The questions Amazon asks aren't really applicable to the book, but this is a great book on ethics. I originally picked it up for a philosophy class and have since sent copies to three friends. It's like a handbook for living.It's a philosophical book, so don't expect to blow through it.

As a philosophy undergrad I can never have enough books, especially Aristotle works. This book has been through the ringer this semester and has become my bible! Never without it, NEVER!!

Overall the translation is accurate and much easier to read than other translations. If i could make a change to the book i would:(1) add Stephanus numbers (a line numbering system) and Chapter numbers; and(2) make the font larger. The font in this text seems to be in font size 9. I would increase it to size 11.

Some people may argue Aristotle is circular in his definition of ethics what not, but I did not find this to be true. Instead, his writing is very clear and simple to read. It's just that, at times, it can be quite dense. Thankfully, Terence Irwin wrote lots of notes to help readers understand what Aristotle may have meant based on his (Irwin's) perspectives. Overall, this was a fantastic read.

Excellent book, the translation is good, the notes are very revealing.Maybe some other books would offer more commentary to understand the topic, the ideas, and how to apply it or compare it in modern times.In this book the comments seem more onto making the text clearer, along with the ideas of the author in relation to the context of the book.Still, I like a lot this book, also its size, is almost a pocket edition, very handy.

This book is a rip off. It doesn't even have chapter X, the last section of the book. Stay clear of this edition. Buyer beware!The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle

Terence Irwin’s translation is enjoyable to read. In some places he fills in sentences to make the meaning clear. Also, in the Kindle edition it is easy to jump to footnotes for more information.Aristotle’s clear thinking and precise vocabulary are brilliant. He and his community were living virtuous, fulfilling lives thousands of years ago, and I find his insights useful today.

Nice to search for your terms and theories electronically! It means you can't resell the book but saves so much time when doing research and reading it is definitely worth it! If possible I by all electronic books now! The book is necessary for most ethics classes and have a wealth of knowledge and things to think about, I haven't taken a recent ethics class but still reference it here and there personally when doing research and thinking about things! I bought both hard copy and electronic. I sold the hard copy but wouldn't have if not for the electronic copy!

Burnham's "The Machiavellians" is really one of those little books that punches well above it's weight. It summarises some broad themes in political philosophy and history and provides a thoughtful synthesis. It is both a 'reference book' of sorts and a narrative.Some comments have been raised that maybe Burnham downplayed his intellectual debt to the Polish leftist Jan Waclaw Machajski and the American 'fascist' Lawrence Dennis. Both made thoroughly 'machiavellian' critics of communist and other movements of the early 20th century, before Burnham, and Burnham would have been familiar with their work. This debate may seem a little arcane but it does reflect the intellectual forment of 1930s America.Burnham sees his collection of "machiavellian thinkers" as forerunners of his own "managerial revolution" ideas. Before his later decades as one of the editorial team of William F Buckley's "National Review", James Burnham, was at one time America's leading Trotskyite theoretician. He even rushed to Trotsky's death bed in Mexico following the Soviets' assasination of their former military leader.Burnham de-marxified (or more exactly de-marxist-leninist-ised) the Trotskyite critique of the Stalinist Soviet Union and broadened it into a genuine revision and amendment of marxism. In Burnham's analysis, the bourgeoisie would be replaced, not by the proletariat, but by the Managerial class of managers, bureaucrats, experts etc. Penned in the late 1930s, Burnham saw this class as already having come to power in Germany, (Soviet) Russia and (New Deal) America.Burnham's "Managerial Revolution" in it's day was probably considered his most important, much debated and influential book. Today it's thesis has been so thoroughly absorbed that his analysis, once seen as radical and non-conformist, is now seen as such a commonplace and mundane observation that "everyone knows it". But the obvious was not always obvious. "Managerial Revolution" is thus delegated today to gather dust. "The Machiavellians" in contrast is perhaps a timeless book and, who knows, may ultimatelty be considered Burnham's genuine classic."The Machiavellians" is not just a readable survey and synopsis of the ideas of several great political philosophers, it also describes the lessons Burnham believed needed to be assimilated if liberty and human dignity are to survive in an era of great central power.

