JENNIFER FINNEY BOYLAN, author of fourteen books, is the inaugural Anna Quindlen Writer in Residence at Barnard College of Columbia University in the City of New York and is Special Advisor to the president of Colby College in Maine. She has been a contributor to the Op-Ed page of the New York Times since 2007; in 2013 she became Contributing Opinion Writer for the page. Jenny also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Kinsey Institute for Research on Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. She is the national co-chair of the Board of Directors of GLAAD, the media advocacy group for LGBT people worldwide, and serves as a consultant to several television series. A novelist, memoirist, and short-story writer, she is also a nationally known advocate for civil rights. Interesting story that helped me understand transgendered issues just a little better. Great to see the author make a successful transition . Apparently she has remained in her family with her wife and children. God Bless them and all who are "different" and have to struggle.

If you are considering purchase of this book, or reading this review in the first place, there is a high probability that you are transgender, a friend or family member of someone who is transgender, or an LGBTQ ally. I can sum up the importance of this book in one short sentence: "It is our story". In the details, of course it's Jenny's story, but there are so many themes in this book that reflect experiences that are common to all of us in the transgender community, that anyone who is trans or related to a trans person will see themselves reflected in these pages as in a mirror. Jenny Boylan is a professor of English at Colby College in Maine, and has published both fiction and non-fiction works. Her writing style is enjoyable, easy to read, and inclusive. You will be drawn into her story as if she were telling it at a campfire and you are being invited to pull up a camp chair and share it with her. If you are indeed trans, I suggest you have a box of tissues handy as you read. Parts of this story are so emotional that you will be crying unless you have a heart made of ice. At other points, you will be laughing, as Jenny relates stories involving some of the crazy things she has done, or witnessed while visiting her often times zany grandmother, Gammie. This book will put you on an emotional roller-coaster, so make sure your seatbelt is properly fastened, and your tray table is in the fully upright and locked position, because you are in for a sometimes sad, other times happy, but always wonderful ride. The ending of this autobiography happens in 2002, and leaves quite a few unanswered questions as to what might have happened to various people in the years between then and now. Jenny has written two sequels to "She's Not There": one that covers her childhood in greater detail, "I'm Looking Through You", and "Stuck in the Middle With You", which picks up her story after the events in "She's Not There".

i just finished this book, purchased in spite of all the reviews that mentioned how poor 'Grace' was underrepresented. actually, i bought it in part because of those.i enjoyed the book, and i might have learned a few things. i enjoyed the writing, and the description of what it is like to be this particular 'other'. the author and her bestie discuss what identity is in terms of choosing who to present as. but my experience has been more like discovering what i am - not who. self is known; the details are murky. i appreciate fine writing that shows the struggle, the confusion, the weirdness of it all in a society that is very very sure that identity is static, and of course is very very wrong.as for the attitude / altitude in the book, i have that optimism as well. it stays there, enhancing my emotional baseline, always. i'm not trans, but i am a lesbian, and my husband left me for a straight woman, and .... i had stayed, for years. i would have stayed forever [ even now, 9 years later]. so i understand jenny's staying part, and maybe a small part of a possible not staying part, and perhaps some of 'grace's staying part, and a lot of the 'buoyancy' part.it seems very clear that 'grace' and jenny have a really good marriage, a close, positive marriage, and so it's not surprising that she acted as she did. she suffered, she lived, she managed; what most of us do in our dramas, large and small. she was inclined that way. i do believe that women tend to stay, while men leave, for very complex reasons. while i appreciated her words, i'm sad that 'grace' felt she should write her response because of all the shouting and 'not fair's ostensibly on her behalf.trans and the rest of the queer rainbow have never, ever been all that weird to me. i am just lucky, that way, i guess. i never struggled with that part of my identity, but it is obvious that some people do. but the weirdest thing to me is that strangers struggle - and argue with - someone else's identity. and i don't mean when someone is in the closet. i mean a stated, struggled for identity, and here are friends, family, colleagues, etc., proclaiming that it's not so because they don't believe it or haven't felt it, or whatever denial mechanism they feel they need. i don't believe in jesus, but it's abundantly clear that many people do, why argue? but i guess that's what makes this a book, and not a moment.it's a well-written book. i like how it dances thru time, i like the buoyancy. i like the afterword by jenny's friend. i love how it all comes together.

I read this book when I was employed full time as a counselor; now, over a decade later, I still give this gook to friends who want to learn more about transpeople. I know of no other Memoir which is so compelling that you would read it in a single sitting if you could---except maybe Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes." In fact, there are similarities between the two styles: great humor (including the ability to laugh at oneself) which does not preclude the writers' abilities to document great sorrows, timeliness---the sense of emerging in a culture not primed to understand some of the issues, and just good writing. The book sings. Especially poignant is the chapter about a faculty exchange with University College Cork when all the pub songs about emigration resonated: leaving a place you know, leaving your sweetheart, headed for a destination one hopes will somehow be better, anticipation, soft terror. This book was a landmark for the trans community and it ought to be heralded for the human community as we are all in this business of loving and living together. And Richard Russo's Afterward is a bonus.

