Turtle- David Bushnell's Revolutionary VesselThis book is a wonderful history of the development of the first practical attempt to use a submarine for a military attack during the American Revolution.I was drawn to read this book because of my interest in American history and because of my interest in the history of southeastern Connecticut in particular. Although I do not live in that area, I have been there numerous times. I have a good knowledge of the area history but only previously had a general knowledge of Bushnell's work on the Turtle.The two authors are very familiar with the area around Old Saybrook, the scene of most of the book. One is a retired commanding diving officer, the other a high school technical teacher. They, bring a wealth of knowledge and research to this task. Not only did they want to know all about the Turtle but to construct an exact replica. They describe in detail their historical research and bring their vast technical expertise to the project. They made great efforts to view the details as they would have been assessed during the Revolution.This book will be enjoyed by readers interested in Revolutionary War history, submarines, naval history, and students of mechanical technology. Of course it will also be appreciated by those interested in the history of southeastern Connecticut.

The full story of David Bushnell's Turtle, the legendary submersible that made three failed attempts to sink British ships. Encouraged by Benjamin Franklin and George Washington during he period when the British were renetering the colonies through New York island, Bushnell's sub made it's attack. The authors examine the origins of the processes Bushnell used in construction, reconstruct the actual attack from the little documentation, speculates on why the attack failed, and details the efforts by a modern group including a high school class to build an operable replica of the Turtle. Great book for those interested in this early effort, decades even before the Hunley succeeded in its attck on a federal blockade ship in Charleston harbor.

Roy Manstan and Frederic Frese's "Turtle: David Bushnell's Revolutionary Vessel" is a dual story. First, it is a detailed history of the development and employment of the first vessel ever built as a military submarine to attack enemy shipping. Although the American Revolution's Turtle ultimately failed to sink a single British ship, the curious craft itself was a substantial success, a practical submersible vessel that indeed carried out underwater attacks. The authors to a considerable extent function as tehnological detectives, seeking to understand how the Turtle was designed and constructed, within limits imposed by the contemporary state of the art. Intertwined with the historical story is a technical study of a modern relica of the Turtle, built largely by high school students under the authors' direction and tested to rigorouos standards. At times, the technical aspects of reporting the Turtle's performance perhaps impedes the overall flow of the book, although the authors' experiences are not told without a little leavening humor. Of particular value are several first-hand primary accounts reproduced as appendices.

What makes this book different is a very academic and experimental approach taken by the participants, first in researching the history and then in actually constructing a working replica. The book documents how they first looked at all the available primary sources and also researched what the original authors would have meant by using particular words and phrases by using dictionaries and other technical sources of that time period to which Bushnell would have been familiar with.The book then documents how the team designed the replica to be as representative as possible of the original, including how it would be operated and employed. Building of the replica was next, then they tested it and assessed the results. Finally the book describes the actual sorties of the Turtle based upon the primary sources and what the team found to be the likely performance abilities and limits.Overall a most interesting and informative book. I am very happy with this book. I was looking for something fresh and stimulating and I found it. As a boy I read about the Turtle, but was never able to find much information. That would be because there has never been much information available until now. The author starts by relating what information was in print at the time of the American Revolution on submarines, and from there makes an excellent case for how the Turtle was built based on known technology of the time. I've seen many artist's conceptions over the years, and all of them show a barrel shaped craft with helical screw propellers. The authors state their case for how these misconceptions are not logical or even possible. The building of their own Turtle gives you the feeling that they have produced a craft that Bushnell would certainly recognize as his own design. I have come away from this book with the feeling that I finally understand that the Turtle fully deserves the place that it holds in world history for being the first fighting craft of its kind.

First of all, you can look through the features implemented, which are generally progressive in terms of complexity and implementation, and go straight to the topic that interests you the most.I would caution you that this shouldn't be a first book on language implementation. I couldn't enumerate off hand, all of the documents that I've read on the topic - including quite a few that were Lisp specific - and I'd rank this one pretty in terms of difficulty. But the great thing is that the author is methodical about incrementally introducing and explaining the features. That still requires a lot of rumination from me to build the necessary framework inside of my skull.