It is scandalous that this book should be out of print, for it is without a doubt the best primer on political science ever written. If you are going to read only one book on politics, this should be it. Burnham is no ideologue with an axe to grind. He merely seeks to describe how politics works in the real world of fact. In pursuit of this aim, he discusses five of the most scientifically rigorous of all political thinkers: Machiavelli, Vilfredo Pareto, Gaetano Mosca, Robert Michels, and Georges Sorel. Together, these thinkers represent, according to Burnham, the Machiavellian tradition in political thought. Machiavellians, Burnham tells us, regard politics as a science devoted to describing facts as they really are, not as one may wish them to be.In a certain sense, I can understand why this book is out of print. Realism in politics is hardly popular. What most people seek for in political theory is not reality but a rationalization for their own wishful thinking.

What they have in common is an objective, scientific approach to politics that avoids allowing wishful thinking, or ideas about what ought to be, to impede their discernment of what is.I disagreed with Burnham's tendency to dismiss religious ideas as inherently irrationalist. Also, his clarification in response to Machiavelli's reputation ignores the fact that Machiavelli did, after all, offer some amoral advice, not just non-moral analysis. Booklet is - packed - with good information, which also means small print, so keep your reading glasses handy. CD references the booklet as you go through. It runs a tad fast, so keep your speed reading glasses handy too. Native speaker uses a Castilian-o pronunciation instead of a Latin American dialect: Chiu-DATH instead of the more familiar Shoe-DAD. They should have hired a translator from Sevilla instead of Madrid to get a better match. Still, it's worth paying the extra buck for the booklet/cd, especially if you have to ask for a light bulb in three different parts of South America. Yes, it's that thorough.

This is the handiest little book! It's small enough to pop into my bag and take with to the grocery store and restaurant and around town. The small size makes it easy to navigate too - look up something quick enough to answer a waiter or clerk. Just enough info to get us through little everyday situations. We used it constantly on our recent trip to Dominican Republic. Excellent value.

I've just started this book (had it for awhile) as it's looking more and more likely I need to learn Latin American Spanish. The CD is a big help cuz you get to hear words pronounced correctly, some of them I'd never have guessed.The thing I like the most about it is that it's well organized, it's clear and concise. It's a daunting task to learn a new language, one really needs a book to be organized like this one so that it doesn't take forever to get there.There are 2 options for ordering this book, one is for 'The Book', the other is for 'The CD'. In my case, I ordered the CD and got both the book and the CD. There's a couple of people whining in these reviews they didn't get the CD. Maybe that's because all you ordered was the book?I admit it's confusing, but I ordered the CD and the book came also. It probably should say 'Book' or 'Book and CD'.

The audio CD that accompanies the book is very helpful and concise. I just completed a couple weeks in Nicaragua where the phrases contained in the book and on the CD were immensely helpful. The book is also sufficiently compact to carry around with you if necessary. My only gripe is the lack of color in the book, or any other quick-finding aids, for quickly locating needed phrases. Thus, I was forced to tab mine with little post-it notes. All in all, a great phrase book.

This is a great pocket guide. I got the German one years ago and came back for the Spanish. Good primer containing most of the basic language needed for a vacation. The included audio CD helped with pronnunciation.

I really enjoyed this book as it gives sentence structure in order to communicate more clearly. It is divided by categories that a traveler would need to use, such as Hotels, Foods, etc. I highly suggest this book.

I had this dictionnary in my pocket or my backpack for my whole trip in Bolivia - was very useful all the time! Very handy, too.

I would have liked more phrases in this Latin-American Spanish Book; although parts of it were very useful on my trip to the Caribbean.

