I bought this as a reference so I would not have to buy a whole lot of Osprey books. One reviewer stated that it does not contain any naval uniforms. That is correct. I tried to research the German submariner uniform, but there were none nor were there any other naval uniforms. The book contains good maps and general information concerning the war. In the section about Austria-Hungary, the authors have a fairly favorable opinion of the Austria-Hungary Chief of Staff, General Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf. That general's only successful conquest was to marry his mistress. Because of his stupidity, the world was plunged into war. His legacy is the blood of millions on his hands, both in his empire and neighboring countries. Austria-Hungary was never prepared for war, and they could not even defeat the Russians. Germany was forced to rush divisions to the Eastern Front to prevent it from being overrun by Russian armies. Some reviewers claim that there is too little detail on the outfits of some of the lesser combatants. That is true, however, the authors state that the main emphasis is on the major players. This is still a good reference and coffee table book. It was still useful to a history buff like myself.
I'm not happy at all. The art work is great, but I would prefer photographs since an artist can draw anything, accurate or not. I was hoping for a definitive look at the world's armies in WW1, and they got so much wrong with what was fielded by the United States that I can't believe anything they said about the other armies. Case in point: the U. S. Rifle M1903 was designed with a shorter length so the Infantry and Cavalry could use the same weapon and a separate cavalry carbine would not be needed. The Authors went so far as to say that U. S. Cavalry (non-existent in France) carried similar but shorter carbines but didn't name a model, because they don't exist, either. Also (see picture) a USAEF Army officer would NOT wear his pistol belt over a leather Sam Brown belt, which didn't come along til late war anyway. Also, he'd most likely, but not necessarily, wear leather puttees that give the illusion of boots rather than the enlisted man's "wrapped" leggings which were hard to deal with and quite often came unwrapped at the most inopportune moments. In addition, if you look closely at the photo, the officer has a holster and magazine pouch for the .45 cal Colt M1911 automatic pistol, yet the pistol butt sticking out of the holster is clearly a M1917 revolver, also .45 cal but requires a different holster and magazine pouch.
Uniforms of World War 1 delivers an excellent illustrated account of the uniforms worn by all the major armies in World War 1, and includes a wealth of supporting information about their development and history. While it may be a bit thin on the lesser-known countries in the Balkans, it makes up for this with the depth it pours into the other nations. The full-color illustrations are unrivaled in their detail and quantity. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is curious about World War 1, and the armies that fought in it.
Fantastic book. The illustrations are top notch -- and while there are plenty of them, this book is 80% information, 20% illustrations. Perhaps 70/30. Uniforms are not only covered factually, but the "why's" of the uniform choices are as well. On top of that, the first 30 pages or so of the book is rich in background info on WWI. Nothing you don't already know if you're a history buff, but interesting nonetheless. I would have paid 10-20 dollars more for this if I had to, it's honestly that good!
This is an excellent book that's very detailed and part of an excellent series (that sadly I haven't finished collecting). It's good for historians and hobbyists and presents a lot of excellent pictures as well as detailed descriptions along with historical explanations behind the units, changes, kit, etc. A great title and reference for a subject that is otherwise somewhat difficult to find references on.
A wonderful book, just received. I'm recovering from major surgery and it's the the sort of distraction I need. It has the development and variety of the uniforms based on country with lots of detailed information.
No Naval Uniforms?! Nowhere in the description does it just say "Army Uniforms" except in the second half of the subtitle (only available once you get the book or if you happen to examine the cover image online very carefully), and there is no "Look Inside" to examine the TOC where this might have been made clear. The title perhaps should read "Army Uniforms of WWI"? Because of this and the other oversights previously mentioned by other reviewers, I give it 3 stars.
I was a little disappointed in this book in that it does not provide as much detailed information about the uniforms and their wear as I would like. I do not collect or study world war 1 uniforms and wanted a good overview of the them. This book did provide that and does provide some good illistrations. However, not a lot of detailed photos or information. For the price, I recommend it. It will give you enough coverage for you to determine if and where you want to conduct a more detailed and indepth study.
