The Science of Mom: A Research-Based Guide to Your Baby's First Year, by Alice Green Callahan

Review

"Finally, someone has brought some science―and some sense―to the mommy wars. Should be required reading for all new (and old) parents." (Emily Oster, Brown University, author of Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong―And What You Really Need to Know)"Alice Callahan has written a breakthrough book, combining the compassion, warmth, and angst of a mother with the measured reasoning of a scientist. She helps parents not only understand how science works, but how they can access that science to answer their questions. She's found a way to access the scientist in all of us." (Paul A. Offit, MD, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia)"Yes! An easy-to-read, fascinating, nuanced review of the science behind new parents' biggest health questions. Many of these issues―infant sleep, breastfeeding, vaccines―have or will hit your 'Should I panic?' button. With gentle guidance, Alice Callahan puts your fears to rest." (Tracy Cutchlow, author of Zero to Five: 70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science (and What I've Learned So Far))"Too many of today's parents treat science as a weapon, using it to justify some choices and condemn others. Yet, most don't fully understand what science can and cannot tell us. By giving parents a comprehensive understanding of how science relates to parenting, Alice Callahan has helped us turn this weapon into a tool for peace. Callahan untangles basic scientific concepts, reveals the realities and limitations of research, and advocates for a measured approach to parenting science that eschews absolutes and acknowledges nuance. The Science of Mom is a rare gem in the parenting canon―smart, sensitive, and a lifesaver for a generation of parents caught in the nebulous spider's web of Internet 'wisdom.'" (Suzanne Barston, author of Bottled Up: How the Way We Feed Babies Has Come to Define Motherhood, and Why It Shouldn't)"Families routinely search for health information. The Science of Mom makes it easy collecting evidence for health decisions and putting it into perspective with a mom-to-mom connection. Callahan's advice is thoughtful, backed by science and feels fueled of love. She is willing to provide powerful advice when detailing the science and safety of vaccines. Keep this book in arm's reach as you support your infant for calm and direction." (Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP, Seattle Children's Hospital, author of Mama Doc Medicine: Finding Calm and Confidence in Parenting, Child Health, and Work-Life Balance)"Fascinating! Think of all the controversial, hot-button topics that parents obsess about in a child’s first year―from vaccines and feeding, bed-sharing to sleep training. Weighing the scientific evidence, Callahan offers balanced insights and in-depth answers―a far cry from the oversimplified advice prescribed by many 'parenting experts.' The result: a must-have guide that’s substantive and extremely engaging." (Jena Pincott, author of Do Chocolate Lovers Have Sweeter Babies? The Surprising Science of Pregnancy)"Dr. Callahan isn’t bossy, and isn’t out to tell you what she thinks. Her book tells you what the science says, and explains how we know what we know, and what things we still need to learn more about. There’s humility and warmth, here, which I think parents of newborns will find reassuring." (The Pediatric Insider)"[Callahan] takes a compassionate, non-preachy approach with a goal of not telling the reader what to do but rather how to seek wise advice and make smart decisionsand to enjoy having a baby, which is what it is all about..." (Live Science)"This is science-based medicine writing at its best. Callahan doesn’t cherry-pick. She knows how to evaluate the entire body of research and put it into perspective along with practical parenting considerations. She enhances her message with a personal touch, including anecdotes about her own experiences as a new mother and about the experiences of her friends and family. If I had three thumbs, I would give this book a 3-thumbs-up recommendation." (Harriet Hall, MD Science-Based Medicine)"... in Science of Mom, Alice Callahan, PhD combines the critical eye of a scientist with the heart of a mother to create a helpful resource for all people interested in evidence based infant care and parenting." (Science & Sensibility (Lamaze International))