This might be how the author made $100,000 a year but it's not practical advice for others. I read this entire book in under a couple hours. All the way through I kept thinking, "is this it," it has to get better than this. Her "how to's" include such things as don't wear scrubs and sneakers and dress high class to get high class customers. She even gives a website to order clothes from. I laughed when I went there and saw the prices. No way am I going to do massage in clothing that costs more than what I am making an hour doing massage. The book is basically about getting rich working "for the stars, VIP clients," and big name hotels. She brags of month long vacations, being flown to NY by a well known model at a fee of $1500.00 with a $600.00 tip. Good for her. What I wanted was some useful marketing tips that would work for those of us who are looking to build a practice in our hometown and make a decent living. I and most other therapists I know have no desire to massage big name celebrities. Sorry, didn't find anything useful in this book, complete waste of time.

A lot of the information that Meagan provides is good business sense. You have to do a lot up front to reap the rewards later. Setting yourself a part in the beginning will go a long way for you. I have read several of the chapters and on my way to finishing the book. Her focus on "dressing for the clients you want" does not bother me like some. I have worked in corporate America for years and dressing for the job you want, not the one you have, is a thing that a lot of people do. A lot of this stuff is about presentation and marketing yourself.

This is a well written book and has some really good ideas. I think it is more for females therapists than males, but still has good information for someone wanting to start their own massage business. I would say it is a must read for anyone just starting out, as it will keep you from getting into situations that would not be in your businesses best interest. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 mostly because I felt like the information was better suited to larger cities than I work in. The sections on startups, ethics, dress, and attitude will help you go in the right direction.

This is an easy read (plowed thru in 24 hours), is well-written, and has information on a lot of relevant subjects. A great book if you want to find out what it's like to work in a hotel, spa, or for celebrities without actually doing it first. Also gives good info on insurance billing. Best info, I think, is the section that describes what your clients are expecting from you and your business materials and practices.Problem is that she mentions links for products throughout the book and says they'll be listed on her website, [...], but they're not. No links, just further selling of her book... rather disappointing, considering I was really excited about this book. She even repeats the adage of under-promising and over-delivering, but doesn't follow it herself, stripping some of her own authority...UPDATE: It appears the author received feedback regarding her lack of link list online because she's added a blog link to the sites she discussed in the book: [...] Yay! :)

I found myself reading it thinking that a lot of it should be common sense, but there's so much within owning a business or working as a massage therapist in general that many people probably don't think about. It's exciting and fun and so many fine details can easily get lost in the fold.

Though skeptical at first with the title I had read some great reviews of this book so I thought that I would give it a try. It is full of tips on the dos and don'ts, what to wear to attract your ideal client, and how to live a great life doing the work that we love to do. It has been inspirational and has given me a lot of useful information as I am starting my first massage business. Not fearing making money was a very good lesson - as was charging what you are worth. Thank you Meagan for writing this book. I highly recommend it to any massage therapist out there working right now (or in school). How to take care of you so you are better at your work - very good point as it is easy for us as therapists to forget us!

Absolutely wonderful read! I enjoyed reading about Meagan and her background just as much as all the helpful advice! This book is a must have for any serious career minded massage therapist. Insightful, intuitive, practical and put in simple terms. None of the crap you don't need and all of the meat you do to get you on the right path for a succesful career!

As a 10 year practicing massage therapist it was exciting to find a book well written on my craft. She pointers she gives are not unheard of but it was a good refresher to make sure your delivering ultimate customer service. She gives special insights on the business side of what we do to ensure that every therapist has direction in order to succeed in this business. You can learn plenty for this book and so much more. I loved it and I highly recommend it to any new or veteran therapist. Our community needs people like us so do yourself a favor and buy this book!

Time seems to stand still --- we are "locked" in a perpetual now, and (sadly) can't go back or forward in time the way we do in space. I wish we could; we could skip the bad parts of life and relive the good ones ad nauseum; certain places in time could be home to us. On the other hand, it seems to fly, at least in the sense that it is unstoppable. Burdick does an amazing job grappling with these fundamental experiences, and trying to understand how --- if at all --- the brain makes it possible. I loved his New Yorker piece on this topic, and the book --- beautifully written --- has led to several fascinating conversations and beautiful memories and (I take it) impossible fantasies. A lovely, warm, almost poetic read.PS bought it on Amazon, delivered next day, very well made book, a pleasure to hold and read.

