The book is decent, but the author demonstrates a certain naivety in many of the suggestions he makes, indicating that they're backed by significant research that just hasn't determined cause and effect.Notably, he states that all of the "other" diets out there (note that he implies this book is not a diet, but it is - any method of eating is a diet) ultimately work by creating a calorie deficit as if to imply that by following this book, you can lose weight without a deficit - but thermodynamics would disagree. Do certain foods provide equivalent satiety to other foods but for lower calories? Yes, there's research behind that. But the author repeatedly states that cutting calories and creating a deficit isn't the right way to lose weight as it can hurt performance, and yet the *only* way to lose weight is via a calorie deficit. There is literally no other way.There are additional points of information that are only correlation (e.g. those who eat breakfast are leaner than those who don't - and those people also exercise more, smoke less, and a host of other factors that make them healthier) and further statements that are generally debunked, particularly nutrient timing around whether it's best to eat carbs, proteins, or fats at different times of day (he says carbs in the morning, protein at night, but there aren't studies that he references or that I've found that actually prove causation here). Note that I'm not talking about post-workout nutrition which has been studied extensively and for which there is support for carb and protein consumption immediately post workout to maximize both glycogenesis and protein synthesis.The author also states that if you eat carbs late at night, they are "more likely to turn to fat" which has been proven patently false over and over again (I'm tired of reading and hearing this). De novo lipogenesis (the conversion of carbohydrate to triglycerides) is jokingly low (a few grams a day) except in cases of extreme carbohydrate overfeeding. Carbohydrate is burned in preference to fats when present which thus, in a caloric surplus, will cause overall adiposity to increase, but carbs themselves are very rarely converted to fat in any significant quantity.But overall, the book has decent suggestions and if you're going from a standard, untracked diet to a measured one, this'll help you, but let's call it was it is - a diet. The author would benefit from being more truthful to the science instead of pretending that there is a magical way to lose weight without going into a calorie deficit. Even despite many of the pros stating that they go to sometimes drastic measures to manage weight, he acts as though this diet makes it simple and easy. Peak performance is not natural, the body cares about survival, not a few seconds off your 5k. Elite performance will require sacrifice.

I want to preface my review by stating that I have extensive background in exercise science, nutrition and human performance. There is very little from a nutrition or performance standpoint that I am not already familiar with as I keep up with most peer reviewed academic journals. Having said that, I learned a great deal from Mr Fitzgerald's book. Perhaps more importantly, I was able to put this knowledge into practice. I cannot say enough good things about the brilliance that is this book. If you are serious about honing your performance, you should buy this book.About me: I am a serious runner in my mid 30's who averages about 100 miles per week. I mostly stick to 5k's and 10k's, but did my first marathon last year and came in at 2:59. I was a state runner at high school, but never quite fast enough to make the college grade. My 800m repeats are fast as are my miles, but I knew that in order to make serious PR gains I needed to drop weight in a healthy way. This book has been by blueprint for getting there. The book has proved to be so comprehensive, well-researched and insightful. It's principles are beautifully and artfully laid out. For the past 4 months I've been following closely the dietary quality score approach and managing my hunger and I've gone from 165 lbs to 155 (I hit my goal weight a few days ago!) The last 5 lbs were stubbornly difficult to shed, but I got there. This spring I'm going to see how my new racing weight will allow me perform at my 2nd marathon. Stay tuned!The Dietary Quality Score is such a holistic, refreshing approach to eating. I found it so outstanding that I created a family DQS chart for our little boy with magnets on the refrigerator. We challenge him to get as high of a score as possible every day. Thanks Mr Fitzgerald for your comprehensive work!

Age group competitive marathoner here.The book is meant as a complement to calorie tracking, with tips on what healthy foods to eat and some pointers to how many carbs are needed in an athlete's diet which is helpful. It's more of a Daniel's formula (building blocks) than Pfitzinger approach (ready to use plans), to put it in runner's terms. It's useful for people who haven't been paying attention to their eating habits and nutrition, probably even eye-opening to the "if the furnace is hot enough..." people, but not a lot of new things to learn for those who are not new to healthy eating.The DQS App and methodology don't add much, you could go on a "nuts and wine" diet and congratulate yourself with great daily DQS scores.

Another solid endurance sport nutritional book from Matt Fitzgerald, this one focusing on weight control. It can be a challenge to balance the energy needs and hunger management associated with endurance training with the weight control many of us desire for better performance. This book has plenty of useful strategies, grounded in nutritional science. Difference lifestyles and performance levels are considered. I do wish he was a little bit clearer on how weight loss actually occurs (you need a calorie deficit and the book seems to sometimes dance around that). Overall, recommended for anyone with an interest in the subject.

