People fantasize about the ancient world and as an ancient historian I'm often amused and annoyed by what these fantasies entail. This is especially true in books written for children and young adults where the nastiness (by our modern standards) of the ancient world are often overlooked and underplayed. Mary Ray's "The Ides of April" does a fairly good job of looking at the concerns of citizens, young people, and slaves in mid-first century Rome. While the murder mystery kicks off sharply I do wish she'd spent more time on the characters before the entire legal nightmare began so that we could be more emotionally invested in the characters. Likewise it ends a bit aburptly. I haven't read any of the other books of the series yet, but it seems like the same characters may not be encountered which is a pity. The characters are well done, they seem to grasp the mindset of the people of that time though I think holding onto a Greek identity when one is born a slave in Rome is a bit awkward. I'd recommend it to anyone between 14 and 20 who is interested in the ancient world or in power dynamics in history. For those of us who are older, it can be entertaining as well.

Good book

I got this book for my kids because they are studying ancient history this school year. My son (11) listened to it on audio and he liked it, although I'm not sure he caught some of the plot intricacies. I read it aloud to my daughter (9) and it was very difficult for her to understand what was going on. I personally liked the story line well enough, but I do think it is a bit hard to understand sometimes. In the author's attempt to be subtle, I even found myself a little confused at times. The political aspect of the storyline was pretty much lost on me - there was not enough detail to catch it. That being said, I truly love historical fiction and I liked the book. Definitely do not recommend for anyone younger than high school, unless they are a sophisticated reader.

As other reviewers mentioned, the plot of this book is hard to follow. Many characters are introduced right away in the beginning, and, even as an adult, I found it hard to keep them all straight. Also, I found some of the story line hard to believe (spoiler alert): Hylas, the young salve, is very courageous and resourceful, but in the end he gets captured because he is walking in a circle and doesn't notice the Roman guards. That seemed completely contrived just to put him in prison. I would not give this book to a younger reader and expect him/her to follow it easily. Even as a read aloud, I think kids would have a hard time following the plot. I did like the descriptions of life in Rome, and the prison scenes were especially vivid. You do not want to be in a Roman prison. But I would choose a different book for my kids to read as historical fiction for the time period.

Part Agatha Christie, part Eloise McGraw ... this book totally blew me away! Mary Ray is terrific, practically creating a whole new genre of books - children's historical mysteries. The plot flows beautifully from one catastrophic event to another, creating a tale of incredible skill and baffling turns.Not much has been written in the Ancient-Roman category anyway, and this book is made even more unique by its point of view - that of a slave. It exposes the so-called 'glamour' of Rome to be merely a circle of cruelty and struggle. This book is not for the very young, but discerning readers 12 & up will find this book absolutely wonderful. I can't endorse it too strongly!

The thing about this book was that it felt _REAL_. It was hard to remember it was *just* a book.You felt the danger; you felt the bruises on the ribs. You wanted the hero to make it. You just didn't find yourself doubting the realness of it.Now, it's been a couple years since I read this, so perhaps I was just more gullible. But I don't think so. I still remember it, after all this time. Its magic was a special fete considering I had NEVER been interested in the Roman era or historical mysteries.When the book was over, I wanted it to keep going.An excellent historical mystery. I highly doubt you'll regret reading it.

The book does an excellent job of describing the places and countries to go for wildlife viewing in Africa. It also provides categories of available lodging with basic descriptions of activities available (ie night safaris, safari walks, etc.). Maps show where the lodges and camps are located in and near the various national parks, and many of the lodges have photos of the facility in the book. A safari company organized our trip, but the book enabled us to ask about other locations, things to do, and places to go. The book was invaluable for for our planning, and will be taken on the trip.

Bought this for background to prepare for my African safaris. This covered much of the area I was traveling and it gives a great starting point for planning and insight. Beautiful pictures. Although this book was used, it was "brand new" and appreciate the seller's description. My only issue with the book is that due to its size/weight, it is too big to take on safari, so you need a smaller safari guide for the floral/fauna and park guides.

I'll try and come back to post a more thorough review at a late point. Just wanted to get the 5 stars up because this book is excellent. Very detailed. Even the continent on the front is 3d embossed! Nice book, TONS of valuable info. I just bought about a dozen books for a safari Im planning on taking and this book may be the best of them.