“Studies show that breastfeeding for at least three months leads to-”“Show me the science.”In her new book Science of Mom, inspired by her blog of the same title, Alice Green Callahan gives us an expert look at a variety of common parenting questions – the ones we all get a little tense about, like breastfeeding, infant sleep, and vaccinations. Callahan has a PhD in nutrition, and is well-versed in the ways of research. In each chapter of her book, Callahan provides an in-depth, nuanced exploration of the topic at hand. She tells us what research is out there, who did the research, how they did it, and precisely what they found. What she doesn’t do is offer polished, packaged takeaways. If you want to know what the research says about breastfeeding vs. formula, for example, be prepared to read through a detailed discussion: the history of breastmilk substitutes, an explanation of the nutritional makeup of modern formula, and the numerous research challenges of how to compare breastfeeding and bottle-feeding. Only then does Callahan explain both what the scientific community can tell us about the differences, and what it can’t.(Here and elsewhere throughout this review, I was tempted to give you a juicy quotation from the book. Ultimately, I decided it would be an injustice to Callahan for me to do so! The whole point is that a sentence or two just can’t give you the information you need. Reading the whole book is worth it.)I had a personal interest in reading Callahan’s book, because I’ve followed her blog for several years. What she wrote on her blog about infant sleep was a huge help to me as we overcame sleep difficulties with my oldest child, and I was pleased to see she had even more to say about it in the book. Other topics were newer to me, and some of the information has actually caused me to consider changes in the way I parent. Having read Science of Mom, I’m now planning to talk to my OB about delayed cord clamping; and Callahan’s explanation of children’s nutritional needs is making me reconsider our mostly-vegetarian diet, at least for the kids.Callahan is disciplined about only giving recommendations when the science is absolutely clear. She takes pains to show how much flexibility and variation there can be in parenting issues; rather than dictating exactly how to parent effectively, what science can do is disabuse us of the notion that there’s only one right way. Callahan tells us what the research says, and leaves us to make our own decisions. When the scientific consensus really is clear, she explains why, as thoroughly as possible. One area she discusses where the research is clear is vaccines. The short answer: they’re safe. But Callahan doesn’t stop there. She includes five different appendices addressing common concerns about vaccines, introducing us to terms such as “antigen load” to clarify what questions we really ought to be asking. I was blown away by the breadth and depth of this particular discussion.I also deeply appreciated Callahan’s take on attachment parenting. She takes a look at various practices popular among attachment parents, such as bedsharing and long-term breastfeeding, and while she doesn’t condemn them, she often finds the scientific support for these practices to be less than robust. But it’s clear that in her heart, she desires “attachment” with her children as much as the next mom. For Callahan, the keyword that the research points to is responsiveness. In breastfeeding, in helping a baby sleep, in feeding a toddler, Callahan details how an attentive response to a baby’s behavior has been shown to be an effective and relationship-bolstering strategy. I found her theme of responsiveness to be a fresh and enlightening approach. Finally, in addition to the abundance of research she presents to us, Callahan empowers us to analyze further information ourselves; her first chapter includes a “crash course” in research methodology and explains the differences between systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies. She points to some trustworthy sources that we can look to the next time we see a headline proclaiming “Scientists Discover That Breastfeeding Does X Y and Z.”I’d highly recommend this book to any mom expecting her first child … or her fourth. I’m still thinking through a lot of what I read in the book, and I plan to re-read parts of it before the new baby comes along. Callahan’s position, outside the “attachment” camp, outside the “Babywise” camp, is truly new ground, and I would encourage moms from any camp to give it a look.

Have you ever hopped online during naptime to quickly look something up? Forty-five minutes later, baby's waking up, and you feel more confused than ever after reading five different conflicting opinions? It drives me crazy. The Science of Mom takes away the crazy and gives you what you need: balanced, evidence-based recommendations. I first found the blog when I was trying to figure out when to introduce solids. I was so impressed, I ended up buying the book. The book compliments the website, and also provides a great deal of more depth and information. In fact, I loved the book so much, that I'm buying it for friends and family members when they're expecting.I love the balance of solid empiricism with gentle compassion. Here's a taste for how she handles the sometimes charged issue of sleep training:"Whatever you do, do it mindfully, lovingly, and respectfully. And then, please, don’t feel guilty about your choice. If you feel judged by others, remember that they don’t live in your house at night, and they don’t care for your child. You do, and you are capable of doing the right thing for your child."If you're deciding between this book and "The Informed Parent: A Science-Based Resource for Your Child's First Four Years" I'd stick with this one. Science of Mom covers fewer topics, but provides much greater depth.

Over the past three years I've read pretty much every popular parenting book on the market, and I just finished this one (albeit a little late given that my son just turned one) and I am SO BUMMED that it wasn't available last year because it would have saved me SO MANY hours of googling trying to find unbiased, evidence-based parenting advice, as well as relieved a lot of anxiety/guilt about our choices as parents, and likely saved us from making a few well-intentioned mistakes (hello, iron deficiency!).This book is balanced, non-judgmental, compassionate, and incredibly informative (I honestly am in shock at how much I learned b/c I thought I'd read it all by now!). It's not exhaustive but it covers all the big questions that there's a lot of conflicting (read: not always reliable) advice floating around about on the internet (breastfeeding vs. formula, where baby should sleep, when/how to start solids and what foods to feed, vaccines, etc.), and it covers them all with a fair, honest, and fact-based approach that I really, really appreciated. In short, if you read only one parenting book, this should be it! And if, like me, you read them all, you will really appreciate how ridiculously well-researched and fact-focused this book is. I really can't recommend it enough!

