This is a fun read for puzzle fans, with all levels of difficulty. The accompanying trivia to each brain teaser was a bonus over other puzzle books. Highly recommended, although I only give it a four because of the very annoying format. This type book does not lend itself to the Kindle format well. Access to the clues (if needed) and to the answers requires first leaving the open screen, linking to the clue/answer, then trying to find your way back to the original puzzle, to start the process all over. A print book would not present this problem.

Many of the brain teasers are rehashes of other brain teasers in the same book! I was very disappointed.

Was one of the best purchases before taking my teens overseas for their first Europe trip. Provided for hours and hours of entertainment and keep the “I wish I had my phone” or “can I have your phone” requests at bay. It even had the adults engaged.

Good to fill in the time when waiting in lines, doctor's office, etc. I was concerned about losing my place when reading solutions on my Kindle, but with bookmarks it works well.

The “teasers” were creative and interesting, and operated at a variety of levels. Good!

Bought this to enjoy with my granddaughter and we have had a great time working through the puzzles together.

Still working my way thru but having fun. Sometimes stop to do or read something mindless!

My dad and I have exchanged a variety of puzzles for the last 55+ years He enjoyed this book that gave a bit of history on some types of puzzles. He had to put the book away in order not to read it all in one day

This is one of two books about Magellan and his epic voyage. The other is Manchester's "A World Lit Only by Fire." Foir anyone with enough interest in the subject to read either book, I would recommend both. This book deals almost exclusively with the voyage, which after considerable haggling to get financing, began with five very small (by today's standards) leaky, under-equipped, clumsy, floating torture chambers, into which 250 men and some provisions were packed; and ended with two of the ships seprately limping back to Spain with only 18 of the crew still alive,Magellan having been killed in the Philippines, probably because he at some point during the voyage fell captive to the illusion of immortaltiy, and involved his beleaguered crew in an impossible battle with a native army.As one of the earlier reviewers observed, this book would have been improved by providing more information about the times. There is, after all, only so much that can be said about trying to cross the Pacific Ocean without any maps and limited supplies of food, water, and, most important of all, no understanding of the need for Vitamin C.At the same time, the Manchester book spends an enormous number of pages describing in great detail hat horrible conditions of Europe and the Papacy during this time. Despite several history courses that should have left me at least vaguely aware of how bad things were then, I was astonished at the picture he painted. At such length that by the time he got to Magellan's voyage, it seemed almost an afterthought.Of the books, overall I enjoyed "Edge of the World" more, but I learned more of value from Manchester's book.

This is definitely not the story you were taught in school. Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen is a powerful page turner of the true story of what Magellan and his crew went through just to find nutmeg and cinnamon. Many of the men brought back to life in Bergreens book are worthy of books just on their own stories. The desperation and solitude, cut off for months at a time without seeing another single human being is enough to make the most dedicated introverts among us cringe. The men on Magellan's armada had no idea what they would come across. Boiling water at the equator? Magnetic islands that could pull nails from the ships if they got too close? If you have a curiosity of how soft the comforts of our modern society has made us, look no further than this book. What these men endured and sacrificed for, the things that you can easily find on the grocery store shelves is mind boggling.

After reading All the journals of Captain Cooks Voyages, the Journal of Joseph Banks on Cooks first voyage, all of the Antarctic explorers, was looking forward to Magellan’s Voyage. However, in my opinion it is very poorly written and put together. Numerous “sidebars” where author just goes off on an entirely different tangent, happens so frequently was a pain to read, when you just wanted the voyage, diaries of crew, etc.Very slow going read. Compared to the Author : Joan Druett, Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World, a true story, this book about Magellan’s voyage is really TERRIBLE.This author doesn’t have a clue about how to tell a story or even how to organize it. With all the research he says he did, the book does not reflect it!I will not be buying any more books by this author, Laurence Bergreen again. I’d get a refund if I could! Waste of money.

Excellent! Well written, interesting and comprehensive. The author states that Magellan was and still is controversial, however, he does not seem controversial to me aside from his possibly ill-considered decision to engage in a fight with the natives in the Philippines which went awry and in which he was killed. This book is a fitting testimony to this man and the explorers of that time who ventured into the unknown in their tiny and frail wooden ships to extend knowledge of the world. Were they flawed? Of course. Aren't we all. What is important is that enterprising spirit which was and still is very important to the human quest for knowledge. Bergreen's book is a fitting reminder of this.