This book is excellent. It is clear but not superficial at all.Queinnec explains from the basics of Lisp implementation (evaluation of S-expressions) to techniques for compiling into C. You will find very good advice on how to implement macros, continuations and higher-order functions. If you want to implement Lisp, Scheme or any other language actually, buy this book!Besides being an excellent technical text, the book is also a great pleasure to read, because of Queinnec's writing style.Also, there are exercises -- with answers! :-)

This book is right up there with SICP and LoL. If you are serious about understanding how Lisp works and why it works that way then this book is one of the best.

Pretty much the only book on how to write a Lisp / Scheme VM - saves months of trolling through online boards...

I don't have much experience with LISP and Scheme, butI enjoy reading that book because the author gives a deepinsight into the inner workings and structure of compilers/interpreters for the whole family of LISP languages and beyond.It's a hard read (at least for me) - mostly because it containstoo much information and you need to follow the code sectionson almost every page (written in Scheme), but it deserves everyhour you'll dedicate to reading it.

This book is fantastic for filling the gap between a SICP-level understanding of how to write a Scheme (or LISP) compiler and actually getting the full language together. You know all of those "almost full R5RS" Scheme-to-{Java,.NET,JS} compilers? This book would help those authors fill in the last few pieces and actually implement the whole language.Where this book falls short is as it approaches final code generation --- after you've generated the first working intermediate representation and want to start producing code you'd actually want to compiler. I recommend Appel's first book (Compiling with Continuations) for some tips on the basic optimization phases required in a functional compiler.

I never read books quickly, but I read this over two days. I have always felt something for Marilyn- love, understanding, and respect.This book ends abruptly and I feel it is incomplete. Much like her own life, ending too soon. I am not disappointed as I know she shows parts of herself that she wants us to see and the dozens of biographers since her death have filled in the rest for us.What makes this special is that it is her own words. Her own musings on life, love, and men and women in general.Regardless of whether you have read other bios or not, this is an excellent read for any Marilyn fan, and the photos are worth their weight in gold.

Newly interested in the person that was Marilyn Monroe (as opposed to her work), I figured I'd start with the subject herself as she saw herself. Part justification, part autobiography, this is an unfinished work that ends abruptly just as Monroe is about to entertain the troops in Korea. There are sections that read like a savvy but not particularly reflective young actor/star, trying to save or justify her career and there are sections that seem too articulate and self aware, and almost prescient, which ring untrue and make the work feel as though it's been tampered with.Compelling but incomplete, with sections that feel fabricated by someone other than the author.

I read Marilyn's story as a teenager. It was a wonderful little book and an essential for every fan of Marilyn. I thought I was getting that book, the one heavy on story with a few personal photos included. I was mistaken. This one is oversized and has been "updated" to include a ton of photos. While it isn't a bad thing to have photos of Marilyn, this "update" has ruined the feel of the book for me. I just wanted her memoir, the story she sat down and wrote with Ben Hecht. Instead I got Hollywood.

This is definitely a great book especially with the never before seen photos. It’s great reading about Marilyn in her own words especially being such a fan of hers.

Very nice coffee table type book with some nice quality photos, but at only 185 pages (large type) including many photos, the story is very lightweight and ends abruptly on honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio.The writing sounds like Marilyn talking and shows that she was more intelligent than most in Hollywood, but also shows that she had a lot of problems relating to most people (except children), whether rich or poor, male or female, and had a real inferiority complex because of her childhood and lack of competent parenting (that she obsessed into huge permanent emotional scars). On one hand she was totally confused as to why she was considered a sex symbol, when she didn't have any sex drive. On the other hand, she was as comfortable nude as she was dressed, and she knew exactly why men chased her when she wore tight clothes (she preferred wearing as tight as possible, some sewn to her body). Seemingly, her only ambition was to be a star, yet she didn't respect movie stars, and she was increasingly immobilized with stage fright, which in turn increased her medications.Marilyn could get very few female friends because of jealousy and the married males were afraid of their wives, she avoided single males on her own, so she was very lonely. She does show that Hollywood was so completely screwed up in those days that the studios originally thought she was 'not photogenic' and it took the public to demand more of her presence in the movies (she claims to have refused the 'casting couch'.I see a lot of reviews that think that these are not her words, it can never be proven, but I believe they are completely wrong. I don't believe Ben Hecht would even consider editing her words, and Ben had too good a reputation for anybody to change his writings. I would have appreciated more photos for this type book (there has to be millions more photos available), and I wouldn't recommend this book for a first purchase (see Anthony Summers 1984 Goddess).The recent movie `My Week With Marilyn' is taken from a diary written during filming of `Prince and Showgirl' is excellent. The `Premiere Collection' is 17 DVD's of 17 of Marilyn's movies, very reasonably priced (some of early movies have very little of Marilyn, however, and collection is missing a couple of must-have movies). `Marilyn Monroe Metamorphosis' by Wills & Schmidt is a better and larger collection of glossy photos than this volume, along with some interviews of her by news people (this is a larger coffee table type book of almost 300 pages).