This poor review is for the digital book only.DO NOT BUY THE DIGITAL OR KINDLE VERSION. I was so disappointed to find out this book was a plain old PDF, which is a real pain in the butt to read on a screen device. You can't search, don't have fluid margins, can't increase the font size or change to night mode, etc.Huge disappointment in that regard, but the content in the book itself is wonderful. I recommend purchasing it in old-fashioned paperback.

A well-written and engaging book that, while focused on game design, provides insights far beyond the world of game design and is full of useful advice for anyone designing anything.The book guides the reader through the entire design process, starting with discussing the designer's ultimate objective (to create an experience); continuing through understanding the elements that comprise games, addressing the needs of players, exploring the fundamental types of game mechanics, developing game worlds; and concluding with how to deal with clients, how to pitch a game, and how games transform their audiences.Along the way, the author present a series of 100 "lenses" through which designers can focus on specific aspects of their design. Each lens provides a series of questions that help designers stay on track during the course of their design. The author also sells a card set called "A Deck of Lenses" which present these lenses with illustrations [...] The deck of lenses is also available as an smart phone/tablet app [...]As I noted above, many of the concepts in this book can be applied to not only game design, but also provide insights that can be applied to other fields as well. I'm a big fan of Walt Disney Imagineering, and found that many of the design principles in this book are the same principles used by the Imagineers in the design of Disney theme parks. Based on the author's background (Jesse Schell is a former Imagineer), this wasn't too big a surprise, but I still find the parallels worth noting.I highly recommend this book to anyone working in the game industry, as well as anyone interested in design in general. You'll be glad you added this book to your library.

This book is awesome. I'm just a beginner studying Gaming Design and this works for me. It works a lot on concepts, induces some exercises and self-criticizing about how to think when creating content. Goes much more theoretical than practical so if you need to learn about Coding, this is not your book. Expect reading a lot about every type possible of "game", not only about the electronic-modern type, but also card-game, story-telling game, etc.

Fantastically good book on game design. This is not, however, a beginner book, in my opinion. This is definitely something to read if you've already started designing a game, or have some experience in game design. Regardless, it carries with it quite a bit of good advice and theory on many aspects of making games. Truly a book on the art (and craft) of game design.This book goes really well with the book "Challenges for Game Designers" by Brenda (Braithwaite)Romero and Ian Schreiber.

Schell covers everything, quite literally everything. I found that the lenses he reveals are useful regardless of what you're doing. I am an in-house designer for a major corporation and can readily see how the topics covered can help in my "day job", both internally to working with the teams in the company, but also in addressing our customers and their needs.You won't get the technical "how to code something" information, or algorithms or strategies. You will get the underlying principles and guidance for building pretty much any project, games or otherwise.Thank you for publishing this Mr. Schell.

Let me start off by saying there are some very nice pieces in this book; however, the pictures, the cord, and the background of the book are all in WHITE! If one actually needs to see how something is done from pictures, it is very, very difficult to get directions from the cord(s) within the pictures. There are written step by step instructions for each, but here is what happened with me. I haven't macramed for decades and I forgot the names of the knots, so I went to the front of the book to look at how to tie said named knot, of which I spent 5 min trying to view the picture's detail. This is why I gave the book a 2. Also, I had to use a different size cord then was said to use in the book (availability issues) and it would have been nice to have information of lengths to use with different size cords. FYI-the cords I found at Micheal's, which were very limited and have no sizing on the packaging (buy the cord elsewhere; mine from amazon didn't arrive in a timely fashion), and I thought it funny too that the clerk at Michael's didn't know what macrame' was. Just sayin.

The aesthetics of some of the projects are pleasing (hence the one star) but it puzzles me how using white on white instructions for a craft book did not appear to be a bad idea for the author and her team.

