Buckminster Fuller indeed wanted, tried hard to use technology for ending slavery of humanity for his whole life. But like Nicola Tesla erased by the society, he was marginalized compared to his great achievement as a scientist and human being.I believe in real science has to serve humanity and work with Nature. Buckminster Fuller demonstrated it.Final chapter is Tetrascroll"Children are born true scientists," said Fuller in old age. Nowhere else is the desire to learn so sincere and receptivity so intact. From children we can learn how we learn... The little girl Goldilocks explains to the bears the laws of geometry in nature and the development of human civilization from sea travel.

"Your Private Sky" is a must-have book for Bucky fans. In addition to presenting a wealth of new material from Fuller's archives it also arranges and presents Bucky's life and works in an innovative format that emphasizes the larger view of his work and the natural progression of his thoughts. The authors have taken the time to do the re-search which allowed them to see the larger picture. This book about Bucky's life and inventions goes from the whole to the particular.One example of the thoroughness of "Your Private Sky," compared to earlier books, is in it's handling of the Dymaxion house. This is the first book, I've seen, that includes drawings and photos of the initial square or rectangular 4D home. The authors have done a great job of ransacking Fuller's archives to find just the right images and words to convey the flow or progression of Bucky's designs. This was the first time I grasped how the work on the Dymaxion home designs was related to the latter invention of the Geodesic dome.Most of the never-before-published photos, drawings and writings in "Your Private Sky" were found in Bucky's Chronofile, the 300-foot long series of personal history files that Bucky started collecting in 1915. Except for the short introduction and chronology at the beginning of the book, all the material in this 522 page book consists of items selected from Bucky's Chronofile. The words are selections from Bucky's writings.The graphic design, printing and binding of "Your Private Sky" compliment the quality of its contents. The superior binding permits the pages to lie flat so you can view the hundreds of full bleed photographs including many two page spreads. The book's visual organization is excellent especially considering the variety of items and styles that had to be accommodated. My minor criticisms are that I would have liked to see more indexing and source information and a few less spelling and translation errors in this book.A superb book; it's well organized, packed with never before seen photos and drawings, thoughtfully arranged and edited, and printed and bound using first class materials and methods.

Because Bucky did his best to get his message out to as many people as possible, at a cost of $65 I am sure that this is not the type of book he would wanted to see produced. It seems like the book could have been printed in a less costly form and many of the graphics which were clearly just taken from video eliminated so that the material could be made available to more people at a lower price.That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the glorious visual aspect of this book. In my years spent researching my book "Buckminster Fuller's Universe" and working on other Fuller writing, I had not seen some of the photographs and illustrations displayed here. This is a must have for any Bucky fan.I don't recommend it as an introduction to the ideas and wisdom of Fuller because, as is true with almost all of Fuller's writing, the ideas need to be studied not read over once, and this book does not provide a complete enough picture to be a good study guide. Look to the writing of others for your introduction to Bucky, and look to this book to add to your understanding of a man who is recognized as one of the great thinkers, geniuses and Renaissance men of modern times.

I was looking forward to receivinging this book .........The newly published book was just what I expected. It contains Bucky's whole life history and his various ideas that arised during his life such as the famous geodesic dome, dymaxion products, tensegrity, world game and so on. Many are what I have not obtained so far in detail from other literatures already published. So they are extremely usefull and fun to me. The most important thing that I could get from the book is that I could feel strong power to live the daily life again with fresh dreams.

I bought this book as soon as I read a review about it in "The Writer" Magazine (Dec 09, pg 44, by Amy Wallen).In an irony to the subject, flash fiction, the introduction of this field guide is the longest chapter in the entire book, weighing-in at 26 pages. Despite its length, Ms. Misah provides the reader with an interesting history of flash fiction.I found the essays within this guidebook to be useful and informative. Each essay ranged from 3-9 pages, which included a writing prompt and an example of flash fiction. As you could expect, the authors had some differences of opinion on what makes an effective short-short story. What they did agree on, was that each story should be thought-provoking and leave the reader with an indelible image.I found most of the story examples, "thought provoking" alright. My usual responses were, "huh?" or even, "What was that all about?"I guess I'm not the literary type. I'm not into deciphering an author's meaning and images in his or her story.My favorite was "Inside Job" by Pamela Painter. In this flash--(warning! Plot spoiler ahead!)--a university couple are attending a party. After noticing her husband hit on another one of his graduate students, Marla goes into the kitchen to grab a drink, but accidently douses her blouse with seltzer water. One of Marla's graduate students tries to help dab off the water and she guides his hand--underneath her blouse.Whew!Talk about an "indelible image!"I rate this book a solid four stars. This is more out of personal bias. With the exception of "Inside Job," it's hard for me to get excited over a how-to book. However, for anyone interested in writing flash fiction, or improving their craft in this niche-genre, this is an invaluable guide.

I've got this book as well as the Rose Metal Field Guide to Flash Non-Fiction and I love them both. They both follow the same format, an essay on writing followed by a prompt or exercise and an example piece. The included examples are themselves almost worth the price of admission. The reading list at the back is wonderful as well and can take you further. Highly recommended if Flash Fiction is your area of interest!

One chapter on Titles is poorly written, but the introduction is great and several chapters are very strong. I like how they have sample stories after each chapter, and the flash activities each chapter offers would work well in a class or for a group of writers meeting together, or even on your own if you don't have a group.

This collection of 25 essays from experts in the flash fiction field, is an excellent introduction to flash fiction for those new to the genre and a great guide for established writers. Each essay explores a different facet of the flash fiction genre from length, to form, to editing. In addition to the essays, most of the contributors also include exercises and examples which I find very useful. An excellent guide to writing flash fiction that should be read by anyone interested in the genre.