This is not a review of the book, which is a classic. It is a review of this edition, which has been put out on Amazon's self-publishing format CreateSpace. The thing that one does not know when purchasing this book is that each page consists of a double column of text. (See photo.) Maybe some people like this, but I don't. The lines of type are too long to be newspaper style but too short to be the length of a line of type in a normal book. I don't really like reading a book like this, thus the low rating. ps I also think it is deceptive of the publisher to not show any of these pages in the "Look Inside" sample that Amazon provides. pps The translator is not named. Seems unprofessional.

A few typos aside, I do not regret for a single minute taking the time to slowly read this book, and think about it. The chapters are very short and numerous, and it is easy to read a little bit at a time. Gandhi has an easy and friendly way of speaking to the reader, and I found myself admiring the memory he displayed, as well as the moral principles he strove to uphold. He is also able to inject a very light touch of humor into the description of some very difficult situations. Before reading this book, I would not have guessed that he had tried to commit suicide as a young man (by taking poisonous seeds), and I was thankful for the frankness with which he expresses his trials and flaws. He called his delving into many aspects of life an "experiment", and he succeeded in making a positive difference on so many lives.

First, I would like to say how much I admire Gandhi. I think he was one of the greatest men of the 20th Century. But, this book was just plain hard to read. The style was more like reading legislation than reading a life story. That probably makes sense, given Gandhi's educational training. This style might work for a short, thoughtful treatise on a specific topic. But, 500+ pages in this style was just too much.I finally did get through the book. I would like to say that it was worth it, to get to know Gandhi better. And, that might be true if this book was the only way to get to know Gandhi, but it's not. There are many other sources to learn about him. I think it would be better to chose one of the others.

This book ends just as Gandhi's life was getting interesting. In the Final chapter he says that there's no reason to discuss the last seven years because the facts are so well-known. Well they aren't well-known to me and frankly that's why I bought this book, to learn from his own hand about the events that ended British rule in India. There is absolutely nothing in this book about that. However I can tell you how difficult it is to find a loom and a splinter and that Gandhi insisted that his robe be 45 cm wide. Honestly it's a lot of discussion of who was in which meeting at which time while he was a lawyer in south Africa and very little about his civil rights fighting especially given the length of the book. If you're interested in Gandhi's leadership of the civil rights and national rights movements in India I'm sure there are much better sources . I would say that about once every 10 pages I found a couple of sentences that were interesting regarding his views on ahimsa but that's about it. Obviously he is one of the great figures in modern society but this book does not really support that or show why .

I have been wanting to read about Gandhi for some time and I noticed this on the Kindle list and started reading it.He has written this in an easily read form and it is mostly as if he is talking to the reader. He covers his life as he saw it and provides the reader with insight as to what moved him to his life of serving.I never knew that he got his start in serving in South Africa.I think this should be required reading for students as it is a wonderful book and not slanted by anyone other than Gandhi himself.I highly recommend it.

Gandhi's story was a bit long-winded, and he talked so self-righteously about himself at times to the point of annoying-ness...some things he talked about (i.e. his diet) I found quite irrelevant. It was interesting to read that he was married at a very young age - I never knew that, and the complexities of that marriage made him seem more real. There were points where I almost felt he looked down on black South Africans, like it was wrong for white South-Africans to treat Indians poorly, but a totally different story all together with how they treated Black people (i.e. one night he was taking a walk down a South African road and was berated by a white man. One of Gandhi's white friends caught this and got mad at the white man for berating Gandhi. Gandhi said something to the effect of 'Oh forgive him, he just thought I was a black man') - this is paraphrased, but you get the just of it.Still, his determination and fight for Indians to be treated equally was inspirational. His peaceful protests are what eventually inspired Martin Luther King and, to a point, Nelson Mandela, fight for the rights of blacks in America (King) and South Africa (Mandela). So for that, and for refusing to accept the racist status quo for his people, Gandhi was an inspiration.