I'm a creative artist: photographer, fiber artist, and painter. I created macrame pieces in the '70s and '80s so the craft is not new to me. I revisited macrame to expand my fiber work into home decor a few years ago and have been studying and researching many current macrame artists. I follow this author on Instagram and I'm a fan of her designs and her work overall. However, I am disappointed in this publication of some of her designs. I agree with several other reviewers: Why in the WORLD did the author and her team not see that photographing white cord on a white background was a bad idea, especially for a book that relies on visual imagery? Maybe a better photographer with experience with commercial photography and/or book design would have been able to make this work, but it fails. This really takes an otherwise outstanding book down to almost an amateur level. This is an EXCELLENT study guide book for the OT Books of Ezra, Haggai and Zechariah. Dr Wiersbe does a magnificent job of joining scores of other supporting scriptures so that, at the end, I had an exhaustive lesson on just how much history is "His Story." The linkage of scripture and that linkage is explained by Dr Wiersbe was just so interesting, educational and uplifting for me. These times try our souls. Dr Wiersbe's work explains the what, why and how, supported by scripture. The men's group that I belong to has now done 6 of Dr Wiersbe's "BE" series books. We're shortly going to take on another. Dr Wiersbe has taken his gift and shared it with us who seek to increase our faith and understand our God, Our Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Caution, if you decided to review all the scriptural reference verses in the chapters, you must be patient in your reading. They are exhaustive, but add SO much to the study.

I love Warren Wiersbe and his books but this one is very misleading. It says it's a commentary on the minor prophets which makes it sound like all 12. It only covers three prophets: Ezra, Haggai, and Zachariah. Last I checked Ezra is not a minor prophet which means the book only covers two. I'm disappointed that it's not all 12 but it's good anyway.

We are using this study guide in our Sunday School class now. Even though it's on three prophets from the old testament, it is speaking to specific issues we face in our society today. We had prayed about what we should study next, and at first I wasn't sure we had selected the topic the Lord had for us. But once we got into the book, we knew that God was guiding us in what we still need to be doing today, thousands of years after the prophets spoke these words. Wiersbe always does a great job of helping the reader understand God's Word at a deeper level. Great study!

Mr Wiersbe write on a level that people can understand. I will be buying more of his books. I currently have 4.These are books that I will NOT loan to others... they are priced right so I'll just buy them a copy as a gift.

We are using this as our study guide as we study selected Minor Prophets. As with all other Warren Wiersbe's "Be Series" books they give us background and insight into the Bible as a good commentary.

Great book on some of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. Anything Warren Wiersbe writes is always practical and informative and enables every believer to be encouraged in their walk and gives understanding in a clear and concise way to scripture.

I am always so challenged by Wiersbe's commentaries. Be Heroic is an incredibly deep, power-packed Bible study! I highly recommend it to parents who want to be heroic for our Savior, in our generation, and for our kids!

This is the 23rd book in the "Be Series" that I have used in my Bible studies. So often I have breezed through the minor prophets without digesting how "meaty" they are. Minor is the wrong word to use to label these heroic prophets. Which will be number 24? I am so thankful for this series!

I loved this book and I don’t even like motorcycles! I don’t like bikes. Never interested me, even though my dad had a few. Too noisy, not enough protection, and seemed a little dull. I picked this up for a friend and reluctantly started reading. I went through a quarter of the book before I realized I was enjoying the stories. It’s well written, the stories are fun, and the scripture he shares is spot on. Tim brings us along with his stories and adventures of the open road and I hope there’s more from him in the future!

A very easy reading book, but thought provoking.The stories are fun and the insights really get you thinking.Would make a great study guide for a small group. Easy-to-follow with questions at the end get you thinking. This is definitely a book I'm going to have to read again to get more out of it. It puts out a lot of challenges for where your faith is with God and where your walk is.

Whether he is describing the vistas on the open road, the mechanics of some pitfalls, or encouragement for the spirit, Tim Riter's devotional book for motorcycle riders is also written for the non-riders in life. His tone is thoughtful, but not preachy. His style is easy, but not trite. Additionally, his engagement with the reader is practical, and the questions at the end of his chapters promote thought and encourage the reader to live in the applications of the truth he is discussing. Bless yourself by purchasing a copy! I know that I will reread this book again and again.

I took a long hiatus from riding 1971-2000, until I bought my new BMW 1150 GS, in 2006 a HD V-Rod Screaming Eagle, in late 2013 a 2014 HD Ultra Limited and last year a 2018 HD Heritage Classic (114 Engine). Riding on two wheels in open air through God’s creation is euphoric, exhilarating, cathartic and most of all humbling...and Tim says it all in his book. His perspectives are non-generational, appeal to young and old, from newbie to lifer, and even to non-riders. All can grasp his relationship with God from his view of the freedom of the Open Road on his bike. Thank you Tim! Ride on and God Bless you!