I was expecting a little more philosophical discussion (my bad). The book has many (and I mean "many") experiments with neurons firing at nanoseconds intervals from each other. If you like science and like this minutia, you'll love this book. Me? Not so much. Still, I did find it very interesting because it allowed me to see how science really can truly be. At times it felt to me that the research was asking how many angels can dance on the tip of a pin. The book, nevertheless, managed to hold my attention, mostly because I was more interested in an answer to the question posed by the title, which only came at the very end, and I did not find very satisfying. It involved, again, research delving into the subjective perception of people of various ages. I would have liked to see some research on how the sensations of the body itself, and not just the nanosecond intervals in the firing of neurons in the brain, affect how we perceive time as we age. I come from a world where truth is seen as emanating from the body, (what here is called "the gut"), not only from the brain. In my experience, now that my "eyes look upon the grave," I find that time seems to fly because my body has slowed down. Experience seems now like a movie stuck in a rapid fast forward motion. This is not a bad thing because when we look at a movie in fast forward motion, we see the follies and the comical parts of it more sharply, while the worries and the sorrows lose sharpness. Some people refer to this as wisdom. Perhaps when the author and the researchers get older they will understand this better.

A number of years ago an eccentric, idiosyncratic Lepidopterist announced--in a book about butterflies!--that he had discovered a universal law that described the true nature of time and would soon publish a mathematical demonstration of same. He never did, and he's dead now, so presumably his secret of time died with him. He was much given to grandiosity and I don't for a moment believe he had such a secret, but if he did, more's the pity he didn't reveal it because no one in the world, as far as we know, knows the true nature of time--or even whether it exists. This book carefully reviews the many experimental studies and theoretical examinations of the subject. The closest it can come to a synthesis is that the nature of time seems inextricably connected to how it is perceived by us (and, apparently, other creatures). We do not even know if the near-universal perception that time "moves faster" as we age has any empirical validity. If for no other reason, read this book as a reminder that our species has much to be humble about and that there is much more that we don't know or understand than we are wont to believe. By the way, I am an old coot, but I found "Why Time Flies" to be a rather slow read.

This is a beautiful and riveting book. It mixes science with personal reflection and made me stop several times while reading it to consider my own relationship with time, my brain, and my sensations of life and moments passing. Burdick, a former nominee for the National Book Award, is such a clear writer. He's like a friendly guide, pointing out a million things that you would never see on your own. Buy this book and be quietly spellbound.

Alan Burdick is a writer, and by that definition, a thinker. He may or may not be a scientist although he claims that this book is ‘mostly’ a scientific inquiry. As inquiries go, Burdick has picked an awfully complex subject. As science goes, there is still no grand scientific verdict on what time is all about. No answer appears in this book either. So what is the point of reading it? This book is rich in the form of questions posed. The questions are the little fires that Burdick lights for us and make us think long and hard about them as they had made him think, as he tells us, in his solitude under the stars.Does time pass us by as we so often think, or do we pass time by? In that same vein, Burdick asks whether it is the clock that count the numbers printed on it – or we do? He is reminded that Aristotle had said that ‘if there cannot be anyone to count, there cannot be anything that can be counted’. This is part of the kind of questions that seemingly have no answers (Does a falling tree make a sound if there is no one to hear it?) His ruminations on time and clocks bring him to consider the circadian clock. He considers not just what this clock does for us as individuals but also how the circadian clock synchronises our activities with that of others that share this world with us, after all, other humans, at least, have their own circadian clocks, and even molds grow to their own circadian rhythm.Burdick gets up to date with a modern term, ‘real time’. We talk about it and use this phrase all the time but what does it mean? What is real time? Burdick discusses the idea of real time in the context of neuroscience and how our brain processes ‘the arrival times of different bits of data’ and how it then reintegrates the so that we get a ‘unified experience’.From the myriad stories and observations that he tells, we come to appreciate Burdick the man, a child of time trying to keep a distance in order to observe, and yet remain joyfully attached.