Very disapointing purchase. Spend $21 and will not continue reading. Very shallow information. No real insights on wildlife, countries and people. Would get more valuable information on wikitravel or similar online portals. It reads like a marketing brochuren to disneyland. It is sad to see that literature on africa is on such a basic level and gets published.

Extremely informative in helping us to plan our trip to South Africa.It helped us come up with our itinerary. We're also using the Africa Adventure Company, owned by the writer of this book, to help us every step of the way especially for our Safari and Capetown visits!

Very helpful to me since I have not traveled much as to what to expect. Much info on each area of Aftica. Easy to read and the temperature charts were a good way to help decide when to go.

There may indeed be helpful information in this book, but the choppy, ill-organized layout rife with grammatical errors was frustrating to read. Worse, the author operates a travel agency specializing in African travel and uses this book to advertise his services every few pages. The blatant solicitation makes me wonder how much - if any - of his information is unbiased.

I love this book! So many of the reviews already written sum up the basic narrative so I'll be brief on that. Drawing from their experiences helping cause change during the civil rights movement the authors define literacy as a gatekeeper course between becoming a sharecropper of the future or getting a better job. They pull into their discussion actual examples of building a ground roots efforts both during the civil rights conflicts and with their algebra project. They don't make success sound easy but do actively pull youths into their movements - empoyering them and giving them the message that they can do better.The day to day details on building a groundswell movements were helpful - and something I hadn't read before, especially in an education context. They give actual examples - at the end of the book - on how they simplify math teaching (by breaking down wording that isn't natural, such as symbol based, and interpretting it in more natural language so the children can see the problem differently then pick up the symbols).Most of the education related books I've read aren't as original or interesting as this one. I keep recommending it and will use what I learned going forward.

As a math teacher who works with minority youth in New York City, I was interested in reading about the Algebra Project, a grassroots effort to get disadvantaged students into algebra at an early age. I believe, as these authors appear to believe, that a good education is the best path to civil equality today. What we haven't yet figured out is how to best provide a quality education across race and class boundaries. I wanted to see how the Algebra Project addressed those issues. Unfortunately, I didn't find exactly what I was looking for here.Perhaps I should have been better informed myself, but the first half of this book isn't much about the Algebra Project at all. It is a memoir of the authors' participation in the voter registration push in Mississippi in the early sixties. Though fascinating, it wasn't what I was expecting. And, though I respect the authors' desire to give as many people from that period a voice, this book suffers from a barrage of names and quotes that only those involved would have an easy time keeping track of.In the second part, a description of the development of the Algebra Project begins, with its seeds in Boston and its spread to Mississippi and other areas of the South. The authors show how its success is in its grassroots support from parents and students, mirroring the spread of the civil rights movement from the first half of the book. The Project has many of the qualities of a successful math initiative, including real-life connections for the students, success in moving them forward, growing buy-in from the teachers and support from the community. As a teacher, what I would have liked to see more of is exactly what kinds of lessons are being taught. There is one developed example in an appendix but not enough for me to really grasp what is being taught and how.In the end, despite this being an interesting story of the development of an idea, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. There's a lot of anecdotal evidence on how to get an educational initiative off the ground, but not a lot of specifics on the what and how of this project. For those who want an inspirational true story of strides being made in education, this is a good place to look. For nuts and bolts, you'll have to look elsewhere.

This is a very good book on how math literacy is the next civil right. The book discusses the Algebra Project, an organization founded by 1960's civil rights leader Bob Moses, to teach algebra to kids in inner-cities and rural communities.The beginning of the book reads like Moses' autobiography about his years organizing in Mississippi. He then discusses how groups like the Jews, Koreans, and Chinese relied on math as the basis for their upward mobility. Moses' theory is that as the world becomes more and more focused on technology and innovation, math will have an even greater importance.Summation: Read this book -- it is very eye-opening.

Algebra in the 6th grade is the new Civil Rights effort or old since Bob Moses has been doing this for decades. The rest of the educational establishment just caught on.

The Project, the Man and the book are exceptional and is a 'must know and read' for every mathematics educator and policy maker.