This book has a good story to tell, I just wish it was told in a different way. The author creates "conversations" between the figures in the book and the dialogue can be pretty cheesy, especially in the later stages of the book.My favorite parts are the back stories when new characters are introduced, because they are not told in that manner. They are well written and interesting and I think I would have liked to see the whole book written that way.And, the intro by Seth Rogen Evan Goldberg is just horrible. The book takes itself way more seriously than they do and they do it a real disservice. If they take the movie they are making based on this book just as seriously, it's in real trouble.

A good history on the 8 and 16-bit era of consoles, and the continuous one-upmanship between the frontrunners of the industry at the time (Nintendo and Sega).Unfortunately, the timeline felt a bit confusing and a lot of the dialogue and depictions felt a bit embellished. Also, I feel quite a bit was embellished, and there was too much focus on Tom Kalinske's role and Sega's position as the industry underdog. It feels more like a character driven story with Kalinske as protagonist than a documentary or history on that generation of consoles.I'm glad I read it, but do take some of it with a grain of salt. Still completely worth a read if you're curious about the "behind the scenes" aspects of the 8 and 16-bit era Nintendo and Sega company politics.

This has been a controversial book for sure, but I think that is more for the writing style and the name of the book. I feel it should have had a more SEGA centric title to give broader scope of what was really written. The dialogue is created to reflect the personalities and is not from record, but created. While people complain about this, I haven't seen too many disputes about the actual content being false or misleading. Definitely worth a read if you grew up with Sega and wondered about how the company grew or would like to hear the inside story on it's rise...and collapse.

This is a very readable book that encapsulates a brief period of time where the video game console market expanded after the famed crash, and subsequent revival by Nintendo. The narrative told is the classic improbable hero against seemingly insurmountable odds. Sega came from being a marginalized also-ran to a dominant force in the industry in less than 3 years. While the story uses video game systems as the backdrop, the real story is about how advertising can make the difference in selling a product. Nintendo was challenged to re-think how it sold to the consumer based on Sega's audacious advertising campaigns. They really did have a lasting effect on how video games (and systems) are sold -but it could be argued for the consumer tech industry at large. But it has to be understood that this book is not a pure history/analysis like "I am Error" - it is a narrative where it is clear that there is a significant amount of creative license being taken with events and conversations. A good read.

I was once part of the video games industry. I found it fascinating and quite believable what happened behind the science and in public between Sega and Nintendo. I remember well the congressional hearing. Looking back, I find their concerns well-founded, but it was like holding back the tide. One of the games I worked on was banned in Germany for it's violent content. I look at it now and compare it to the mildest games for sale nowadays and I laugh.This book is a good read. I originally borrowed this book from the library, but later I bought it so I could read it again. I'm about 3/4ths through it and it is still good.

Fairly interesting for children of the 90s, but I thought it went on too long and spent too much time on some personal relationships in companies that didn't really seem to affect the historical record of the console wars. This book focuses mainly on Sega. A more apt title may have been, "Sega Against the World"

My fiance isn't a fan of video games and even she was interested while I was listening to this. It's honestly more about marketing than anything else, so if you have some aspiring marketing student in the family, they will probably like this. Also, it's nice to get some insider info on how things worked out. I wish they would do one for the following generation when Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube were out

