Bledsoe, who has made three trips to study Antarctica, bases her informal, chatty narrative on her thrilling adventure, bringing close the amazing science and geography as well as the gritty facts of human survival in the frigid environment (all human waste is collected and taken to the U.S. so that Antarctica does not get contaminated). The information is exciting enough without all the exclamatory punctuation, but Bledsoe's tone never seems condescending or self-important. The open book design features lots of boxes with information about the historic explorers and their daily challenges, and Bledsoe's own black-and-white photos showing wildlife close up and scientists at work will grab students across the curriculum. A detailed glossary and time line conclude. A list of further readings, especially about the history, would have been helpful, but this is still a fascinating journey to a little known and understood place. I haven't read the entire book yet, but it looks very good. I think we'll really enjoy it.

This book fills a wonderful niche for kids interested in Antarctica. Most Antarctica children's books are full of facts about Antarctica, but this one has lots of interesting facts about what it's like if you were to go to Antarctica. It's full of interesting information, and does a great job of knowing what kinds of things kids would want to know. Although written for slightly older kids, a good reader as young as 8 can enjoy it, too, thanks to the way sections are divided up.

I have Maine Coon cats and they are every bit as intelligent and loving as Mr. O'Connor describes in his story. The descriptions of Owl Cottage are also lovely and make a reader feel as if they are right there before the fireplace with a cup of tea and a cat supervising the activity in the house. Mr. 0'Connor does seem to be somewhat obsessed with these cats and his attempt to impose his will on them is disturbing to one who loves these cats also and would never try to change them. Also cats and dogs belong in the human companion's home and in a safe enclosed outside space where they are free to play and stalk each other without the danger of being hit by a vehicle. As intelligent as they are they don't understand the danger that comes from humans and/or their vehicles.People who have visited the British Isles or who would like to will love the detailed descriptions of the areas that surround the Owl Cottage.

If you have not read "Paw Tracks in the Moonlight," by the same author, I highly suggest reading it before this one. This is a continuation of the author's life, and though it can read and easily understood without "Paw Tracks in the Moonlight," I would suggest getting to know the author and his first cat, Toby Jug, before sitting down with this one.That being said, this is a very well written book by a man who knows how to paint a visual picture. Reading his work is to be in Northumberland with him; gazing at the same castles and breathing the same English air as he does. The book is divided into four parts, each in dedication to one of his cats. The cats are Pablo, Carlos, Luis, and Max. After reading it, one can feel a connection with the felines and their individual personalities, as they are so well commemorated in this story.As much as I enjoyed this book, I knew it would be hard to follow up "Paw Tracks in the Moonlight," so I kept an open mind. I did very much enjoy the book, but I could tell it was hard to capture the magic that was present in the author's first book. Perhaps because it was about four different cats as opposed to one, or perhaps because the books are about completely separate times in the author's life. One is about a single professor in the 1960's, and this one is about a retired, married man in modern society. All in all, I do suggest this book as it is a solid sequel; full of beautiful language and vivid storytelling.

Love this story. I loved his first book about Toby Jug (Paw Prints in the Moonlight) and this book continues the story years later. The way he writes and describes everything about the sounds and smells, the food and drink, and the way he is feeling really brings you right there. Between the two books he has had quite a lengthy adventure with his cats and has a compelling story to tell and tells it very well.

The sheer innocence and honest relationship within the story is lost in this book. It now comes across as more of an authority on how to train and treat the cat, especially if it does not love you or misbehave. I just could not love this book as he seems to contradict himself,, on one hand he believes in the cat retaining it`s true wild nature, letting Pablo roam free every night, yet the other two Don`t get let out for two minutes without the harness and lead. This book does not come near the beauty of the previous book when Toby Jug and him just live an honest relationship, creating the free flowing journey through the pages.

Bought this book after reading "Paw Prints in the Moonlight". I was looking for something a little different than the usual non-fiction material I read. Truly enjoyed this story, and identified with the experience as I rescued a shelter cat many years ago who was also part Maine coon. I was not aware of this at the beginning either. I shared some similar experiences with the author. The book is well written, and makes you realize the potential of a pet as friend. Highly recommended.

