A very helpful and practical book for doing fundraising! Having been a ministry fundraiser for the past 15 years, I read this book both when I started and again last month to refresh myself on the basics. I liked it even more the second time!My one critique (which is not Morton's fault) is that it's feeling outdated in the realm of practicals. As long as you can translate some of the ideas into a modern-day context (like how to use social media, texting, MailChimp, etc.), it's a really great resource.And has often been said of this book, the Bible study in the Appendix is worth every penny!
I recommend this book to anyone looking to grow spiritually in the area of funding in today's church. If you are starting you own faith based program, I also recommend you reading this book. The writing of the book gives very detailed views on how to can reach goals of being fully funded to compete the work they are call to do. Each chapter hits on topic that need to be cover by many people entering the mission field and needing to get an understand on how to fund your ministry. I enjoyed the the step by step process details given. I have been in church all of my like, and this book helped my gain an understanding on how to approach the topic of money scripturally and spiritually. I would have liked a more modern outlook. Overall this was a fine read.
As someone who is embarking on full-time missions, I have to raise funds. I needed the author's perspective on how embarrassed or ashamed we seem to be when we ask for support. It is an honorable thing to support missions and missionaries which is something to be kept in mind when requesting support. I didn't give it a 5 star rating only because the author raised his funds in the US for a US mission, and, therefore, some of the book was affected by a different attitude than those of us who will be in other countries. A very practical and useful tool with excellent examples and suggestions about who to approach and how to approach them.
I got this book at the recommendation of a friend (thanks Rob) to learn about ways to fund a new ministry I've begun ([...]) - the help Scott Morton provides from his experience is great, and very practical. But more importantly, he shows how fund-raising is biblical as well. It helped me greatly to get my head on straight regarding who provides the funds for ministry - GOD... He just uses people. Our fund-raising efforts are invitations to people to join God in His work through the ministries to which we are called. Great book. Can't say it enough. Very helpful.
Scott Morton & Bill Dillon say essentially the same thing but in different ways. The cartoons in Scott's book help to impress his points on our minds. I set aside my autographed copy to load it on the Kindle so I can read during waiting times...the Kindle fits my purse but the big book doesn't.The chapter on "how to write newsletters people actually read" has been required reading for our staff in the Philippines and I refer back to it almost every time I start a newsletter! Great, helpful, stuff!
We bought this book from a recommendation from some missionary friends of ours serving in Tanzania Africa. They went through a fundraising class and this is the book that was used. Our friends using these tools in this book fund raised their entire year and their travel expenses in two months time. Their success case is very unusual-however, the techniques taught in this book help them succeed. We bought this for both of our married kids and ourselves because we are all considering mission work in the next couple of years.
This book was easy to keep reading because it had plenty of humor and cartoons to illustrate the concepts but at the same time it was packed with concrete details that are helpful and insightful. One of the most interesting things to me about this book is that it challenges the reader to break from some of the poor fundraising methods that are quite often considered the proper way in favor of methods that actually achieve better results.
This is a well written, easy to read book that talks about support raising for missionaries and other self-supported ministries. The book is doctrinally sound and follows Biblical principles.
