of this book, though, I do want to note one issue I had with it.At location 701, their is a spreadsheet depicting exercises to achieve a calm state. (One cell indicates the exercise, while the cell to the right has a hot button, linking the user to a page in which the exercise instructions are provided). Clicking on the cell for self-massage takes the reader to a page detailing how to do a shoulder massage. Here is the fly in the ointment, unless I am a freak of nature:'...1.Set your timer, bend your arms, and place your left open palm on your left shoulder and your right open palm on your right shoulder, with your fingers facing your back.2.Using four fingers (not your thumbs) on each hand, massage the spot where your neck meets your shoulder.3.Continue your massage for one minute. You can also use your right hand to massage your left shoulder and upper arm. Switch arms and repeat on the other side, again for one minute...'White PhD MPH MSW, Ruth C. Kindle Edition.When I try to place my open left palm on my left shoulder, well, it aint gonna happen. I have not the flexibility. Again, perhaps its just me, but I believe the writer may have made an error here. Not a serious error, because I am confident most readers will do as I did and use their right open palm to massage their left shoulder, while using their left open palm to massage their right shoulder. Doing it this way is quite helpful.BOTTOM LINEDespite the one minor flaw, I loved this book. The layout and easy navigation using the spreadsheet tables is outstanding. Looking for various exercises and activities for STRESS training class! This book is perfect ! So many great ideas with various LENGTH of activities ... 1 minute, 5 minute, 15 minute ... through 1 hour. VERY helpful because if one activity doesn't particularly "work" for a person ... there are many others to select from. Great resource !

This book was very helpful in teaching a class on stress. Gave practical exercises for stress management.

This is one of the most comprehensive, easy-to-understand, and organized books on stress management I've come across in a while. The "workbook" aspect of it is one of its best qualities as it helps readers pinpoint exactly how stress is impacting their lives and what to do about it. Part I explains what stress is, the impact it has generally on body, emotions, mind and spirit and guides readers through self-assessment activities that enable them to choose the stress management exercises in Part II that will best serve in reducing and eliminating stress.I especially like the fact that these exercises and activities are divided into one-, five-, and 10-minute segments which means you can be doing something to manage stress just about every waking our of the day and can tailor them to take advantage of where you are and what you're comfortably able to do. The activities are also grouped in terms of the stress management goal you want to achieve (e.g. achieving calm, stopping headaches, releasing muscle tension, getting better sleep). So you can simply go to the chart that applies to your specific situation and make your selection from the choices provided.I'm pretty sure that if readers commit to following the guidance provided in this book and give themselves the time needed to see results (Dr. White says it takes 66 days to change a habit), they'll be able to successfully manage the stress-inducing situations that we all face in our daily lives. I'll definitely be using it to get a better handle on the stress in my life.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book.