Essays by influential voices in the Flash Fiction world (authors and editors), along with sample stories and great advice. Highly recommended if you're at all interested in this fierce little form.

I loved this book! Each section is written by a different accomplished flash fiction writer and focuses on a different aspect of writing flash fiction. It's followed by a story that illustrates the point, then an assignment. It's good for beginners but also those further along in writing flash, who want to branch out to new methods and ideas. I'd recommend this book for anyone who is interested in writing flash fiction.

This is a great read for anyone that is looking to improve their communication skills, whether it be for personal or professional reasons. I am involved in Leadership Training and find many in the business world have communication skills that have atrophied in today's digital environment of e-mails, IMs, and texts. If you are someone who is looking to improve these critical skills, this is the book for you.

Reading this clearly shows that Julian is a very experienced and professional listener and speaker. I watched most of his amazing speeches and in book he reveals what he does to bring it over the right way. Lots to learn, practice and experience. Love it!

I would not be exaggerating to say this book changed my life. I had seen Julians TED talk and wanted to learn more. one of my main issues was that I always felt like I was not being heard and was frequently talked over . This lead to a number of communication issues especially in high pressure situations .I picked up the audio book and was floored . this book is masterfully written and the suggestion Julian makes all work they are not puff pop psychology they are legitimate skills that can turn you into the person in the everyone listens to in the room. These skills take practice especially avoiding the deadly sins of speech but the results are incredible.I was able to obtain employment in a customer facing role that I was woefully under qualified for, the interviewers all felt that at the end of the day they I was the one they kept coming back too. They said my communication was the most memorable.This book will improve your life. I also recommend Amy Cuddy's Presence . This book mention her and I followed up from there.

Love his routine to do before a speech. Very easy to follow. Some of it is not super useful, but interesting throughout.

As a child I climbed on the 1225 quite often while she was being restored at MSU, with the volunteers telling me and my brother all about the mechanics of steam, giving us steam dreams of a bygone era. A few years later we watched her move on to even further restoration and eventual reentry into scenic passenger service.But this remarkable book is much more than a highly detailed account of that restoration by a dedicated team of volunteers. Beginning with the Lima Locomotive Works in the 1930s, the author traces the history of steam in the pre-war era, its zenith in the war years and eventual decline. This is done through the lens of the Berkshire series of Pere Marquette locomotives, of which 1225 is one. Replete with a massive array of photographs and detailed captions, the reader is easily transported back to a time when steam reigned supreme and giants roamed the rails. This book is a fantastic addition to any railfan's library.A minor correction to one caption is on page 89, which incorrectly labels the mainline as being that of the Grand Trunk. In fact, it is on the current CSX mainline, formerly C&O, looking east just to the east of the Harrison crossing. But that is a minor point for nerds. The book is just splendid!

The more money their employers were the more outrageous their behavior.

Needed to continue on to find out if the author and his wife make it through and find a decent life without crazy employers. Well as the title says the clowns are still out there and make good fodder for more nutty stories, which the author does so well.Such hard working people to have to live with such selfish, demanding and demeaning people. And to have a health scare and treatment while doing this work seems so difficult. But the ending seems to be leading up to another book.....?. Well written and a good read.

Dobe's "write-as-you-talk" writing style makes this, and his other books easy and enjoyable to read. This one is about the stories and lives of the fortune seekers of Coranado's and various Indian's tribes stashed gold and silver. They also chased after gold mines that somehow can't ever be found, but the rich history in the tale is so believable that you want to saddle up your Mustang, grab a pick and shovel and go find it your own self.This is a great evening by the fire or bedtime book. I loved it and several storiers, like "Secret in the Burned Cedar Break", "An Innocent Liar", "The Masure of a Good Wagon Rod", and "The Facts About Fort Ramirez" are worth a second, and maybe a third read..This was purchesed as a first addition collector's book and it arrived in exactly the condition described in the listing. A great hardback find to leave the grandchildren because with what history of Texas they are being taught in schools today only the politically correct varity. It's a sad state of affairs.......................Thank you J. Frank Dobe, wherever you are. Between you, Fredrick Remington and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, we can lmost put ourselves back in the day, those of us who wish we had been there with you.

Great Texas folklore. Dobie was literally the father of Texas Folk History. University of Texas at Austin even has a library named after him, dedicated to Texana. I live in San Antonio, not far from many of the lost mines and buried treasure he talks about in this book. Reading it almost makes me want to go out to the Hill Country and start digging.

good book, am a southwest and Dobie fan

This wonderful book takes you back to the true Old west, violent, beautiful, raw.These are the people who made America what it is, by their living and dying. One Texan was offered some land in Mississippi by his brother if he would go back, his answer" There's no western sunsets there". Indians and settlers, the good and the bad, these tales take you back. So come and smell the dusty plains, feel the searing heat of the deserts,and enjoy. Will be a permanent addition to any bookshelf.

Tremendous amount of stories. Some are moderate in length, others are very short. Good easy, enjoyable reading.

OK so I was born about 80 years late! Enjoyable writing style that draws you into the fables of the old southwest. You'll never look at a draw or dry gulch the same again. Food for the imagination. I enjoyed it greatly which is what i believe Mr. Dobie meant to do.

Good book about lost mines in the southwest

Excellent compilation of various Texas lost treasure troves and mines. Well annotated for expanded interest pursuit. A side bonus is the reference to geographical areas once under the influence of Mexico, parts of old Spanish land grants, and ranch names long forgotten.