I got this for my four-year old daughter. Even though she's on the young side for this book's readership, she actually really enjoys it. I embellish the narrative a little by making it not only about the buildings but also about what might happen in the spaces, who might live there, and what the architects might have been like. Because the illustrations are so playful and engaging, it is easy to do this. Highly recommended if you want to nurture a little architecture buff!

A nice book for children and adults who like the design elements of modern houses.

great for kids of all ages.

Love the graphics

Great book, somewhat elementary, but very interesting.

Perfect!

this book is so great to have around even for quite young children. we read it with my freshly turned 3 year old and it engages him and he finds it interesting. He may not pick it up everyday or choose it for his bedtime reading but in our household we like to have books on variety of topics and this one is definitely a keeper. I love that everything in this book is illustrated, no photos. Even little portraits of the architects!

#27,465 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

If you like Howl's Moving Castle then you will like this book. However, you provably won't like it as much as the first book. Nor will you provably like it as much as the second book. It's a well thought out piece, but it is lacking something critical: It spends WAY too much time away from Sophie and Howl! The last two books are told from different characters experience. Their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives take center stage. Which is fine except for the fact that they are not nearly as interesting as Sophie and Howl! You still get to see your favorite characters but they are not driving the plot as much as they should be. I want to see more of Sophie and Howl. Sadly, that looks like that will never happen . . .

Ok. I don't normally review books, but I'm reading this to my children, and if it were up to me I wouldn't bother to finish. We are about halfway finished and nothing has really happened besides two teenagers looking after a magical house and getting into very boring mishaps (i.e - water pipes leaking and needing spells to get rid of it, meeting a dangerous monster and miraculously getting away by mistake, the dog gets big and eats too much for like an hour or two, some kinds of gremlins that work in the garden and wanting additional pay, etc.) The main character got to work at a library for a day and met the main characters Howl and Sophie, very briefly and had tea. That's seriously all the action so far. My kids aren't really that interested as opposed to the first two books, and I'm having trouble keeping focused as well. If it were up to me there'd be much more action, and maybe some sort of spark or rivalry between Peter and Charmain... something. Instead, it feels like I'm watching two young teenagers bicker indifferently at each-other out of minor inconvenience and that's all this story has to offer.I'll keep on a few more chapters until the kids complain, but it's just awful.

Charmain Baker has been brought up perfectly respectably, without a hint of magic in her life. It's much to her surprise, then, when she is left in charge of her great-uncle William's house--since he is the Royal Wizard Norland and his house is as magical as he. She and Norland's new apprentice Peter become embroiled in a Royal mystery, make new friends, and see the end of old enemies.Jones is a fantastic writer, and this is a solidly written fantasy. The characters are well drawn, and the plot well written. It is humorous and entertaining, and while not perfect, a fun read, well recommended.Note: While it seems like a stand-alone novel at first, this is actually the third in the Wizard Howl series. Readers without the knowledge of the other two books will find themselves lost in certain situations.

To start off her main character is extremely whiny, it made me want to slap her. Also I'm not in love with twinkle I hated him because reading the baby talk irrated me. I'm thinking it was supposed to be cute but to me it became frustrating to read.I hated the way this one ended she needed to add a few more chapters to explain and give it more of a well though out ending. Not oh Charmaine is now a wizard and Peter is the next king the end no. She needed something more than that abrupt ending. But it's her style she did it with Howl's moving Castle as well and I did not enjoy it.Would I recommend this no, no I wouldn't. It was frustrating to read and quick to end without a good build up. It just ended.

The 3rd and final book in the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy is much better than the 2nd book (Castle in the Air), but still did not quite reach the greatness of the original. The new characters Charmain and Peter are good, but in the end, they seem like window dressing compared to the old standbys Howl, Sophie, and Calcifer (who you are probably reading the book for anyway). The plot of this book is certainly the most complex, but the antagonists, a group of purple creatures called Lobbucks, seem lackluster and kind of wimpy when compared to past villains of the series (Witch of the Waste and a Genie), but I think one of the on-going themes of Jones' books are the bad guys are mostly a lot of talk and rumors, and when confronted, they are not nearly as clever or powerful as you think. All in all, it was a good trilogy, but I think most people will be content just reading the first book and leaving it at that. Never-the-less, if You loved Howl's Moving Castle, and can't live life without a little more Howl and Sophie, then this is a pretty good book to read.