I really, really like this little book. It's packed with great info for the novice canner. I am particularly concerned at the shelf life of any foods I try to preserve, and Sara Elliot Price offers sound tips and advice on the topic of bacteria and unwanted critters that can potentially be part of that preserving process. The book is only 45 pages from start to finish, but the tips for success are practical and will be my go to reference guide as long as I am trying to achieve successful canning. Thank you, Ms. Price, for such a delightful and useful little book. :)

I've always thought that canning and preserving food is a very complicated process. I wanted to try my hand at canning and preserving food when I got this book. For a beginner like myself and after reading this book, I found it surprisingly easy to start my project. The book included all the types of equipment that you would need, practical tips on canning, it even includes a lot of information regarding the possibility toxin contamination if the food aren't prepared well and tips on how to avoid them. For my first project, I'll try the recipes included in the book as they are so easy to follow. A great book.

I always thought that canning my own foods sounded like a good idea but disregarded it, lumping it into the 'too hard' basket. Boy, was I wrong. This book shows you the step by step process which in the end, isn't that hard after all. The book is full of practical tips and suggestions that covered most, if not all of my questions. There's also a bunch of great recipes to get you started. My camping trips will be all the better for it :) Great read!

ISBN 978-1-55591-642-8).A little background for those of you who are unfamiliar with "decolonization". Anthropologically speaking, decolonization refers to the effort to systematically remove all forms of the invasive and pernicious effects of colonization upon indigenous peoples. Further, decolonization includes developing ones ability to understand and discuss non-European cultures from an unbiased and non-Western perspective. In other words, decolonization finally offers "voice" to the First Nations of the Americas. Native American nations have experienced 500 years of the destructive affects of Euro-American colonization upon their bodies, minds, spirits, souls and psyches. Decolonization thinking attempts to un-do or at least seriously address this destruction. There is a growing body of research and writings which contribute to such decolonization thinking, including "Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery".For those unfamiliar with it, decolonization literature can seem frightening or "radical" because it tells history's tales and approaches the truth of existence from completely different perspectives than those with which the mainstream is familiar. In the case of the North American continent, the tales are told (and assumes that the world works) from an indigenous worldview, NOT a Euro-American one. Euro-American critics of decolonization bandy about terms like "revisionist history". The truth is: when anyone is confronted by a body of knowledge radically different than what they've always heard/been taught/accepted "fright-flight" pretty much takes over. Humans fear and condemn what we do not know and recognize. Each of us have deep-seated views and ideas about how the world works, what our place is in it. We hearse and rehearse our stories and know them by heart. When something or someone comes along that attempts to change or add too our story, our experience, what works for us, we (naturally) become uncomfortable (in the old vernacular: it can "pull the rug out from beneath us"). The process of decolonization can have that affect. Euro-American Christians coming to North America during the so-called "Age of Discovery" see themselves (as they have throughout their history) as the new "chosen people" with a divine mandate to take over this new "promised land", exploiting its resources (per the Genesis command to subdue the earth) while disposing of the heathens dwelling therein.Using cognitive theory (particularly "idealized cognitive models" or ICMs) as a tool for decolonization thinking, the author takes readers through a detailed examination of the 1823 Supreme Court ruling "Johnson [& Graham's Lessee] v. M'Intosh" - which the author asserts is "the cornerstone" of the use of "the dominating mentality of Christendom against Indian nations and peoples in U.S. law". Successive chapters aptly titled and smoothly progressing from one premise to the next (The Conqueror Model, Colonizing the Promised Land, the Chosen People-Promised Land Model, the Dominating Mentality of Christendom, Converting Christian Discovery into Heathen Conquest, the Mental Process of Negation, and Christian Nations Theory: Hidden in Plain Sight) slowly build the authors compelling case.Now that you know what "Pagans in the Promised Land" is about (it's core idea, if you will) let me tell you what it ISN'T about. First, it isn't about your comfort level as a reader; you will be challenged about some basic assumptions - that is, if you LET yourself be challenged. Second, this book isn't a chronological history of the "age of discovery". It's a "there is no spoon" journey of revelation, and a "turn-history-upside-down-and-shake-and-see-what-falls-out-of-its-pockets" primer. Third, "Pagans in the Promised Land" isn't a history book or an anthropological treatise. It's really more of a psychology/sociology study. Although it's application is in the field of law, you do not need a legal degree to understand the text. And fourth, regardless of what you may think by its title, this book also isn't a primer for Christians on the most effective means of evangelizing indigenous populations. Its a wake-up call - an indictment of a "Christianity" whose rigid legalisms and centrisms not only allow for but even appear to leave room for the enjoyment of the oppression of certain groups of human beings. This is the kind of "Christianity" the author of "Pagans in the Promised Land" is referring to throughout the book - the kind of Christianity with which the vast majority of First Nations people have been exposed to, inundated by, and destroyed by in the 500 years since first contact with "Christian" European nations. Perhaps if the "Christians" who came to a "new world" had been more devoted to following the teachings and moral example of Christ than in establishing themselves as the new "chosen people" in a new "promised land" by subjugating the "heathens" they found there, history would be very very different.And now for a few parting thoughts about this book, on a personal level. I read "Pagans in the Promised Land" because I wanted to know more about the whole "doctrine of discovery"/"manifest destiny" thing - especially as it plays out in the field of law. I'm no slouch when it comes to historical study (it would be difficult to "pull the wool over my eyes"). But this book left me shaking my head and blinking to get the wool out as I realized that somewhere along the line an awful lot of "Christians" have been lulled into an alarming sense of "rightness by divine right"...and it plays out on every stage of life: social, mental, theological, etc. This in turn has given me as a United Methodist pastor, a profound distaste for ever using the argument "God told me to ____", and a newfound respect for the deep humility that MUST be central to a pastor's life.I found the core arguments of "Pagans in the Promised Land" extremely compelling. This is not a lengthy book (approximately 150 pages of text and 40 pages of footnotes and bibliographies - a solid thesis), but I found it necessary to put it down periodically in order to reflect on what I'd read.Who should read this book? Students of history, culture and race relations; folks concerned with social justice issues; those with an interest in legal theory. And ultimately, if it were up to me, I'd like every "Christian" to read it - really read it and engage with it and with others over it. It would provoke some excellent discussion in seminaries and churches, I think. If after considering these comments you decide to read this book, please do so with an open mind. Thank you.

