Emilio D'Alessandro was effectively Kubrick's personal assistant for thirty years. An Italian ex-racing driver (!), he freely admits he knows nothing about film, and, indeed, had never viewed even a single Kubrick film from beginning to end until after having worked with the man on a daily basis for decades. (Also, one very tiny quibble: the photos in the book are mostly small and rather fuzzily reproduced.)What this is, really, is a joint biography of two families, the D'Alessandros and the Kubricks. Sensitively written (with the participation of Filippo Ulivieri) the book transports you into Kubrick's working household, and a portrait of the great director built up through a thousand details of daily life and casual interactions between the director and others. There are no boardroom power meetings here, and no premiers, There is just the man. Workaholic, driven, and hugely intelligent, yes. But also anxious, kind, decent, and someone who enjoyed being constantly with his family (including a herd of beloved pets). Stanley Kubrick pulled off the near miracle of turning epic film-making into a home business. So many books serve to perpetuate the myth behind the man; a brooding, reclusive, obsessive-compulsive control freak. And though in many ways this book reinforces those notions, what makes this book so special is that it gives us context through real life, behind-the-scenes and private moment anecdotes which end up softening the myths. Emilio was an essential cog to the Kubrick machine. A trustworthy friend and ally who Kubrick relied on for his ingenuity, strong work ethic, and frankness. Their bond was so unique and special and this book articulates that bond so well.This book is beautiful and indispensable. There is no dirt, no juicy gossip. Just a 30 year journey between two friends. I couldn't put it down.

My headline isn't referring to Kubrick, it refers instead to Emilio D'Alessandro, the guy who was the only assistant Kubrick completely trusted for the last 20 years or so of his life. Delicate and colorful, we used these to make a banner for my daughter's birthday party. The tiles can be re-arranged to form a different banner. The Amazon listing does not say how many tiles of each letter there is, so I'm copying it here:8 tiles: florals5 tiles each: A,E4 tiles each: H,O3 tiles each: B, C, D, G, I, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, Y2 tiles each: F, J, K, U, V, W1 tile each: Q, X, Z

I bought this garland to use at my wedding. Words to describe our wedding vibe: delicate, pastel, vintage, and rustic. This garland is perfect. The botanical print is lovely and I like the clean, simplicity of the font used.The only thing I would change about this garland is the metallic gold. On the back of the package it says "Tiles are printed with Metallic Gold inks." The metallic gold isn't really metallic. It also reads as almost a brown instead of a gold. I wish they would have used real metallic ink for the letters because that would another layer of style and class to the already lovely design. Small quibble though.

Not only is the design gorgeous and on nice heavy card stock, but you also get a CRAZY amount of letters! I was able to make 3 banners for a baby shower. When the party was over I was able to take the banner apart and put back in the sliding box to use some other time. The only thing I suggest is to buy additional ribbon if you're planning on making a larger banner. Seriously don't hesitate, it's worth every dollar.

This product is definitely worth the price. Rifle Paper Co products are so beautiful and this garland is no exception. The ribbon it comes with is white, however, not pink as shown in some photos.This will be perfect for a wedding, or any sort of bridal/baby shower, or any spring/summer event. You can make multiple phrases - I think that I made at least 5 wedding themed phrases with mine.Sturdy discs, strong ribbon. <3

I bought these garlands (first only found them on Amazon but now they're being sold on Anthro) for a baby shower. Then it was my son's birthday. Then it was Christmas. And then Valentine's.... and somehow I've managed to keep up a running stream of words in my house for the past 6 months. I am obsessed with Rifle Paper Co and this garland is beautiful. Lovely colors. Lots of letters so you can use them in a variety of ways and say pretty much everything you want to, and also it includes floral garland flags that are totally adorable. I love them and I am so happy that I purchased. Also, must add that the paper is good quality and sturdy. My 16 month old got into the box and got a hold of a few and they are still in good condition.

Exactly what I was looking for, customizable to make my own phrases. The price point is perfect for a banner I'll be using over and over for multiple occasions. Product is high quality and very pretty. I love that it comes with a standard size of ribbon so if I ever need to replace it, then I can pick it up at a local craft store instead of rendering the product useless with replacement parts that cannot be readily located.

In true Rifle Paper Co form, this garland is beautiful. As other reviewers noted, the script is more of a bronze than a gold, and the ribbon is white (not pink as shown.) I wish that it had come with a longer ribbon or a second ribbon, as it was a bit of a squeeze fitting our phrase (granted, it was 27 characters). There are also a couple of letters that could use extras (plenty of A's and E's, not enough O's and U's!) Overall, however, I am very pleased with it- we are placing it on display in our nursery, and it could easily be used for a variety of celebrations.