For a long time I preferred hard science fiction to fantasy. Dianne Wynne Jones managed to change my view of fantasy. This story is a follow on to Howl's Moving Castle. I shan't give you a synopsis of the work because I think that if you will buy this book and read it, you will understand. I will say this about it, it is a story about two teenagers growing each other up. The girl knows nothing about keeping house, but the boy knows a little and--well--I won't spoil the surprise for you. Just buy it and read it.

There's a good chance you stumbled upon this review because you recently saw (or plan to see) the film, "Avengers: Infinity War," and you'd like to know how things play out in the source material. First of all, if you enjoy comics, particularly the Marvel universe, then I definitely recommend picking up this paperback. While many big events get overhyped and turn out to be disappointing, Infinity Gauntlet actually left many fans very satisfied. There's a lot of story buildup, not tons of fighting, but we enjoy seeing so many characters coming together to defeat Thanos, a villain who is seemingly invincible. This book collects all 6 issues, which only seemed to have a minor contribution to the events that play out in the movie. Some of the major characters in here - Silver Surfer, Warlock, Mistress Death - don't even appear in the film. Same goes for Wolverine, She-Hulk, and Doctor Doom. However, the general premise is there, and it's possible they used other material as a source like Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, or Infinity Watch. I wouldn't know, admittedly I haven't read them because I was always told Infinity Gauntlet is the best. There's not a lot I can say about this series without spoiling the plot, so I'll just tell you that it's well written by Jim Starlin, and beautifully illustrated by George Perez and Ron Lim, who are all highly respected in the comic industry. Pick this up today and enjoy an epic story about some of the biggest characters in sci-fi/pop culture.

Jim Starlin is one of the best writers Marvel has ever employed, in my opinion. With this definitive take on Thanos, Starlin shows why he was the go-to guy for anything cosmic for Marvel, especially in the 80's and early 90's. Taking what could have been a distinctly goofy and over-the-top plot (Thanos used the combine might of the Infinity Gems to wipe out half of all life in the Universe) and made it not only a fantastic read, but nearly Shakespearean in nature thanks to the backstory Starlin provides for Thanos and his attempts to prove his love for Mistress Death. Overall a masterful piece of writing and one of the all time definitive Marvel titles. This is why Thanos was chosen to be the big bad of the MCU.

One of the best storytelling and plots in Marvel history. Many heroes go against Thanos who holds the Infinity Gauntlet with all the infinity gems. It shows how he attains each gem, and is just a great story overall. There is a newer story called Thanos Rising which I need to read before going to see Avengers Infinity War in theaters.

This volume collects Infinity Gauntlet #1-6 which is a pretty complete story on it's own. Now, Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos does include the events that lead up to the Inifity Gauntlet, but flashbacks and other exposition cover the vital information from that collection as well as the backstories of most of the major players. The story is basically this. A villian by the name of Thanos has aquired the Infinity Gauntlet which is powered by the Infinity Gems giving ultimate power essentially making him God. He is in love with the female personification of Death and as his gift to her he kills half of the sentient life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. On Earth, heros unite with cosmic gaurdians in a last futile stand against a mad god at the end of the Universe. This story has everyone. Adam Warlock, Thanos, Silver Sufer, Galactus, The Watcher, Wolverine, the Hulk, the Avengers, the X-Men, Dr. Strange, Quasar, Dr. Doom, Mephisto, and many more.Pretty much anyone who was anyone back in 1991 is in this. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the story is beyond epic. Space, time, and reality are bent, broken, and destroyed in a cosmic struggle to stop Thanos. I can't recommend this enough. Sequels to this story include Infinity War (Marvel Comics),Infinity Crusade - Volume 1 (v. 1), and Infinity Crusade - Volume 2 (v. 2). All of which I've read and recommend.