Heart-breaking in its honesty, child-like wisdom, and openness. I have loved Marilyn for decades, yet this book made me feel I knew her for the first time. If you want to see the inner Marilyn, this book, is a must-read.

I bought a bunch of these books for my nephew's sixth birthday. He loves them! He loves it more when I read them with him because we watched the show together so I can pronounce the names correctly.The stories are more or less based on the series and are super fun to read! He's learning his sight words and gets so excited when he picks them out!

What little boy and possibly little girl does not like a another super hero to read about these days. My 4 year old loves it. Need I say more.

Bought for our 10 year old grandson who is a Lego-Ninjago nut. A good addition to his collection. He loves to show me all of the characters and tell me about their personalities and abilities -- even if I can't ever keep them straight.

My 5 year old devoured this. He loves this collection. Easy and entertaining read!

if you are looking to get your little boy into reading - these are great! Reading level is around middle/end first grade ( reading alone) - about half the page is text in large print - the rest pictures- there are some more complicated words to decode but most can be read alone. There are few books on the market that are geared towards boys in this reading level ( for those that are not quite ready for chapter books but beyond the 2 sentence a page beginner readers). These contain small chapters only a few pages long.My own son loves them and begs for more reading time in the evenings- we have the entire series and once we make it all the way through we will be ready to step up to the chapter book series.

I have posted similar reviews for other of this series,...The Explode the Code series is great. I have four children and they all seem to enjoy working through this series. I am seeing a benefit in their reading, spelling and writing skills. My kids regularly laugh and share with each other the funny little mistakes and stories from this series as they complete assignments.To be honest, any phonics program that my kids will do happily each day for YEARS without crying, complaining or whining is a major winner.I am finding that if I start the kids in book 1 in first grade, and take our time, that we come to this book near the beginning of third grade. These are a great independent learning tool.

I use this series for both of my kids (6 & 8). Sadly it stops at EtC 8, but we have been very happy with the process the series takes the kids through. My daughter has dyslexia and it was a bit rough in the beginning, but have seen great strides as we are now n EtC 2.5. There are 1/2 books between the main books to help with transitions if necessary. My son didn't need them, but my daughter did. Great to have the choice so there is no unnecessary boredom or if needing an extra stepping stone.

Explode the Code is a wonderful series of phonics books that supplement your child's reading. I have been homeschooling my kids with them for 3 years now. The lessons are simple and fun. The kids really get a kick out of the funny pictures and silly sentences. This is one curriculum your kids won't moan and groan over doing. And the price can't be beat!

There is nothing better or simpler for teaching phonics! If you have a tactile kinesthetic learner, you may want to add some other things like phonics tiles or magnetic letters, even flashcards. I have used other methods. Frontline Phonics and Explode the Code are the best, in my opinion, for homeschoolers.

Absolute waste of money. I initially bought this book due to 'raving' reviews (mainly across the pond in the US) and I had better expectations for them. once I actually received the books I was bitterly disappointed. As a home schooling mother who teaches Language, I would advise anyone to invest their time and money on the Apples and Pears books by Sound foundations. Its a UK company, and books can be purchased on-line.

Great remedial program. Wish all schools taught phonics lessons

This was new as advertised and quick shipping.

I recommend this book to any homeschooling family. This book teaches vocabulary and spelling without the children even realizing it. My second grader truly loves it and rather do it first thing in the morning above all else. Buy it!