Fascinating account of the on-the-ground civil rights " right to vote" campaign in the SOUTH.Then followed by development of "The Algebra Project" (still going strong) to help black kids become people, not things, in a way that would not attract too much attention, and benefit the participants mathematically as well.

Love this book for the different historical perspective of people involved in social justice activities in the community.

It is difficult, at times, to root for any of them, knowing what they do for a living. Hawkins does her best to humanize these people (drug thugs: they’re just like you!), but ever present in the back of your mind is the knowledge that these people are not the sort you want to know in real life.You come for the love triangle, and that’s why you stick around. Will Natalia realize which man’s intentions are pure? Will she put her heart at risk with blind loyalty? Like I said, you will know the answers before she does. She’s only twenty, after all, and has led a fairly sheltered life, despite the family business.Of course the book ends on a cliffhanger. My hope is that Natalia doesn’t spend the second book still dithering between brothers, but if anyone can pull that off, it’s Jessica Hawkins. She packs this book with so much action that you will feel breathless as you read it. One action missing: hot headboard rocking. Jessica Hawkins even makes that okay, though. There is one scene, and you'll want more. And then you realize that this long, slow burn will have a tremendous payoff.

Cristiano, Diego, and Natalia will definitely be on my mind, because HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!This book is perfect for those who love fast paced, angsty, steamy, and breathtaking books! Violent Delight left me gasping. WHAT’S TO COME? Who knows. Well played Hawkins, well played.

$300 less than buying this textbook at the campus bookstore. (Priced $300-360) The cover is exactly as pictured, white cover, yellow text bubble, med students on the front. It made me nervous considering the lab manuals, etc, I've seen, have a blue cover but it is exactly as needed for class. This is an international version of Hole's Anatomy and Physiology 14th Edition, it's just paperback. Access code and lab book are separate.

I got this for my Anatomy Physiology class and it saved me about $150. The rental price was more than what I paid to own it. The text and the diagrams were exactly the same as the instructor was using for every single lecture. I only had one dependency the entire semester on one of the "Clinical Application" sections, but it was insignificant as the instructor knew some of the 210 students in the class were using older versions of the text anyway and didn't care because 99.9% of the material was exactly the same. If you are a Pre-med, nursing, dental, what ever... do yourself a favor and this is the textbook you are required for class, get it. Don't be scared. It's the same book with a different cover. In fact, it's a softcover, so it weighs less than the hardcover version.

The book is great. It is a nicely organized and written introduction to anatomy and physiology. It is very informative, which also makes it very useful for a review if you had already taken A&P course but it’s been while.There are also tools that come with the book to help with studying such as LearnSmart or Connect that are very good for practice. They include quizzes, crossword puzzles, animation videos etc. However access to those can be a bit expensive depending on which membership you choose. The price range is between $50-100 (That’s in addition to the cost of the book).You can also purchase SmartLearn or Connect separately by itself which comes with the electronic version of the book too.

This is a great anatomy book that I bought to use for a required anatomy and physiology class for nursing school. It is very informative and I received an A in the class I took so it must've helped. I'm still continuing on with my nursing education and I've used this book for other classes and for clinical homework. The only thing I didn't like about this particular edition I bought is that it wasn't bound - looseleaf with three hole punch so I had to put it into a binder for safe keeping. Im wishing I would've gotten the hard bound book, they're a little more expensive but well worth it if you plan on using this book for awhile. Some of the pages have ripped.

There was a little wear on the book and some of the pages were creased, wrinkled, and a few pages were slightly torn at the bottom, but it does not effect the ability to read the material in the book in anyway. Over all I'm satisfied with this product and would purchase from this seller again.

I have found this text book to be very informative. The information is easy to read and comprehend and is aided by many pictures, diagrams and tables. Every chapter is well organized and broken down into sub-sections. The end of each chapter has a well thought out chapter summary that makes for a great review of the material. The drawings are detailed and nicely labeled and it also provides real life cadaver photos so it's not just full of the cartoon-ish diagrams. Also, the publisher's web site has videos, flash cards, memory games, practice quizzes etc.I ordered this used from an Amazon seller and was very happy with the quick shipping, low cost and good product description.