READ THIS BOOK!Jim Starlin proved himself to be one of the most innovative and complex comic book writers ever. The depth of his characters in Marvel's 1991 comic book:The Infinity Gauntlet is daunting to imagine. Starlin balances dozens of Marvel's greatest heroes beautifully. Each character is given something interesting to do and they all play their part. The narrative is so very intricate as Starlin combines the thrill of these heroes gathering while simultaneously exploring what it means to be a hero. The Infinity Gauntlet is lauded as one of the greatest and most important comic books ever written. As someone who just read if for the first time, I wholeheartedly agree.Adam Warlock is essentially the central character who joins forces with all of Earth's mightiest superheroes to defeat the mad titan Thanos. I will not spoil any of the story, but merely state that I was stunned by the complexity of the storytelling techniques Starlin used to write this book. He constantly switches narrators and perspectives to give the reader every side of the story. It's all so effortless. The artwork is likewise magnificent as George Pérez illustrates all these wonderful depictions of the heroes, worlds, and powers. The colors are so vivid and everything just pops. It's easy to see how audiences everywhere fell in love with this book. Massive in scope, yet the story and characters are so empathetic, The Infinity Gauntlet may very well be the best comic book Marvel ever released.

I read the originals as a kid, in 6 different issues. I saw this and bought it for my son. It's all 6 issues of the original Infinity Gauntlet in 1 book. This is the best comic book series ever written. Regardless of what your into as far as comics go, you'll love this. If you haven't read it, it's a must buy.

I enjoyed this book. It was cool to see all the comic characters that I am not familiar with. I am not an avid comic book reader so this gave me good insight into who Thanos is and what drives him. Cool cast of comic heroes too. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see amazing characters.

This is a great book for a 3-year-old child. I'm raising my daughter to be bilingual and I read stories in Spanish every evening. This is one of my daughter's favorite books! She loves this story and the large colorful images. I like the size of the book and the length of the copy per page -- great for a toddler!

Great translations and easy to read. I got these for my 5 year old to help him practice his English and Spanish reading. The stories are easy and fun and the pictures are great.

I have a great niece who has Latin American family on the mother's side and English-Aussie family on our side. She's going to grow up immersed in both languages and cultures so these books are great for her development.I speak English and Spanish so read the book myself to check its translation and it is pretty spot on.Nicely illustrated with short descriptions to keep it simple. Well worth the money. I also bought The Milk Maid and The Ugly Duckling. Please note, although the book is $3.00ish USD postage to Australia will push each book to $10.00AUD. Having said that, it is still more expensive to buy these books in Australia.

Do not buy! These books do not follow the original stories and read incomplete. Almost as if there are pages missing! There are other options out there that are much better.

Cute modern adaption of little red riding hood. Flimsy book but daughter loves to read it.

SPOILER ALERT.The illustrations in this book are great. The narrative is a little concise. And the story stops after the wolf says "the better to eat you with."

Low quality, but at least the Spanish part is well written.

Enjoyed this immensely. For someone like me who is interested in learning Spanish, this is THE BOOK!

This book is chock full of detailed information on the treatment of Adult Acne. I was impressed with the extent of the research that went into this book. The author left nothing to chance, she covers all possible scenarios that could occur with adult acne, even a bit of anatomy was covered in the structure and layers of the skin. This is a great book in and of itself, but what I liked most was that several alternatives were given, from your typical drugs to natural remedies. Even the foods to include in your diet in the fight against adult acne were discussed. Highly recommend!

Loved the information in this book. I've been suffering from acne for most of my youth and adult life. I can't wait to try her methods!

Really like this straight forward book and all the research the author did. Very informative and I'm trying some new solutions I found in the book. I realize I'm not the only adult who suffers with acne

This is an incredibly comprehensive overview of how to deal with adult acne which, make no mistake, is often different than the acne one experiences as a teenager. Yes, they can both be driven by hormones and hormonal fluctuations, but there are differences, and that means you need to treat them differently. This book covers pretty much every facet of cause (hormones, stress, etc.) and treatment, including internal (diet, medications that you take) and external (how you treat your skin, topical treatments, etc.).I was especially pleased by the author's treatment of diet, because there are so many ways that diet plays a role in how our skin looks and feels, and that includes how it impacts acne.Even though I consider myself very well-versed and well-educated when it comes to diet, and also dealing with adult acne, I still found not only reminders, but things mentioned in the book that would never even have crossed my mind in my everyday life. For example, having found myself single following a period when I wasn't, I was not changing my pillow cases as often as I otherwise would. When I was looking at my face and wondering why most of my (admittedly minor, but still a big deal to me) acne was all on just one side of my face, it suddenly hit me: that's the side of my face that is in contact with my pillow for 6 or more hours a night! I ran out and bought a few more pillow cases, and have started changing them more frequently, and whaddaya know! My acne on that side is clearing up! Doh!I also want to mention this homeopathic anti-acne product that I have been using (no harsh medications for me, thank you, although she does cover them in the book, and they can be useful for people): Natrabio Acne Relief TabletsI will say that I found a couple of typos/omitted words in the ebook, however I am not deducting any stars for them (even though I ordinarily would) for two reasons: 1. The book is so darned thorough, and readable, and 2. The author kindly sent me the book as a PDF so that I could easily read and review it, and I know that sometimes when translating a text to PDF things can happen. So, I feel that mentioning it here is sufficient. :-)In full disclosure, Kyla sent me this to review, however I am not bashful about giving my true opinion of a product (hey, I'm a lawyer, just try to *stop* me from giving my opinion! :~) )