Disappointed in the amount of outdated info-- no fault of the book/author, as it was published in 2011. I usually love the Lonely Planet books, but SO many reviews raved about this one over LP, so I decided to go with the people's choice- oops. That would be my fault, bummer!CONS: Outdated for 2018! In looking up some of the recommended spots, I've already found 5 that have since closed :( Not helpful when planning a trip! I found the book also harder to follow than other guides I've used. The maps are not thorough in covering the spots the book mentions and the layout is odd. I found myself flipping pages back and forth not finding what the book mentioned. I don't love how the color section is very small and the rest of the book in B&W.PROS: Historical info was very interesting (and obviously not outdated!) and photos got me very excited for my upcoming trip!However, cannot recommend in 2018. Back to Lonely Planet and TripAdviser I go!

Another fine quality offering from Moon publications..it has the same "flavor" as their other travel books. Has a great deal of very useful information on the Islands. The 7th edition was published in 2/2011...it would be nice to have another update on this book. (Most travel books on Tahiti are as old or older).

Very handy handbook for our trip to Moorea and Bora Bora. I read up on the two islands before I got there and also used it while I was there on vacation. It was helpful for us many times for good food tips on places to eat and good sight seeing tips. We are very busy people that love to explore and there are lots of things to see and do on these islands.

I have been to Tahiti and bought this book so I can great information when I return. Very detailed, pictures and mentions of many, many things to do once there. Even has the Aranui ship that travels to the Marquesas Islands. It details all the islands nearby Tahiti that you can travel to, routes to get there(either by plane or boat--if possible), when to go, what to do/see. All in all a great travel book.

I recently took a trip to Tahiti, Bora Bora and French Polynesia. I bought this book as well as Lonely Planet's Tahiti & French Polynesia. I've always had good luck with the Lonely Planet books, but this time the Moon handbook was much better. There was more information provided and the information was a lot better. If you're in debate about which one to pick out of these two, grab the Moon Tahiti book. It's better and you don't need both books.

I bought this book for a cruise we recently took to French Polynesia and was very impressed with just about everything. A warning to those who visit Nuka Hiva - which is a most delightful small island - if you do the hike to Anaho Bay for the great snorkeling. From the beach to where it is deep enough to snorkel is about 150' and you are walking on coral with lots of sea urchins. The hike is somewhat strenuous but it is not difficult.It is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and there are very few residents.

This is a detailed guide to Tahiti and French Polynesia. We used it for an introduction to traveling by air to Tahiti, but mostly for in depth information on the island of Mo'orea where a conference was held. As with many Moon guides, this one was great on inexpensive food ideas and places to stay as these are aimed at the international student audience. They work well for any independent traveler and are now popular with seniors and the budget-conscious in general. They also offer background and historic and cultural sections that can make any trip more interesting. Many less-visited islands are covered in addition to the most popular touristic spots.

i own all of Vance's sci fi novels, and probably a dozen GURPS game books. This one was a great read - as always with GURPS you have to wonder how often the gamebooks turn into actual games, but with this one I will say that if i ever get the opportunity to play it i will jump at the chance. The one caveat is that per Vance's request as a concession to the limeys the name "Wankh" became the "Wannek" in this game book, which is a little strange to a longtime reader of the original yankee version of the novels but easily ignored. Otherwise the game book is true to the novels, and provides a wonderful gazetteer of Tschai. The adventure ideas are good, and the game play is typical GURPS (which is to say, fairly easy to understand and seems easy to play - but the book is worth a buy/read even if you never play it). All in all a great read for any fan of the novels. EDIT: So years after I bought this, I have to say that it has really great artwork too. I can't read the novels without imagining the alien races looking exactly like they are depicted in this book, and I find myself pulling it out all the time when I start thinking about the Pnume, etc. If anyone ever plays it, please invite me! :-)