Parker Palmer’s graceful little book LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK is the best work I’ve ever read on discernment and vocation.In six chapters and just under 120 elegantly written pages, Palmer presses home the point that vocation emerges from within us and that we must listen carefully to our own lives if we are to discover it. Taking on someone else’s concept of calling or subjecting ourselves to an external and alien set of values and objectives will do violence to ourselves and to our usefulness—Palmer would probably avoid the word—to our community and our world. Throughout, the author’s rooting in Quaker patterns and rhythms is evident, but this book is anything but sectarian and will be welcomed—indeed, has been welcomed, for it was published in the year 2000—by readers of many faiths and perhaps of none.Chapter I, ‘Listening to Life’, argues that one’s life is worthy of study and profoundly worth listening to. ‘The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient, savvy, self-sufficient, and yet exceedingly shy. If we want to see a wild animal, the last thing we should do is go crashing through the woods, shouting for the creature to come out. But if we are willing to walk quietly into the woods and sit silently for an hour or two at the base of a tree, the creature we are waiting for may well emerge, and out of the corner of an eye we will catch a glimpse of the precious wildness we seek.’In his second chapter (‘Now I Become Myself’), Palmer initiates in earnest the autobiographical transparency that he will sustain through the book, lending to his lines an authenticity that is arguably their most compelling feature. After having tried and failed over several episodes to forge a sense of vocational and personal identity, Parker writes that ‘(t)today I understand vocation quite differently—not as a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just beyond my reach but accepting the treasure of true self I already possess. Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.’The author urge us not to ‘wear other people’s faces’ and to realize that ‘(t)he deepest vocational question is not “What ought I to do with my life?” It is the more elemental and demanding “Who am I? What is my nature?”.’Yet Palmer does not imagine that this discovery of one’s true self occurs often without pain. ‘Most of us’, he avers, ‘arrive at a sense of self and vocation only after a long journey through alien lands … before we come to that center, full of light, we must travel in the dark. Darkness is not the whole of the story—every pilgrimage has passages of loveliness and joy—but it is the part of the story most often left untold.’ This ultimate qualifier is another item that, to this reader’s ears, lends the ring of truth to Palmer’s adventure. I say this because my own journeying after true vocation has, like Palmer’s, led me through both sunlight and darkness, yet I cannot say that any of the miles traveled has been entirely dark, entirely bleak, and certainly not entirely regrettable. Unlike many more mechanical treatments of the topic, Palmer’s notion of vocational discovery leads him to value the path rather than merely the destination.One finds, in this second and longest of Palmer’s chapters, refreshingly important roles to be played by fear, failure, and ordinariness. In my view, this makes LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK accessible to those of us who resonate with Palmer’s journey but could never write so elegantly of our own.Chapter III is titled ‘When Way Closes’. The missing article is not a typo, but rather a nod to the Quaker sense of ‘Way’. In the discourse of the Friends, we learn, ‘way opens’ and ‘way closes’. Palmer traces a givenness to vocation, a created anchoring in our persons that does not make all things possible. Instead, the way each of us is both opens doors and closes doors. Sometimes the closing brings embarrassment and shame.‘It would be nice if our limits did not reveal themselves in such embarrassing ways as getting fired from a job. But if you are like me and don’t readily admit your limits, embarrassment may be the only way to get your attention. I go on full alert only when I am blocked or get derailed or flat-out fail. Then, finally, I may be forced to face my nature and find out whether I can make something of both my gifts and my limitations.’Palmer develops the role played by our limitations by counterposing the ‘oughts’ that we often heed in our vocational adventure to the ‘ecology of life’ in which we find a proper place to stand and to be. In this third chapter, this Christian reader finds the theological undergirding to Palmer’s prose that the author often touches upon only lightly. It is, for Palmer, the ‘God of reality’ who ‘dwells quietly in the root system of the very nature of things’. He speaks easily of ‘one’s created nature’. When one finally comes to rest within this ecology burnout is not the inevitable outcome of passionate labor. Rather, ‘(w)hen the gift I give to the other is integral to my own nature, when it comes from a place of organic reality within me, it will renew itself—and me—even as I give it away.’‘All the Way Down’ (Chapter IV) suggests that an excruciating read lies just ahead and the title does not deceive, for in this fourth chapter Palmer sketches out for us his two debilitating experiences of depression. Neither reducing nor simplifying the causes of depression—in fact he calls the thing a ‘mystery’—Palmer managed in his own suffering to find his way to viewing depression as his friend. It took him all the way down to where it was safe to stand. Following upon his previous description of ‘the God of reality’, Parker borrows Tillich’s description of God as the ground of being: ’I had always imagined God to be in the same general direction was everything else I valued: up … I had to be forced underground before I could understand that the way to God is not up but down.’Thankfully, Palmer does not write prescriptively about the ways (plural) into depression nor the ways (again, note the plural) out. His own recovery remains something of a mystery, captured in the magnificent poem with which he graces the conclusion of Chapter IV. Yet for him, his submission to the vocational ‘oughts’ by which he permitted himself for years to be hounded prepared the way down in the darkness. There he found not only God, but himself as well.Chapter V (‘Leading from Within’) now turns outward to the damage and the health that a leader can bring to the wider community and, indeed, to the world. We project both shadows and light onto the world. ‘A good leader is intensely aware of the interplay of inner shadow and light, lest the act of leadership do more harm than good.’In this chapter, any hint that vocation is essentially a narcissistic pursuit evaporates. For Palmer, vocation begins within but eventually projects itself onto one’s world. He writes insightfully of the ways leaders fashion a community from misguided starting points and, happily, also via the freedom that comes from authentic vocation. Let me single out at some length a few of Parker’s words on fear as motivator:‘As one who is no stranger to fear, I have had to read those words with care so as not to twist them into a discouraging counsel of perfection. “Be not afraid” does not mean we cannot have fear. Everyone has fear, and people who embrace the call to leadership often find fear abounding. Instead, the words say we do not need to be the fear we have. We do not have to lead from a place of fear, thereby engendering a world in which fear is multiplied.We have places of fear inside of us, but we have other places as well—places with names like trust and hope and faith. We can choose to lead from one of those places, to stand on ground that is not riddled with the fault lines of fear, to move toward others from a place of promise instead of anxiety. As we stand in one of those places, fear may remain close at hand and our spirits may still tremble. But now we stand on ground that will support us, ground from which we may lead others towards a more trustworthy, more hopeful, more faithful way of being in the world.’This reviewer—like Palmer, no stranger to fear—thrills to such a sound and realistic assessment of the kind of ‘fearlessness’ that embraces reality and yet dares to lead, unparalyzed.In his concluding chapter (VI, ‘There is a Season’), Palmer departs from his now familiar approach to speak of how ‘the quest for selfhood and vocation’ follow the recurring patterns and rhythms of the four seasons. This chapter alone would justify keeping Let Your Life Speak within arm’s reach, to be read and re-read at the calendar’s and the seasons’ turnings.One can hardly read Palmer’s exceedingly transparent work on vocation and then write for others about it without a bit of transparency of his own. After twelve years of leadership in a relatively prominent position—at least for the proportions of this review’s little world—I recently hit the wall at the end of a particularly grueling vocational mile. This is not without its emotional violence, its sense of failure and disillusionment, its return to the root considerations of vocational identity, and its forceful requirement to look again and to look within for wisdom about next steps. For me, each page of Palmer’s LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK brought both balm and direction. Many brought exhilaration as well.I offer this review in hopes that Palmer will be a bit more widely read for those, like me, who find a wise mentor the doctor’s very order.