This book is the real deal. If you have serious acne and you're wondering what to do, this is the place to start. My teenage son has severe cystic acne and I have spent hours upon hours researching every possible treatment plan from prescription medications to home remedies and even old wives tales. If you're on that same path, desperately searching for answers, this book is a great place to start. Kyla has compiled all the relevant research available based on her own personal experience battling acne and the scars it leaves behind - physically and emotionally - and put it all together into a compact, easy-to-read format that will make you a near expert overnight. What she has in this book is based on real science, including her own interviews with the best acne experts she could find. Read the book before you talk with your own doctor and you'll be able to have the kind of serious, informed, life-altering discussions you need to have rather than just trying one thing after another with no success. This book deserves more than two thumbs up - it's a guide book that shows you the way out of the severe cystic acne tunnel.

This is an excellent resource for dealing with adult acne. It is obvious the author has done her research on the hormonal, bacterial, stress and dietary causes of acne that affect adults. She has also provided a range of treatment options from diet changes (including recipes in the back!), OTC treatments, product ingredients to avoid and dermatological options. My only piece of advice (and it's a bit of a picky one) is to have a works cited page. There is an extensive list of resources, but it would be nice to have footnotes when a specific work is cited (especially if a direct quote is being used). Excellent work!*A free e-book was provided in exchange for my honest review

This is a sensibly written, clearly helpful book about the causes and possible treatments of acne that occurs in adulthood, written by fellow-sufferer Kyla Stone.Although not common knowledge (unless you are a sufferer yourself), acne can occur in post-teen years, whether or not one has suffered from it before and even if you have a 'normal' healthy lifestyle. But don't despair - help is at hand! The contents of this book may very well save your sanity and your social life without spending a small fortune on lotions and potions that simply won't work. Simple and clearly laid out chapters make it easy to understand. With their sensible down to earth approach and designated chapter headings the properly researched information enclosed really makes a difference and reassures the reader that treatment of medical/physiological conditions by medical professionals, can link with your own self-help actions and lifestyle adjustments to bring about a happy conclusion.Read your copy today and spread the glad tidings that help is at hand.Thank you so much Ms Stone!

His most recent novel, Beautiful Ruins, was named the best book of 2012 by Esquire and NPR’s Fresh Air. JW: Let’s start with the title, Godforsaken Idaho. You grew up in Southern Idaho. How much does the setting play a part in these stories, and in you as a writer? SV: Idaho is so deeply a part of me that I probably don’t even recognize the ways it emerges in my writing. I never set out to write about the state in any direct way--but on some level, I am probably always writing about Idaho, or my childhood and family and everything else that is tied up in Idaho for me. It’s a place I love and a place that drives me crazy and, most of all, a place that I know. JW: “The First Several Hundred Years Following My Death” is such a funny, original, matter-of-fact depiction of the banality of afterlife. How did that story come about? SV: I wrote the first lines with no idea of what might lie behind them: “The food is excellent. The lines are never long. There’s nothing to do with your hands. These are the first things I told my son. Then we don’t talk again for something like 200 years.” I think the voice and the story’s conceit were built into those lines, and I spent a lot of time extracting the story from them. JW: “About as Fast as This Car Will Go” has flashes of autobiography. What do you do when you a story approaches the details of your own life? SV: I usually recognize it only after the fact, strange as that may seem given how obvious some of the connections are. I never set out to write about my life, even indirectly. But I always find, through the roundabout operation of the imagination, that I’ve returned to the same few preoccupations: absent fathers, criminal fathers, regretful fathers--they’re everywhere in my fiction. Not much mystery there: My own father went to jail, and then prison, when I was a boy. Yet nothing that happens in “About as Fast” happened to me. My father committed different crimes, and my family situation is much, much different, and I--crucially, I’d like to think--did not follow him into a life of crime. So far. JW: These stories often deal with the mythology and hypocrisy of religion, even its mystery. How did your lapsed Mormon faith figure in these stories? SV: More in the lapse than the faith, probably. Like a lot of people who have left a religion, probably, I was focused for a long time on the hypocrisy of the faithful and the failures of religion. But that is such a standard, clichéd pose--as if only the faithful are hypocritical or ignorant or deluded or weak. I wanted to write about doubters, denouncers, heretics. Though I have left the church, Mormonism is my heritage, and using the materials of Mormonism’s stories to write new ones--even stories that might seem heretical to some--became a way of keeping possession of this heritage.