The paperback international version is identical to the US hardback version. I was worried it wouldn't be quite the same, but it was! And it saved me a ton of money. Other students in class are envious. Never buy textbooks from the college bookstore if you can help it!

This book flows nicely. It gets straight to the point without being overly wordy. Anatomy is not the easiest subject for me, but this book does a good job of explaining the human body and it's functions very clearly and concisely. The diagrams are plentiful and clearly show all viscera, muscles and bones. These authors make use of drawings and cadavers. You really begin to understand the workings of the body systems and exact locations of all bones, muscles and cavities from posterior, anterior, lateral, and ipsilateral views....absolutely every angle and region is covered. A good amount of pathology is included within this book.

I was transported from the very start of the book, as I have been with each of her past books. Her ability to develop each of her characters made me so invested and immersed in the plot and the path of each character. I can't wait for her next story!!

Captivating, I couldn't put the book down. Another home run for Marks!

The history, the facts, and the story all pulled me right into the story of Theo. Liv is obsessed with Theodosia Burr and what happen to her. She pulls both Sam and Whit into her search for what happen to Theo. While the history is interesting and I learned so much about a person that I didn’t even know existed before I picked up The Last Treasure, I really enjoyed the dynamics between Liv, Sam, and Whit.The odd trio work meet in college and end up working together to search shipwrecks. I was interested in who Liv would end up with. Would she be better matched with Sam or Whit? Erika Marks did a great job showing how a relationship could or would be with each of the guys. I am still on the fence as to who is better with Liv but I am sure there is a true love winner in this trio.I really liked was how true Liv stayed true to herself. She grew up without a mother and with a father who was extremely demanding of her time and attention yet she was able to learn to stand up for herself, stand on her own two feet, and blaze her own trail in life. She did not let those saying she couldn’t, shouldn’t, or wouldn’t be able to dive, find out the truth, or live her own life pull her down or push her off her path.The Last Treasure is a romance, but more than that I felt it was a mystery. A mystery of what happen to Theo and what Liv’s future is. I recommend picking it up.

I am a hardcore sucker for southern fiction, and if you throw in a historical (fictional) mystery, you officially own me. Who doesn’t love a story involving the ocean and treasure hunters? I was lucky enough to win this off a fabulous author’s Facebook giveaway (thanks Kerry!) and knew between the cover and the blurb that I’d found a fantastic summer read. I had just finished a heavy, dark story at the beach and was craving something to cleanse the palate and make me want to get out of bed again; this was perfect! The romance thing is growing on me (although you’ll never see me pick up one of those books with a cowboy and pregnant bride on the cover), and I thoroughly enjoyed this little love triangle (another thing I typically despise).The book almost has a feel of being split into two plots; on one hand we have Liv and her modern day life, and on the other we have the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Theodosia Burr (pet name Theo) and the trio’s obsession to find out the truth regarding such. This really worked well as it kept me in suspense for nearly the entire book. We would flip back and forth between present day and past, trying to piece together why Liv and Sam broke up and what drew her and Whit together, and along the way had pieces of Theo’s story thrown in as well. One of my favorite chapters was the one including Theo’s found diary and the journal entries. I’m one of the millions of people obsessed with all things Hamilton at the moment, and this book includes a fictionalized account of Aaron Burr’s duel with Alexander Hamilton and what happened to his family following such trauma.The characters were well developed; I would go as far as saying this book could well be categorized as a character study with a side of historical fiction. I really enjoyed getting to know Liv and was Team Whit all the way. Even from the beginning, he could basically do no wrong in my eyes. I found myself torn on my feelings for Sam, but I won’t go into that as you should read and decide for yourself. My heart truly broke for the relationship between Liv and her father, and I thought that aspect was a nice touch to the story. I grew attached to these characters and was sad to see them go once the story was over; I still am thinking of them from time to time 4 days after finishing the novel. Erika Mark’s writing reminds me of a female Nicholas Sparks; she clearly knows the south well and writes about her surroundings with ease. The whole book just flowed exceptionally well and drew me in, so much so that I immediately checked my library upon finishing for more of her books! Highly recommended to lovers of southern fiction/women’s fiction/historical fiction mixed with romance (not the graphic or cheesy kind)! Truly adored this book and can’t wait to read more from Ms. Marks!
