I was first introduced to Mr Irwin's books when I purchased and read his book on the life of Alex Stuart. I was raised in Roane County and am familiar with many of the ways that he chronicled in that book. With this book on Appalation Musical instruments I was somewhat skeptical because most of the accounts that I have read were by folks who have no knowledge of mountain folks but I was very pleased with this account because it became evident that Mr. Irwin knew how those raised in Appalatia think and what their values are. The most stunning page in the book is entitled "The Mail Order Guitar" and it brought memories flooding back that had long been submerged. It is a picture of a family gathered around a "stick and waddle" fireplace which is roaring away. It is a "tar paper" cabin meaning that the "wall paper" was "tar paper" or what is now known as roofing felt and most folks I grew up with lived in just such dwellings. There was no insulation in the walls and the "tar paper" was used to keep the cold wind and rain from coming inside. You can immediately tell just what they placed value on: there was only one chair (for dad). Family pictures on the walls. Family gathered round the fire and Momma playing their new acquired Mail Order Guitar as she probably did every night. It is all about family - something lost in our fast, self-centered world. We would do well to return there. This book is "food for the soul".

More, more I want more! I could peruse this type of book endlessly, both for the instruments and the history. Fun to have on the coffee table!

I can't put into words adequately how much I owe John W. Robinson and now his co-authors for the joy he and they helped me find in the wildernesses of Southern California. I lived away from Southern California for many years and now am back. Naturally, I checked out these two beloved classics, *Trails of the Angeles* and *San Bernardino Mountain Trails*, to see if they'd been updated. Yes, they have been, and they've been given new, sturdier maps! How I look forward to renewing my love of both ranges again with Robinson & Co.'s help! *Trails of the Angeles* covers many of my favorite dayhikes, especially Mt. Lowe and Mt. Baden-Powell. *San Bernardino Mountain Trails* took me on many backpacks with friends plus my first solo backpacks, and the book covers my favorite Southern California wildernesses, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto. You can't go wrong with these two gems. See you on the trail! (I'll append this review to *San Bernardino Mountain Trails*, too.)

This is probably the most thorough and well written hiking guide for the San Gabriel Mountains that you'll find. I can't compare this 9th edition with the previous versions as I don't have any of the previous editions, however, I can tell you that this book is rock solid. Although the author John W. Robinson is retired, he has turned over the reins to Dough Christiansen to keep the content updated and accurate. And the transition is seamless.Unlike some hiking guides that give you overview information about the hikes, John W. Robinson (and Doug Christiansen) get into the nitty gritty useful hike details without going overboard. And based on the hikes I'm familiar with, the hike descriptions are very accurate.Sure they might forget a detail here and there. Like forgetting to mention the famous "Echo Phone" at the top of Echo Mountain that everyone takes their picture with and shouts through. A curious omission for sure, but certainly not anything that would affect the quality of your hike.But the authors DO provide the key information that you need to know. For example, I did a pre-hike to Big Horn Mine for an upcoming group hike and found all the hike details spot on. Even down to trail details like, "The old wagon road is an easy walk except for a washout near the halfway point that may trouble beginners and young hikers."Along with the very thorough coverage of the hikes, TRAILS OF THE ANGELES also provides a lot of background information and history. Granted, some hikers may find this unnecessary and even consider it fluff, but I find it very useful, informative and enjoyable. All in all, this is superb hiking book. Along with Afoot and Afield: Inland Empire: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide and San Bernardino Mountain Trails: 100 Hikes in Southern California, this book will be a valuable resource for many years to come.

I've this book and John Robinson's guide to the San Bernardino Mountains since 1980. To me they are the easiest to use, have the most information, and best directions to the trail head of any book I have (which are quite a few). The 8th edition had some new hikes in it that are not in earlier editions because access has been closed to hikers by the land owners. The new map is much clearer and sturdier (waterproof) than earlier editions. Extra copies of the map can also be purchased separate from the book if needed/desired. This book is a classic and the hikes it lists cover and area from just west of the 14 freeway to the western edge of the San Bernardino National Forest. With this book and his guide to the San Bernardino Mountains, you have a list of 200 hikes that cover everything from desert to alpine wilderness hikes, covering an area from the 14 freeway to Anza Borrego State Park.The book has a chart listing the hikes and their rating in the back of the book. This is handy so you don't have to flip through the book looking for 'easy' hikes if you're going with someone who is in the best of shape. The only thing I wish the chart had info on the time of year to hike the trail. Even easy hikes on the front range of the San Gabriel's can be miserable mid-summer.

As someone who has entered his second half-century of life, I can remember as a youngster the impact of Richard Scarry books. Even when I had outgrown the simple language in his books and was reading more sophisticated fare, the whimsical pictures and busy events depicted in the books were still a source of joy.Which is why it's surprising that a lot of parents today have not heard of Scarry.That's a shame, because his books have a wonderfully engrossing quality that draws in children like few other books on the market today. Scarry's anthropomorphic animal kingdom is filled with crazy happenings and near disasters as its characters navigate their world. The illustrations contain an attention to detail that undoubtedly served as an inspiration for the "Where's Waldo" books, as little events occur in hidden places and drive curiosity and exploration of the pictures and text.This "Best Word Book Ever" is a large format book that helps beginning readers attach words to images. In this, it's exemplary, and will keep youngsters reading for hours. The simple item labels occur within a context that helps children understand how words and what they describe fit together. It's simple, yet brilliant, stuff.The best recommendation I can give: This book belongs in every household with young children. It's so good, it may be one of those that gets handed down from one generation to next. I know, because that's what I did, passing down this book that I loved as a child to my own son. And I just gave a copy to my young nephew this past Christmas.Truly essential.