So pretty! Great quality paper, had plenty of string. It really looks beautiful!! You can spell basically anything, so many letters. Shipped in two days. Can't wait for people to see it for my baby girls first birthday party! Yay!!

I found this book to be very enlightening. I had started reading Noli me Tangere, by Jose Rizal, and found myself asking what happened in Philippines before this, to cause the circumstances described by Jose Rizal. The book filled in all the blanks of nearly 400 years of occupation and the attempted conquests of the Philippine people by various European countries, and finally of the United States. Because this book was first published in 1905, it left out most modern history from the 20th century to today, but did a fine job of covering the early explorers that created the atmosphere that existed in the Philippines and the world at the time of Jose Rizal's Noli me Tangere.

The book has little value for understanding the modern history of the Philippines. It is a reprint of an old textbook employed by the Americans in the Philippines soon after the American occupation. However, it may be of interest as an example of how the American's presented the history of the islands.

A good book and interesting to read. Since I have traveled there several times I wanted to learn more about the history. This was a good book to increase my knowledge of the country.

Copyright 1905.Relates Philippine history to worldwide events such as how the reformation movement influenced Catholicism in the Philippines and how Columbus's discovery of the Americas influenced exploration in Asia.

Good reference material if you want to learn about the Philippines and her history. Also a good reference for college students or simply anyone who cares about Philippines.

An account of history in the Pacific that was quick, informative and entertaining. I will look for more writing by David Barrows.

It's an informative and interesting book. Learned a lot about this country and will be looking forward to reading more about it.

This is a cute potty-training book that doubles as an alphabet book. Children will learn about many different animals while the baby giraffe searches for an appropriate potty. At first, the giraffe is frightened and unwilling to try toilet training, but as he visits the different animals he is encouraged by their positive attitude and willingness to help him.The book is written in short rhymes as each letter of the alphabet is highlighted. A few of these rhymes are a bit far-fetched but I don’t believe the young readers will be bothered by it. American parents will need to explain that nappies are diapers. I would recommend it as a short read while the toddler is on the potty or as a repeated bedtime story to encourage a child who is resistant to toilet training.

I read out loud this cute story to my grandson & he loved it, even he liked the colorful illustrated characters. This book worked from the 3rd day of my purchase & changed my grandson’s habits, taught him how to use a potty, even I noticed he has not pooped in his pants since reading it. I would recommend this book to my friends, relatives and neighbor parents because they can potty train their child through this fun & effective way.

There are many ABC books and it is quite difficult to say which one your child will relate to more. For beginners it is always important to have bright colors and interesting pictures, as their learning is mostly visual at that point.The text in the book is for a reading age of 3-4 plus, with the exception of advanced readers. The rhymes will help the child remember the connection to the letter.This book is great for children under 5 to help with letters and letter sounds. Highly recommended download your copy today.

My three years old daughter loved this book and it's her favorite one now. This book has many colorful & great animal pictures and she really loves to see how they used to go bathroom for potty. I bought this to prepare for a course. This is more of an opinion book on how the media presents stats, there are some examples of how the stats are calculated, but not at any real depth. Really disappointed. Wish I would not have bought the Kindle version. I would have returned it. If you are looking for something to prep for a class or learning about statistics this is NOT your book. Keep looking. EZ Statistics from Barron's or the Schaum's books are pretty good.

Let me put it like this: My husband struggled a lot with this subject and didn't feel prepared at all.He is otherwise a 4.9 GPA student, but this subject had him completely confused.We bought this book and he used it a lot.This book enabled him to get an A in this class. There was no way he would have passed the class without this book.If you are required to take statistics in college, get this book. It'll help you more than any other official resource.

This book saved my Statistics! I'm a graduate student and I need to know about stats for my research. I have taken stats classes but I did not do well. In order to finish my dissertation I have to relearn it. This book talks about the basic concepts in plain English. I was able to understand the basic concepts that the professors never explained in the classes. Once the basics are understood, all the advanced Stats just make sense to me now. I also bought the Statistics for Dummies II from the same author and she talks about more advanced Statistics that I will be actually using for my dissertation. I highly recommend this book to those who are not good at Mathematics and Statistics and want to learn it from the basic, in plain English.

I wanted to broaden my knowledge of statistics without being overwhelmed, and this book was a great find as the explanations and the examples are very clearly stated and worked out in a fashion that was easy to follow. The author's deep knowledge, love of statistics, and coherent writing made reading this book a pleasure as it's provided my confidence to start digging deeper into more advanced topics related to statistics and probability.