This is a great sequel to Denis, first book about his years with Toby Jug.This book begins some years later when Denis, who is now married, and his wife return to Owl Cottage. Before very long they have their first new cat. Others follow before very long. Denis shares many adventures and misadventures with his cats. As with his earlier book, his love of cats comes through constantly.It is obvious that Denis believes that animals have hearts and souls like us and desrve to be treated with much more compassion than they often are. How right he is.Another great book. Many happy moments but some sad ones too.

People in the UK don't seem to protect their cats and consequently they often lose their cats to cars, thieves, many sad ways. I like Denis O'Connor's way of writing, his love of and respect for the wild places and the creatures that inhabit them.

This is a wonderfully written book. But the pain of their loss tragically is almost too much to bear. We must keep our cats indoors...there is too much that can destroy their lives.........also the story about the crows dying had me in tears for days.............how cruel our world is sometimes at the hands of men..........a powerfully written story but not without much pain!!!

Emilio D'Alessandro was effectively Kubrick's personal assistant for thirty years. An Italian ex-racing driver (!), he freely admits he knows nothing about film, and, indeed, had never viewed even a single Kubrick film from beginning to end until after having worked with the man on a daily basis for decades. (Also, one very tiny quibble: the photos in the book are mostly small and rather fuzzily reproduced.)What this is, really, is a joint biography of two families, the D'Alessandros and the Kubricks. Sensitively written (with the participation of Filippo Ulivieri) the book transports you into Kubrick's working household, and a portrait of the great director built up through a thousand details of daily life and casual interactions between the director and others. There are no boardroom power meetings here, and no premiers, There is just the man. Workaholic, driven, and hugely intelligent, yes. But also anxious, kind, decent, and someone who enjoyed being constantly with his family (including a herd of beloved pets). Stanley Kubrick pulled off the near miracle of turning epic film-making into a home business. And though at times I wondered how Emelio could have dealt with all that was asked and expected of him by Kubrick without having a nervous breakdown or physical collapse (something which ultimately does nearly happen), I also found myself surprisingly moved to tears by the affection and respect these two men held for each other as so beautifully expressed in this one-of-a-kind, minutely observed book. 5 Stars, without question. From biographies to academic analyses of his films, I have read every book on Stanley Kubrick. However, this one is a true diamond in the rough as it is a touching personal document of loyalty and friendship that brings readers into Kubrick's personal sphere more than any book so far. So many books serve to perpetuate the myth behind the man; a brooding, reclusive, obsessive-compulsive control freak. And though in many ways this book reinforces those notions, what makes this book so special is that it gives us context through real life, behind-the-scenes and private moment anecdotes which end up softening the myths. Emilio was an essential cog to the Kubrick machine. A trustworthy friend and ally who Kubrick relied on for his ingenuity, strong work ethic, and frankness. Their bond was so unique and special and this book articulates that bond so well.This book is beautiful and indispensable. There is no dirt, no juicy gossip. Just a 30 year journey between two friends. I couldn't put it down.

My headline isn't referring to Kubrick, it refers instead to Emilio D'Alessandro, the guy who was the only assistant Kubrick completely trusted for the last 20 years or so of his life. Kubrick couldn't handle the unpredictability and messiness of the world outside his door, so D'Alessandro took care of that and a whole lot more for the legendary director. The author is careful to keep certain things about Kubrick confidential - and yet, you probably will learn more about the reclusive filmmaker here than anywhere else. Ultimately, a kind of love story that's absorbing, informative and very touching towards the end.

An unexpected gem. Not a "film book" for those seeking to understand Kubrick's films better, but a highly personal and often very emotional memoir by the man who worked closely with Kubrick on the daily business of running a big life and bigger productions longer than anyone else. From "A Clockwork Orange" in 1971 through "Eyes Wide Shut" to Kubrick's final days, Mr. D'Alessandro was at or near Kubrick's side, and it is clear that his friend's passing in 1999 left him bereft. Kubrick was, of course, an endlessly complex man, and this book, more than any other I've read, offers a clear-eyed look at the day-to-day form taken by that complexity. If you love Kubrick's films, you owe Mr. D'Alessandro a debt, as his quiet facilitation of Kubrick's life, his home, and his production methods made the films possible.