Ajahn Brahm is by far my favorite Buddhist teacher. I have read all the others that are staples of your spiritual bookstore shelf--Chodron, Kornfield, Salzberg, Hanh, Surya Das, etc.. They are all useful teachers, but they lack Brahm's sense of humor, simplicity, and, quite frankly, what I take to be his empowerment. Brahm, a former British physicist and a plain spoken fellow, is, I believe, a genuine spiritual adept and an advahoot--to use the Hindi term for one who has given up everything for enlightenment. This means he has the spiritual power (the shakti, to again use a term from Hindi tradition) to accelerate your meditative progress simply by his presence and that presence adheres in his words, teachings, and techniques. If you practice his meditation teachings, you will quickly find yourself having blissful and unusual experiences--experiences that were absent or hard to come by when I practiced the meditation techniques given by other Buddhist teachers in the West. Because of this, he appears to be somewhat controversial in the Western Buddhist community. He is not nearly as warmly embraced by the folks I mentioned above as one might expect given the efficacy of his techniques. Yes, Kornfield writes an introduction to this book, but he offers some doubts or hesitancy concerning Brahm's teachings regarding Jhanas. I am not an advanced student so I am not qualified to enter into this debate, but I only know that Brahm's techniques work for me and Kornfield's tend to leave me cold. So if you're looking for Buddhist techniques that feel warm and juicy, instead of distant and intellectual, check out Master Brahm. He'll clear your head and warm your heart!

I've been studying Ajahn Brahm's YouTube videos on meditation for about a month. They've brought me peace of mind and bliss in my day-to-day life. So I decided to grab a copy of this handbook. It contains everything from his video taped meditation retreats laid out in an organized and in-depth way. The handbook goes beyond the videos. The methods are the same and they don't conflict with each other.Let me first step back and say that Ajahn Brahm's teachings on meditation are the only ones that have ever worked for me. I learned meditation at a Zen center in Atlanta in 2002 and have practiced that style of Zen meditation on and off. I'd lose my practice whenever I'd find no joy in it. I felt more frustrated and the "concentration" I developed made me more on edge. It wasn't until I recently started learning from Ajahn Brahm that I realized I was doing it all wrong.Of course Buddhists over the past 1000+ years can't seem to agree on anything, and Thich Naht Hanh's teachings on meditation conflict with Ajahn Brahms, for example, but I can tell you that I have experienced deep joy from Ajahn Brahm's interpretation of the Buddha's meditation methods. Therefore I'm sticking with it.Thanks to Ajahn Brahm's methods, I'm meditating throughout the day whenever I can find spare time simply because I now love to meditate. Meditation never feels like a chore. I do it now because I want to.

For those who are interested in easy to understand instructions about meditation, this is the book. The author is a famous Buddhist monk who has been meditating for over 40 years. He gets into very deep meditative states and explains how anyone who wants to reach those same states of immense calm can do the same. For those who like the book, there are over 1000 YouTube videos with talks given by Ajahn Brahm on many different life topics. He adds humor to most of his talks and is an excellent speaker able to explain things very clearly.

Over the years as a practicing Buddhist I have read my share of books and manuals on meditation, especially those dealing with or touching upon Ānāpānasati and Jhāna. Initially I read these many books to learn from experienced meditators what to do and then, after I had accumulated quite a store of them, I re-read them to reconcile their different and sometimes conflicting messages. Is Jhāna attainable these days, in this noisy, me-me-me world of ours? Some books hold that this is no longer possible (maybe one in a million, if that, can truly attain these deep absorptions, they say); other books skirt the issue altogether; while Ajahn Brahm courageously holds that: “Yes, it is possible.” And not only possible, but attainable by anyone, given the right intention, a virtuous life, and perseverance. This book is a meditation manual, and now, looking over my book shelf of its many siblings and cousins, I clearly see that if I could only bring one of them with me to that clichéd desert island, this would be the one.Ajahn Brahm is an intelligent man, and he reasons very clearly. His analysis of the applicable Pali Canon references and his reconciliation of apparently conflicting passages deserve applause. His approach to Samādhi and Jhāna is logical and practical, and—above all—both understandable and doable. Setting out from the basics of meditation, navigating through the handling of hindrances, then treating mindfulness and the beautiful breath with both clarity and contagious enthusiasm, he leads you all the way from your initial sitting down and letting go of past and future, to—down the path a ways—enlightenment and Nibbāna.This is a book (a manual, a friend) that invites and encourages practice, and as such (despite Jack Kornfield’s somewhat guarded introduction and recommendation) is what, in my view, the world desperately needs today. In two words: Highly Recommended.

The clearest roadmap to enlightenment I've encountered. Through following its instructions seriously for a time, I was able to achieve the first jhana. I haven't progressed beyond that stage due to my own lack of focus in the last few years, not because of this book's instruction. I have no personal experience to back up its claims about the remaining jhanas. But my intuition tells me that this book is correct. One feels, in reading it and following its very practical advice, like an arrow speeding toward the target.