Thirty-eight years ago my sister-in-law sent me the copy of this book that she had used with her children. I recently sent one to my daughter for her new baby. Because it is mostly pictures featuring sweetly drawn animals doing all the daily chores and jobs of people, it's easy to adapt the language that you, the reader, uses to tell the stories to a child so that the book grows along with the child. My daughter continued to love this book until she was about 4 years old and long after she had become the teller of the stories as we "read" the book together. It's great for providing material for interaction on many subjects ranging from hygiene to careers and for broad vocabulary building. It is not, however, racially or ethnically diverse or gender neutral. Even thought the characters are a wide array of animals, they seem oddly white and there is a definite sense that "girl bunnies, boy bunnies" do certain things, but with the right narration it works. Otherwise, it's just plain sweet and fun!

This is a nice book for labeling and commenting! I love how big this book is. I also like that it has the words above the items, so kids can start to pair the letters to the pictures. This book, as well as the others by Richard Scarry, are a great item to have to facilitate language!

This is such a cute little book. It's a little smaller than I thought it was going to be, but my 1-year old loves the size! It's like it was made for her little hands. The book does not contain a story to read, but instead shows one (or more) cars or trucks for each letter of the alphabet, for example A shows an ambulance and a car shaped like an apple, B shows a car shaped like a banana, and so on. My 3-year old is just starting to learn the ABC, and she enjoys looking at the pictures, and guessing what each vehicle is called. A fun little book, and a great way to introduce little ones to the world of Richard Scarry!

I simply adore the Richard Scarry books and am so excited to finally share my childhood favorites with my own little ones. I remembered pouring over this book for hours on extended car trips, studying the pages, as they're filled with SOO much detail in the pictures. The illustrator did a fabulous job of incorporating every day items that you wouldn't think to teach the names of to little kids. This is a great picture dictionary for toddlers and younger children who are still exploring the world and want to know what everything they encounter is! Even though this book is a bit dated to today's standards and the things we use (cell phones, ipads, laptops, etc.) there are still so many basic items that they will learn from this book. I was thrilled to see Amazon carries this when my childhood copy seemed to disappear. Definitely recommend this book to anyone with kids, or nieces/nehphews/grandkids etc that they would like to treat :)

This book is so much fun! Not only are there the standard cars like "mail truck" and "newspaper truck," there are also imaginative ones like "pickle car, pencil car and don't forget the pumpkin car!" I don't know if it's exactly a poem, but there is a lovely rhythm to the words that just makes it a joy to read. The shape of the book is fun, too--and it's nice and light, small enough for younger babies to hold. Even better than other small board books. I didn't know what to expect when I bought it, and have enjoyed it more than anticipated.

Our toddler loves the book. It's a great learning tool for animal, object,and vehicle words. The nostalgia factor and games we play with the illustrations make it possible for we parents to read the book, again and again, without going completely crazy. The thick pages make turning easier for little hands. Why four stars? In fair comparison with other "well-loved" books, the binding strength is less than ideal. I've noticed on more than one example that the cover tends to fall off with a page or two. Oh well. We made "amateur book repair" a parent-child activity. I still recommend the book.

My daughter just texted me to tell me that this book is my 2 1/2-yr-old grandson's favorite. She tells me that they were at the park on a beautiful, sunny day and she pulled this Scarry book out of one of the bags to get at something else. When my grandson spotted it, she realized she had made a grave mistake. It was "like WW III" to try to get him to part with it so they could go for a walk! He loves its small size and having it read to him and he likes the whimsical illustrations too. I'm not really surprised. She was a Scarry fan too when she was little!

I love that it doesn't have a glossy finish. No more ink smears!

Cute design - but the January page has a misspelled quote! "Not all who wonder are lost" - supposed to be "Not all who wander"

March has a misprint - the date 23 was printed where there should have been 25.

The quotes on the calendar are not the true quotes. It does function as a calendar.

I like it but I did notice that for the month of March they went from the 24th to the 23rd and then back to the 26th. They aren't so good on the proof reading.

I still to this day remember that moment and the feelings it brought to me so vividly. I love that baby with every single ounce of love a human being has inside of them. The other day he grabbed a ball and put it through his play hoop he has at their house.This book is like if you took those moments from above and sprinkled them on top of a bean and cheese taco from Jalisco's in S Houston.It's Perfect.Buy it once.Then buy it again.

In fact, you don't even have to read it because the illustration by Arturo Torres is essentially a traveling art museum of fantastic and hilarious work. However, I recommend reading it because sometimes laughing so hard that you cry is the best thing you can do. Shea is the wordsmith of our generation, your generation and future generations. If you don't buy this book and read it immediately, we can not be friends. BUY THIS BOOK IT WILL BE THE BEST DECISION YOU HAVE EVER MADE.

As someone who loves the NBA but didn't come online until the late 90's, this book was wildly entertaining and informative. Hilarious character dynamics make the NBA the most entertaining league in the world, and Shea does a great job of weaving these hilarious stories into his 25 questions about the NBA. For example, there is a brief, hilarious retelling of how Celtics GM, Danny Ainge, "rocketed the ball 100 miles an hour" into Mario Elie's face during the 1994 WCF. This is then followed by a Zach Lowe story where Ainge admits to eating Chipotle seven days a week.Some of the 3-part chapters are an admitted slog, especially if you didn't grow up in the eras he is talking about, but the format allows you to skip it if you REALLY can't bear to read the 10 pages they span.

I work in publishing and I can confirm that Shea is one of the most important contemporary authors of our time. In a world of darkness and hate, he is a beacon of positivity, humor, and goodwill to all men (especially LaMarcus Aldridge who is vastly underpaid).