Next week, about 30 high school science teachers will be taking the last of a series of five workshops intended to help them be more skilled. My task as #5 is to tune 'em up in statistics. I wanted a book they could take with them, one that was (1) relatively affordable, (2) a go-to in finding an appropriate approach to a wide range of statistical questions, and (3) reasonably up-to-date. After considerable search, I concluded this was likely to be a best fit.So why "Statistics for Dummies?"-- Most statistics books seemed to be either too-brief pamphlets or really really expensive texts. At the Amazon new book price of around $12, this sure seemed relatively affordable for the amount of information--Very good coverage of descriptive statistics, probability in theory & practice, inferential statistics for parametric situations, and clear strong apt advice to help achieve sound use of statistics and avoid some of the horrors, such as significance trolling.There are 21 chapters, organized into three sections --Part 1 (Vital Statistics About Statistics), Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, including everyday applications and tools of the trade such as definitions of variable, popularion, and confidence interval --Part II (Number-Crunching Basics), Chapters 5, 6, 7, on central tendency, graphing categorical data, graphing numerical data --Part IIII ( Distributions and the Central Limit Theorem), Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11 introducing random variables and the binomal distribution, the normal distribution, and the t-distribution, sampling distributions and the central limit theorem -- Part IV (Guestimating and Hypothesizing with Confidence) Chapters 12, 13, 14, 15, covering confidence concepts & indicators, p value concepts & applications, hypothesis testing formulae and examples --Part V ( Statistics Studies and the Hunt for a Meaningful Relationship) with Chapters 16, 17, 18, and 19 dealing mostly with correlations and regression for quantitative, normally distributed data, two-way tables and probabilities --Part VI is two bonus chapters, one on data sleuthing and the other on "ten surefire ways to boost your statistics exam score."There's a good index and an appendix with the Z-table, the t-table, a set of bionomial tables up to n=20 each with a page of specific instructions on how to get p values or otherwise use the three tables. In all, 370 pages in the style---typography, side icons, and profuse examples including worked-out computations, of the 'for dummies" series.ANY ALERTS? Yes.--As other reviewers have eloquently said, this is suuplementary, an adjunct, a source-book text not a substitute for a full-on course in statistics. However, it seems great for purposes such as mine where I can give the students sections to read and pages for finding...as handy for my own use--BOOK II IS NEEDED!!!! There is little on non-parametric measures beyond offering the median, mode, sem-interquartile range and such. Statistics for Dummies ii (which I review separately) is 390 pages covering the Chi Square test and its varied applications, as well as signed ranks, Kruskal-wallis, and the somewhat more advanced analyses such as regression, multiple regression, ANOVA, MANOVA, and dealing with non-linearity. Yes, there is some overlap but II is worth i's relatively low costOVERALL: The American Statistical Association released in March 2016 its first ever institutional statement on a major statistical policy (Wasserman and Lazar, The ASA's statement on p-values: context, process, and purpose.) This is NOT a book but a free. downloadable statement and does not compete with the published text such as "Statistics for Dummies."Some reviewers were concerned about a possible over-emphasis on warnings, advice, and no-nos as maybe filler material. So I cross-walked the ASA policy statements on p values re context, process, and purpose. EVERY ITEM ASA emphasized is covered in this book, vividly, often, and appropriately. To me, that's underscoring author Deborah J. Rumsey's mastery of her material and ability to communicate it --- and of a certain ESP since this book was written well-before the ASA statement.Thank you, Professor Rumsey.Bottom line: I highly recommend "Statistics for Dummies."

I am still plowing thru this book to meet my goal to get a comprehensive, conceptual understanding of statistical concepts and related math, not an ability to "do" statistics in the mathematical sense. The beginning sections were easy to understand and I was eager to keep going. Unfortunately, the author's text and graphs for the (much more complicated) topics presented in Section 3, Distributions and the Central Limit Theorem, were not up to her earlier clear style. I had to resort to internet research in order to understand the mathematical concept, and notation, for combination possibilities. Then, I was lucky to land on a very good site for a clear description explaining "sampling" vs "taking samples". In some of the author's text, I could not tell which she was talking about. By far, my biggest gripe is omission of an explicit Y-axis in graphs. For most there is no Y-axis. For one, the Y-axis is "density", a term not in the index. Based on what I learned from the internet, the density technique of graphing is important enough to merit explanation. Without understanding the Y-axis of a graph, it is impossible to form a sentence "for this x we can state this y".Overall, I am pleased with this book, and will finish it but at a much slower rate due to much re-reading over and over, and then ultimately giving up to go to the internet. I admit that the later sections are an intellectual stretch for me.