Review

"An excellent read, very accessible for the academic and enthusiast alike."--The Astrobiology Society of Britain"Echoes of Life is a book that simply must be read by all interdisciplinary science enthusiasts. The book knits together in a unique way the context and characters of a remarkable field that has spawned and touched so many others. It is a delightfully endearing Who's Who of organic geochemistry; self-deprecating and respectfully irreverent in the way the central characters are linked to the landmark developments. Overall, the book will captivate and inspire the uninitiated, while current practitioners will be enthralled; it is quite simply 'everything you wanted to know about organic geochemistry but were afraid to ask'."--Richard Evershed, Chemistry World"Echoes of Life: What Fossil Molecules Reveal about Earth History is in many ways a remarkable book. At once a highly readable introduction to the field of organic geochemistry, it also manages to capture the deep sense of curiosity and wonder associated with scientific investigation...Deserves a wide readership, not only by practitioners of the sciences mentioned here but also by historians and philosophers of science who are interested in more than abstractions."-- Bill Green, Chemical & Engineering News"A festive celebration of why science is fun and of the "rampant human curiosity" that fuels sciene, scientists, and young elephants alike."--Science"A compelling, readable chronicle of scientific research, that blends the basics of organic chemistry with the needs of other scientific pursuits including geology, paleoclimatology, ocean sciences, petroleum geochemistry, environmental sciences, archeology, and the origin of life. The description of the research is understandable for the layperson and retains sufficient scientific details for scientists." -- John W. Farrington, Scientist Emeritus, and former Senior Scientist, Vice President for Academic Programs and Dean, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution"Echoes of Life provides answers to all the questions that any chemist, or indeed any scientist, could possibly ask about the history of life on Earth. Its authors of this book conduct a forensic analysis of bodies discovered over a period of nearly 80 years to make it read more like a detective story than a text book".-- Colin Pillinger, Head Scientist on Beagle 2, the UK-led project to land on Mars"Perhaps too late scientists begin to realise how much the living and the material Earth are one. Through the authors' pioneering research we gain glimpses of the character of our planet from childhood to its present seniority. Although a first-rate biogeochemical text, the book features some of the qualities of a family photograph, and is all the more interesting. Life and Earth scientists both should have it on their shelves." --James Lovelock, Honorary Visiting Fellow, Green College, Oxford"As scientists' descriptions of earth history grow more detailed and more relevant to public policy and economics, laymen are bound to be both curious and suspicious. 'How do they know what the climate was like 200 million years ago, or why petroleum formed in some places and not in others, or what happened to marine life during the last great mass extinction?' Echoes of Life provides clear explanations of the molecular tools used to answer such questions and an engaging narrative of scientific history, skillfully encompassing both the science and the personalities that produced it." -- John Hayes, Scientist Emeritus, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution"Echoes of Life is a fascinating and comprehensive history of biomarker research spanning the birth of the field to the application of biomarkers to a variety of scientific disciplines. Gaines et al. present an enormous amount of information in a simple yet elegant manner. This wonderfully interdisciplinary book is a must read for biomarker experts and for those who enjoy intriguing scientific detective stories." -- Samantha Joye, Professor, Department of Marine Sciences, The University of Georgia"Echoes of Life is well written and valuable to anyone interested in the intersection between different scientific fields and in learning about the process of scientific discovery. Highly Recommended."--Choice Magazine"For some, the path taken is a good introductory textbook or review article, but this book is a far more enjoyable read...To someone who has been introduced to biomarkers, the individual chapters stand alone as an interesting biography of a scientific line of inquiry."--Astrobiology"Those who are interested in geochemistry, and those who are looking to broaden their knowledge of the connections between chemical compounds and the diversity of life, will find Echoes of Life well worth reading. Readers will come away with an understanding of what those compounds mean in a given time and place."--Bioscience