Instead, I got an awakening about exploring the beauties of life within myself and the world around me and beyond. It’s a mere 109 pages but I found myself rereading much of it to really grasp and love the concepts.Though this book is Christian based, it’s very universal in its language and idea so anyone from any faith can pick this up and be blown away.

I had never before come across this author, but got the book when another writer quoted from it. I found it helpful, easy to read, and it had some seminal things to say about letting go of the external pressures to be and do things a certain way. Allowing oneself to be what we were born to be, irrespective of where we stand in the pecking order was very refreshing. The "you can be anything you want to be" message has limitations since there is only just so much room for prize-winning anythings, and a depressed economy makes getting to the top even more difficult, so a sense of failure is the inevitable outcome if that is the way we want to live our lives. Being exactly who you are and getting in touch with yourself at this deepest level leaves you with a certain amount of relief when he assures us that fulfilling our lives by allowing ourselves to be who we actually are leads to the greater sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. If I have any criticism of this book it would be that it was a little too self-absorbed, but then, I have to admit that he used his own experiences to help us with ours, and it was skilfully done. The religious references were restrained, so anyone of any faith or of no faith could relate to what he is trying to say. Bottom line - Parker J Palmer deserves his status as one of the better writers of this genre. I am not sorry I got this book.

This book contains some great advice ... even wisdom ... but I felt the author's writing style was a tad foggy.I teach a class on how to create your life's timeline. Some people call the timeline the DASH. The dash on your grave marker between your birth and death date. I recommend to my students to include the good, bad and ugly on the timeline to help your family and friends not only learn about you but also learn some valued life lessons. To emphasize the importance of including mistakes on your timeline, I plan to reference the author's statement: “Many young people today journey in the dark, as the young always have, and we elders do them a disservice when we withhold the shadowy parts of our lives. When I was young, there were very few elders willing to talk about the darkness; most of them pretended that success was all they had ever known. As the darkness began to descend on me in my early twenties, I thought I had developed a unique and terminal case of failure. I did not realize that I had merely embarked on a journey toward joining the human race.”

This is a fantastic book that helped me to make some important decisions regarding the direction of my career when I was at a crossroads in my life. The premise upon which this book is basically based on the old adage, "To Thy Own Self Be True," but this book goes very much beyond this - it actually unpacks this adage and applies it concretely to one's career choices and other things. It also seems to hold up a mirror to the things that we tell ourselves that prevent us from leading a more vocationally liberated life. Truly, I have been a world-weary reader of inspirational books, but this is one new read that I absolutely loved! Thank you Parker Palmer for writing this illuminating book!