I have three month old twins and was looking for an in depth guide to sleep training them. This book is not that guide. It provided useful information about the importance of sleep for babies, the need to recognize tired cues before babies are over tired and helped me to realize that many times when I thought my babies were just fussing for the sake of it they were tired and not as able to put themselves to sleep in midst of everything as they were at two months old. However the book was severely lacking in practical information in how to actually sleep train babies- and no trouble shooting for twin issues. I know they're supposed to go to sleep early, but what if one goes down and the other is up for two more hours, do I wake the late fall-asleeper when the early sleeper gets up in the morning? If one is showing tired cues long before the other at nap time, how do I get the not sleepy one to go down too? If one sleeps a six hour chunk and the other cannot surpass four hours, should I be waking the long sleeper to keep them on schedule?I finished the book in three days and still have no idea how to get my twins sleeping on the same schedule or how to trouble shoot twin specific sleeping issues.He does address issues related to advanced maternal age, prematurity and health issues related to prematurity. Perhaps I need to also read the original book (as some other posters have suggested). Though it seems cheap to leave information out of this book to force twin parents to buy the original book as well- we have to buy two of enough baby items!I do give the book two stars because I like his approach- sleep begets sleep and well rested babies are happier. I just wish I knew how to implement.

The follow-up Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins is a good resource to a parent of twins, offering practical advice for handling your multiples with a nice balance of confidence and humility.I had a singleton first, and we used the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book to sleep train her. (Sleep train is a harsh description as it invokes images of a screaming baby and stressed parents but this is NOT how I'd describe this method) Because I had previous experience with the Weissbluth method we had an advantage in sleep training our twins. I found while the twins' book offered some practical detail about twinfants, and dealing with common concerns related to prematurity, it lacked the detail of its predecessor, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.The Weissbluth method focuses almost entirely on the premise that rested babies sleep better. You need to toss out the age old notion that if you keep your baby up, they will sleep longer and better at night. This simply is an old wives tale not unlike putting cereal in your infant's bottle. Weissbluth focuses on preventing bad habits from starting and getting your baby down in their crib sleepy but awake and allowing them to drift off to sleep by themselves. I was skeptical at first, particularly because he says that babies can't comfortably stay awake for more than 90 minutes. BUT ITS TRUE, after 90 minutes all of my children reach a state of irritability, where they seem to want to nurse and be cuddled. With my first child I mistook this cue to mean that she was hungry. I was nursing her every 90 minutes when I should have been napping her.All in all I HIGHLY recommend the Healthy Sleep Habits method, but I suggest the parent of multiples buy the original book, Happy Child, and skip Happy Twins. It just didn't have the detail and step by step instructions like Happy Child had and I still use my Happy Child book as quick reference when one of the kids hits a funny sleeping stage.FAQ's about being a mom of multiples.- Yes, my twins shared a crib until they started moving around. They tended to snuggle close together so I had to put a barrier between them in the crib to reduce the risk of SIDS and them accidentally smothering each other.- I put them in separate cribs in the same room at 5 months.- They really do ignore each other. One does not wake the other when they cry in the middle of the night- When one wakes for a night feeding we always woke up the other one and fed them too to keep them on the same schedule.- We keep their room at about 65 degrees- We give them a bath every night before bed but instead of trying to wrangle the baby tub we bought the 2 of the spongy things and put them in the regular bath tub. It is faster and they like the water.

I liked this book but I found it didn't ever give you an actual schedule to try out and that's really what i wanted. I instead ordered 12 hours by 12 weeks even though my twins were 7 months. They cater to multiples and had them sleeping in no time with a schedule and all.

Both babies sleeping through the night since 3 months old. We read this book multiple times and took extensive notes and then referred back to them for the first couple of months. This is the #1 thing I now recommend for expectant twin parents and for expectant single parents too. I can't tell you how much this saved us!

Read this instead of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby if you are having multiples. The books on singletons do not apply to multiples!! This book explains how to schedule twins to get them and their parents the best quality sleep possible. I read both books and wish I had just gotten the Twins version only. It's also shorter, so it's more likely that my husband will read it. I wish there was a video companion to this book!

Recommended by the Pedatrician and the book was somewhat helpful but not truly comprehensive. We werr already told that the author was a proponent of "cry it out" and found that to be true. There was a helpful tip in the book about how to recognize when your babies start getting sleepy as in, what signs to look for. Overall it is a short helpful book

I want more details than put babies down “drowsy but awake.” I was hoping for details on how to actually put 2 babies down at the same time! Drowsy but awake sounds great, but in reality, individual temperament has a lot to do with the success of that. Not worth the money, to me. It also basically teaches the cry it out method, which doesn’t work for every family.

Some useful info regarding stages (but timing didn't line up with my twins.) There's no true step-by-step... The "steps" are more informational vice instructive. The troubleshooting is more about breastfeeding and potential obstacles (with no resolutions) than actual troubleshooting. It's an ok book, but is geared toward the person learning about sleep training rather than the one in the throes of it trying to figure out a method. It's as if they wrote a book and then titled the sections based on what you'd love to know vice what the sections actually contained. Blah.