Susan M. Gaines, Geoffrey Eglinton, and Jürgen Rullkötter with scientific illustrations by Florian Rommerskirschen have produced an excellent history of the discovery of biological trace molecules in ancient sediments. Their stated goal was to write a book that is first rate science and understandable to most readers without being condescending or simplified. I think they have succeeded admirably, but potential readers do need to understand that there are molecular diagrams and chemical terminology in Echoes of Life that will not be readily understandable without some background in organic or bio-chemistry. Readers who can remember a term from one page to the next, even if they can't pronounce it, will have no trouble following what is happening, they just won't be able to visualize things like a chemist does. For those like me whose memory doesn't always extend across pages and chapters, Echoes of Life has an excellent glossary.Text on every page is dense, by which I mean that the leading (space between lines) is less than usually seen in the popular press - the pages are filled with good writing and good information. The authors deal with their subjects in chronological order as much as possible, they use acronyms and scientific buzz words as seldom as practical, and the diagrams are very clear. Unfortunately, there are no portrait photographs and only one work-site photograph, so the reader never learns what the authors and scientists who are discussed look like except for Eglinton. A minor point, perhaps, but one that would have humanized even more these very human stories. There are also no dinosaurs, but each investigator and research result has a fascinating story that the authors clearly relate and link appropriately to the stories of other researchers and results. Last and perhaps least but much appreciated, Pete Smith and Tim Knowles drew some interesting and humorous cartoons to accompany the chapter bibliographies. Echoes of Life is a good read.

Fantastic science written as a story, the way it is in fact developped.Content is exhausting wonderful you forget to breath just looking for next written line information.I burnt literally my eyes on it, but perhaps was contributing to this sensation the too small size of typing leters chosen, please for any new edition (for sure this will be done) make it more comfortable and let the only stress to the reader about enjoy addiction.

Kindle version gets 2 stars. Using the Kindle format, the images are blurry, even on iPad.I recommend you check the free sample on your device prior to purchasing an electronic copy. The first illustration is prior to the introduction.

This book is a narrative recounting the last several decades of advance in the area of organic geochemistry. The primary focus is on the work of Geoff Eglinton and his colleagues. An interesting and informative read. Would be interesting to most environmental scientists, oceanographers, and especially geochemists.

The book has been thoroughly updated with references to new research and current events woven into it. It includes chapters on Black racial identity development in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, which I have found extremely insightful and practical. Dr. Tatum brings in examples from raising her own sons and tidbits of the conversations she had with them, modeling parent-child interactions around race for parents who may be faced with similar problems. Another part that I found very useful is the discussion of Affirmative Action and some arguments against it that are frequently brought up. That section helped me articulate my own position better and be more prepared for times when such conversations arise spontaneously with students or colleagues. Overall, this is a classic and a highly recommended read for anyone interested in issues of social justice, equal opportunity, democracy, and the psychological underpinnings of prejudice.

An excellent resource. I use this with my students and they always get a lot from it. It breaks down race in a way that's intellectually honest and accessible. I'd recommend this to anyone but especially to anyone who needs a primer on racism from an academic perspective.

When I first picked up this book, I didn’t know what to expect. The first 35 pages alone blew my mind... giving me new information, and confirming some things I’d been observing in society. If you interact with children in ANY way (parent, family member, social worker, teacher, coach, babysitter, nanny, pastor, etc.), I HIGHLY recommend you read this book. It not only talks about race/identity of young black people, but it also delves into the identities of Whites, Latins, Middle Eastern/North Africans, Asians, Native (American) Indians, Asian Indians, biracial children, and transracial adopted children (a family of adopting a child of a different race). I learned SO much!

If you are looking for a book written from a biblical perspective on the subject of racism, this is NOT that book. The author is a secular author, but there is still value in reading the book for Christians. If you are committed to becoming a “change agent” in your own heart and the community around you as it relates to racial and discrimination issues, this book will be helpful. You may not agree with her examples of why racism is a hot issue in our country (e.g., the election of Pres. Trump, the imprisonment of a high percentage of black people, etc.) but you will still benefit from hearing her reasoning, because our first objective in being “change agents” should be to understand one another. I read this book to understand a segment of our society that sees racism as a bigger issue than I do. The book came recommended to me by numerous people, and the author cities thousands of authors, studies and other articles – thus, this book represents a fair representation of one of the primary sides on the issue of racism in our country. After reading her book, I agree with her last paragraph where she wrote, “Is it better? My answer is: Not yet, but it could be. It’s up to us to make sure it is. I remain hopeful.”

The work of Dr. Tatum should be required reading for every teacher and student alike. There is no excuse for ignorance of racial identity development when such an amazing resource is available.

Outstanding resource. Love the updates to this powerful book!

I ordered this book for a Race/Gender Grad class. I reads fast for me and really helps you to think about what has and what has not changed in all these years. The book arrived very fast.

The book was a very interesting read. Although many of the things I had guessed. To have someone who had verified it was all the more enlightening. The book enunciates the climate within our society today. We as black Americans need recognize what is going on around us and take a stand.
