This might be how the author made $100,000 a year but it's not practical advice for others. I read this entire book in under a couple hours. All the way through I kept thinking, "is this it," it has to get better than this. Her "how to's" include such things as don't wear scrubs and sneakers and dress high class to get high class customers. She even gives a website to order clothes from. I laughed when I went there and saw the prices. No way am I going to do massage in clothing that costs more than what I am making an hour doing massage. The book is basically about getting rich working "for the stars, VIP clients," and big name hotels. She brags of month long vacations, being flown to NY by a well known model at a fee of $1500.00 with a $600.00 tip. Good for her. What I wanted was some useful marketing tips that would work for those of us who are looking to build a practice in our hometown and make a decent living. I and most other therapists I know have no desire to massage big name celebrities. Sorry, didn't find anything useful in this book, complete waste of time.
A lot of the information that Meagan provides is good business sense. You have to do a lot up front to reap the rewards later. Setting yourself a part in the beginning will go a long way for you. I have read several of the chapters and on my way to finishing the book. Her focus on "dressing for the clients you want" does not bother me like some. I have worked in corporate America for years and dressing for the job you want, not the one you have, is a thing that a lot of people do. A lot of this stuff is about presentation and marketing yourself.
This is a well written book and has some really good ideas. I think it is more for females therapists than males, but still has good information for someone wanting to start their own massage business. I would say it is a must read for anyone just starting out, as it will keep you from getting into situations that would not be in your businesses best interest. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 mostly because I felt like the information was better suited to larger cities than I work in. The sections on startups, ethics, dress, and attitude will help you go in the right direction.
This is an easy read (plowed thru in 24 hours), is well-written, and has information on a lot of relevant subjects. A great book if you want to find out what it's like to work in a hotel, spa, or for celebrities without actually doing it first. Also gives good info on insurance billing. Best info, I think, is the section that describes what your clients are expecting from you and your business materials and practices.Problem is that she mentions links for products throughout the book and says they'll be listed on her website, [...], but they're not. No links, just further selling of her book... rather disappointing, considering I was really excited about this book. She even repeats the adage of under-promising and over-delivering, but doesn't follow it herself, stripping some of her own authority...UPDATE: It appears the author received feedback regarding her lack of link list online because she's added a blog link to the sites she discussed in the book: [...] Yay! :)
A lot of this book is full of tips and tricks that Meagan has used and found to work in her own practice. I found myself reading it thinking that a lot of it should be common sense, but there's so much within owning a business or working as a massage therapist in general that many people probably don't think about. It's exciting and fun and so many fine details can easily get lost in the fold.
Though skeptical at first with the title I had read some great reviews of this book so I thought that I would give it a try. It is full of tips on the dos and don'ts, what to wear to attract your ideal client, and how to live a great life doing the work that we love to do. It has been inspirational and has given me a lot of useful information as I am starting my first massage business. Not fearing making money was a very good lesson - as was charging what you are worth. Thank you Meagan for writing this book. I highly recommend it to any massage therapist out there working right now (or in school). How to take care of you so you are better at your work - very good point as it is easy for us as therapists to forget us!
Absolutely wonderful read! I enjoyed reading about Meagan and her background just as much as all the helpful advice! This book is a must have for any serious career minded massage therapist. Insightful, intuitive, practical and put in simple terms. None of the crap you don't need and all of the meat you do to get you on the right path for a succesful career!
As a 10 year practicing massage therapist it was exciting to find a book well written on my craft. She pointers she gives are not unheard of but it was a good refresher to make sure your delivering ultimate customer service. She gives special insights on the business side of what we do to ensure that every therapist has direction in order to succeed in this business. You can learn plenty for this book and so much more. I loved it and I highly recommend it to any new or veteran therapist. Our community needs people like us so do yourself a favor and buy this book!