"[A] slam-dunk debut." —O Magazine"Not only is each story brilliantly constructed, but the collection as a whole is an architectural masterpiece…They’re written smartly…there’s utter brilliance…It’s terrific fiction. Vestal seems to be a writer we can trust to wake us up gorgeously to a certain angry reason, a certain subversive truth." —Association for Mormon Letters"[A] darkly provocative story collection. Throughout these well-crafted stories, Vestal’s prose captures the gritty poignancy of western life." —Seattle Times"From lustful country boys who plot against the tiny dogs carried around by beautiful out-of-town women (lapdogs, the narrator explains, are "wrong" because they make "us feel defensive about our whole lives") to two Mormons out to bring a sinner back into the fold, Vestal cracks open the dry, dusty ground and lets the weirdness spill out. It's savage and apocalyptic and endlessly funny." —The Stranger"Vestal's anti-heroes may be rascals and lost causes, but they have a canny insight, humor and wisdom that I found irresistible." —The Oregonian"I cracked open the collection by Shawn Vestal and found a short story called ‘Winter Elders,’ which grabbed me from the opening line: “They materialized with the first snow.”…This is a tale of missionary work from the perspective of the target. And it is a dark tale. It’s also psychologically astute and elegantly written, like much of Vestal’s book.” —David Haglund, Slate "[Godforsaken Idaho] lies somewhere between the classically chiseled narratives of Richard Ford’s Rock Springs, the satiristic imagination of George Saunders, and the comic stylings of The Book of Mormon. Vestal’s dark, often very funny, and deeply probing stories have one foot in God-fearing Mormon country and another in godforsaken characters-at-the-end-of-their-rope realism." —Rebecca Bengal, Vogue "These are smart, ambitious stories that bravely barrel into unwinnable arguments…Thoughtful and cleverly crafted." —Billings Gazette "Diviner, the closing tale, is as hair-raising a depiction of Mormon founder Joseph Smith as there is." —Charleston Post and Courier "Brilliant in its world-building." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "Full of believable and complex characters." —NY1"A provocative and revelatory debut." —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review "Godforsaken Idaho is weirdly and wildly funny, a blistering set from a writer with a far-reaching range." —LA Review of Books "Shutter your windows—Godforsaken Idaho is an awesome storm of history, grit, and revelatory imagination. These stories take huge risks and simply do not falter. Shawn Vestal has set out to reimagine the American West, and he’s done so with the soulful, single-minded purpose of a half-mad pioneer." —Patrick Somerville, author of This Bright River and The Cradle "Shawn Vestal’s Godforsaken Idaho is a wickedly funny, surprisingly profound collection. These nine stories of prophets and parents, of doppelgangers and pocket dogs, form a thrilling introduction to one of the wryest, most inventive new voices in fiction." —Jess Walter, author of Beautiful Ruins "Godforsaken Idaho mixes the hardpan realism of Richard Ford's Rock Springs with the dreadful wonder of Dan Chaon's best stories. In the lyrical beauty of his sentences, in the brutal choices his characters must make, and in the heartbreaking landscape itself, Shawn Vestal finds startling moments of grace and unexpected redemption." —Kim Barnes, author of In the Kingdom of Men "Shawn Vestal's short story collection Godforsaken Idaho is violent, full of dreamy ache. Whether it is celestial beings, father-son criminal duos, or murderous missionaries, Vestal draws vulnerable, beautifully bruised yet resilient characters." —Interview "Provocative, gritty, and highly imaginative, the stories in Shawn Vestal's Godforsaken Idaho form an impressive debut collection." —Largehearted Boy "The stories in Godforsaken Idaho are sprightful and imaginative, quirky, at times odd, employing a modern register that places them firmly within the canon of contemporary American literary fiction." —Bloom

"Gulls" and "Diviner" are the standouts in this collection. As in all collections, there are a few stories that are excellent, a few that fall flat, and many more that span the range.Unfortunately, "Gulls" and "Diviner" are the last stories in this volume, following up several surprisingly bleak stories. The weak links here are "Godforsaken Idaho," "Pocket Dog," and "About as Fast as This Car Will Go," which unfortunately form a block in the beginning of the volume that considerably dampened my enthusiasm after "The First Several Hundred Years Following My Death," which has some traces of very dark religious humor. Based on the descriptions, I'd expected these stories to be amusing. Some are, but most are bleak. There's a sense of haunted futility hanging around some of these characters that stuck with me after I'd finished the stories.

I'm not a heavy reader in the past year or so I decided to re read some authors I read as a young man, I read Huxley, Orwell (you gotta read Down and out in Paris and London), Steinbeck, Jack London these were all very good. I then read Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn because I wanted to try something more contemporary and am glad I did, then I looked for something real contemporary I'm fairly poor so I looked for a cheap kindle offering. I saw Godforsaken Idaho was highly rated so I tried it, it kept my attention from the beginning. Much of the story takes place in the afterlife which was something of a monotonous institutional place where people entertain themselves by reliving the favorite parts of their lives over and over. The most interesting parts of the book are (I think ) directly from the authors life they describe the life of a boy who goes to live with his recently paroled father. Dad was having trouble getting work and after a while starts to disappear for a few days at a time(he's burglarizing homes), after a while dad decides to show his son the ropes and brings him along. The boy loves the excitement of it(reminds me of my youth)..

Shawn Vestal writes beautifully. Each story in this book grabbed my attention until read. The first book gives the reader a new twist on a timeless subject. In the next collection, the Idaho towns mentioned were those of my LDS ancestors and now cousins, the ancestors founders and pillars in the LDS church history, their bones buried near places he includes. Not an LDS person myself, I read the book with a different approach, more curious and actually entertained, than perhaps my LDS cousins would. I agree with one reviewer when he stated it would be good to know your LDS history to see Mr. Vestal's approach. Each story is quite different from the other, although on a similar thread. In fact, a couple of them are quite unsettling in a King-style way. A good, thought-provoking read.

I actually liked this book, and he does write interesting stories. But I came away from reading this with the distinct impression that he doesn't know how to write an ending. Also, I felt his stories were all unnecessarily depressing. His writing style and vivid characterizations made up for the other shortcomings enough to merit the four stars.I come from much the same background as the author, which is why I bought this book. I am from Idaho, and I grew up Mormon. I was thrilled to read that he must of had the same landlord I had in Coeur d'Alene, with the witches living across the street. These are really engaging stories! I can see in my mind the people and places in his stories, and he writes them about as real as possible. So I would recommend this book, while knowing that it won't suit everyone's tastes.

This collection of short stories are a debut effort by the author, who apparently is a disgruntled ex-Mormon. The writing is well done, although many of the situations and characters are similar across the various stories. The author pokes a lot of (not always gentle) fun at some of the more peculiar behaviors of individuals who belong to the Mormon subculture, but, unfortunately, one must almost already be conversant with that subculture in order to understand all the jibes. Without going into a spoiler, the last three stories at the end of book are based more on history than humor, and these three are the strongest group of stories in the book. If you enjoy the short story genre and are a Mormon, an ex-Mormon, or a person with a friend who can explain the Mormon culture and history, then you should really enjoy this book!

The characters in these stories are almost uniformly interesting, and the stories are well plotted. Vestal has decided to avoid story-ending epiphanies, a choice I can respect, but I think there needs to be some surprise, some insight at the close of a story to make it all worthwhile. In eschewing epiphany, and not offering anything compensatory in epiphany's stead, each story ends rather flatly, and each is accordingly somewhat disappointing. In sum, these stories are generally well conceived and well crafted, but with rather poorly wrought endings. Perhaps Vestal sees a point in this approach, but I did not.

Although I was disappointed in that Bill found so many negatives about so many towns. Then again, he may be right. I don't travel much anymore and I let Bill Bryson do it for me. He made me laugh so many times. I wonder why he never settled down in Littelton, New Hampshire, since that is about the only town he gave four stars to.

I've thought a lot about this book after reading it. It opened my mind that an eternal paradise, would indeed be boring to the point of being eternal hell. I knew there was something wrong with the concept of eternal bliss. This book convinced me of it. The creator would never put us through that.It made me rethink what the future most likely will be. Not anything like we imagine.
